Anyone on here up on working law? I'm being made redundant but offered the same job at a lower pay scale. Is this legal to do in this day and age?

I'm in the US but I worked for a UK company and a couple of months ago they let half the company go (or 'redundancy' as they like to say in the UK!). That included my job in the US. These were hardware, software engineers project managers, and midlevel managers. This recession is hitting everyone quite hard.]]></description>

The firms can hire workers who are willing to work longer hours for less money.<br /><br />It's not going to change any time soon.]]></description>

The national service has a budget which doesn't really cater for the private company having directors and profit margins. When, in this case, healthcare budgets are slashed, its the contractors that get the chop or are told to re-organise. Its a convenient place to be employed when things are good, but very shaky ground when the economy falls apart.<br /><br />You could probably set a small business up with 5 of your fellow re-arranged colleagues and go back to the hospital/carehome, and hire yourselves back to them for more than you were paid before. You could undercut your old company but have fewer overheads needing to be paid.]]></description>

The NHS are closing the unit I work on this year. The govt have seen how little nurses are paid in the private sector and want a piece of that action.]]></description>

If done correctly, it is indeed legal under correct UK employment law. what line of work is it in?<br />Sorry to hear of anyone having to go through these things, creates alot of uncertainty and resentment that generally leads to a less productive workforce as an end result.]]></description>

This basically means that I am likely to be out of a job come the end of the summer.<br /><br />This is directly linked to Cameron last week urging British Companies to outsource to India (and where he was making his speech from).<br /><br />Luckily because of our contracts those affected will get more than the legal redundancy pay covered by current legislation.<br /><br />Way I'm looking at it is that although its leaving a bad taste in the mouth its a chance to start afresh after working for the same company for over 12 years.<br /><br />Andy]]></description>
