CLICK TO ENLARGE(INTERNATIONAL) -- A work place shooting, indeed any criminal shooting incident is a fairly rare event in Switzerland which has relatively little gun related crime despite having one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world. But it does happen. Police say several people have been killed and seriously injured during a shooting at a factory near the Swiss city of Lucerne. The shooting occurred at the Kronospan wood processing plant in the town of Menznau, police said in a statement. One witness to the incident said five people had been killed, according to a Swiss newspaper, the Luzerner Zeitung, a Swiss-German language daily newspaper published in Lucerne. Police did not immediately confirm that account. The shooting reportedly started in the canteen at the factory around 09:00 (08:00 GMT). The Swiss police statement said emergency services were on the scene. An English translation from the Luzerner Zeitung report said," The Swiss Rega air rescue was with (sic) three helicopters in use. They flew a total of four seriously injured in two different hospitals... still no information on the subject." The problem is that Americans take it as an insult, a slight on their country and go into kneejerk defense mode.

Yes, it happens everywhere. But not nearly with the frequency as in the US, which exponentially hold the record for firearm massacres. In fact, in 2012, massacres were at an all time high in the US, and thus the world. It's not just the two or three big ones you heard about in a high profile way.

And then there's the problem behind the problem, which is the mindset. Americans are unique in that they have a hardcore gun culture quite unlike other countries, where the value of having guns - any kind of gun, whether it's high capacity, rapid fire, made for maximizing kills the way the military would want to - is equated with freedom above all others. Because it's a misunderstood constitutional right. The mindset is infected, it's a cultural wrong turn. And this feeds the frequency, informs the laws, and influences the choices (among other things that converge here).

What Americans don't seem to understand is that no one is going to take away their guns. They can have a fucking rifle, a pistol, a shotgun. But guns mean so much more to them, to the point of unreason...why do I have to stop there? Why can't I buy a rapid fire assault rifle? Etc. Pointless. Either you get it or you don't.

I'm making a sweeping generalization, but the fact remains that you only have to deal with this cultural infection in the US. You keep talking about heads in the sand and all that, but I don't have my head in the sand. I am perfectly aware this happens everywhere and that it's a problem all around the world.

Do we (US Media) really need to dissect every single detail of the story in the media. Tell the news story and move on with it and let the investigators work out the details. We sensationalize everything here so much that that's all anyone talks about for weeks. That sensationalism spawns others that want that same kind of martyrism. There's always copycats of high-profile stories. It's been like that forever and it's no secret.

We may be a small country on the other side of the big pond, but what happened would be devastating in a country of ANY size in peace time. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

The aftermath of July 22nd is still very much an active debate in various guises in the news here and will continue to be so for many years, I imagine.

As for the events in Menznau outside of Lucerne, Switzerland, it seems that there are three dead and five severly injured, all employees of a wood industry business comprising around 100 people. Sadly, in America, such events have become common place. Yes, they ARE indeed...expected!! Hence the current discussions about arming school teachers and or having armed guards at schools. When it happens in another country we rarely hear about it or it's a quick blurb unless you are watching CNN, FOXNEWS or MSNBC. Its shocking because stuff like that hardly ever happens in Switzerland. Of course it happens elsewhere but not with the regularity as it appears in the USA.
