Storing your CD collections

Have you ever considered storing the CDs without their jewel cases??? Or is that "just not done" by the serious collector?

The reason I ask is that jewel cases are space hogs and I am about to run out of space where I currently have mine stashed. I have looked into several different "systems" for storing CDs without the case, but they all fail to store the entire "guts" of a CD, ie the CD, the back insert, OBI strip, and the front insert. The real problem is the back insert. Most systems will allow the CD and front insert/booklet to be stored. The question then becomes what to do with the back insert, which I would need if I ever wanted to trade/sell. If I leave the back insert in the jewel case, I haven't really solved the problem.

My own collection has about 500 CDs. At one time I had about as many LPs.
