Platinum Blonde were a middleweight pop band who split their time equally between the hair studio and the recording studio. Especially popular in their native Canada, they released 4 CDs: Standing in the Dark (1984), Alien Shores (1985), Contact (1987) and Yeah Yeah Yeah (1990, by which time they were referred to as The Blondes). Girls went crazy for these bleach-blonde poster boys who- sonically speaking- were a watered-down version of Honeymoon Suite. They shifted hundreds of thousands of units domestically but US acceptance proved elusive. After their dismal 1990 swan song, the band parted company, with guitarist Kenny McLean pursuing a solo career. Lead singer Mark Holmes went on to form "Vertigo" in the late 90's. A career retrospective "Seven Year Itch 1982-1989" was released last year, ending a long search for those collectors looking to get such PB staples as "Standing in the Dark", "Not in Love", "Crying Over You", "Situation Critical" and "Somebody Somewhere" on the CD format. The liner notes are among the most arrogant and self-indulgent ever committed to high-gloss paper, wielding such claims as "big as the Beatles" to describe the Platinum Blonde phenomenon.
