Best year for commercial hard rock back in the day?

I don't normally start threads like this, but I've been having a bit of a reminisce this evening so thought I'd throw it out there...I'm using the term commercial hard rock but I'm basically referring to anything released from our "realm" of music when it was popular in the 80s and early 90s.

I'm just going to throw it out there and say 1991.

Any takers? Apologies if this is far-too-worn territory.

Re: Best year - might depend where you were?

I was in my teens in 1980, living in London, and had just got majorly into hard rock. There was the explosion of the NWOBHM and suddenly in the charts there were all these great bands. I distincly remember on one episode of the UK's (then?) major music programme "Top Of The Pops" in 1980 there was nothing else but rock/metal - Def Leppard, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Motorhead. This was unprecedented for the time. From that perspective, 1980 in the UK would be hard to beat as a single year.

There was then the resurgence of hard rock in the mid-80s, largely spurred on by Bon Jovi and Europe. Suddenly almost everyone glammed up and hey presto another very successful period. From a commercial success viewpoint, twelve months between 1986-87 would quite possibly be hard to beat. And I suspect especially in the USA where the glam metal era resurged with a vengeance.

I recall some landmark years for me personally with key gigs, key festivals, key albums... there are some "best years" for me in the whole 1980-2005 period: 1980, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1990 and 2000-2001 (where I discovered Royal Hunt for the first time). I feel lucky to have seen all the bands I did and to have been exposed to so much great music at a very exciting time. There is still great music being made but the environment is very different...
