I ask because I was listening to a track via Youtube with a video, and the look of the band put me off, becuase they looked so old, which was a shame as the track was great. And it did...I liked Richard Marx, but could not get into Winger at first because of the image. Not until "Heading For A Heartbreak" came out, at least. Not Rush either--I'd associated them with the boys in my class and just wasn't a fan of their music until my husband got me to listening to them. Many years ago a band called Tesla released a video for Modern Day Cowboy, and I was really turned off by the video, thinking Jeff Keith was looking super gay. I managed to get beyond that initial image, and MR is one of my favorite albums of all time, as well as Jeff being one of my favorite singers. But initially the image had a negative affect.

Bands like Twisted Sister got much attention because of their image, but it ended up being their down fall as well. As I really like much of their music, but often embarrassed to admit it.

I mean I love to see (as an example) Ken Hensley and he's certainly no youngster - but he delivers and that what's important! Same goes for the Stones, yep seniority kicking in but they still got it

Had a discussion about this theme on a another forum and a witty youngster (I believe?) delivered this one beneath here as an example on how it is to be "uncool when Rocking" at an old age;

Today, the image that would put me off is of people who either dressed like idiots on the cover (Treat's Coup de Grace), or still have an 80's hair band look in 2013. Bands like Lordi don't appeal to me because of their look (OK the music is not very good either).

I still can appreciate Alice Cooper's and Kiss's look though. It is a trademark, and it has been there for 40 years. But they are two expceptions to the rule.

I think Bon Jovi have been very shrewd in the way they dealt with their image. I think it is one of the many reasons why they still are successful today. The change around "Keep The Faith" allowed them to escape the "hair band" tag and reinvent themselves.

Overall, music is still the most important thing. But in a day and age where there is so much choice, the image might not encourage me to check out certain bands.

Image will make me apprehensive about a band, yes, but the music is what counts in the end, so it doesn't affect my appreciation, although a bad image may put me off actually listening in the first place.
