I'm of the opinion that the good songs far outweigh the filler [for me, Journey were consistently good to great songwriters] but I do go along with the thinking that it was because of the 'bluesy soul' that was running rich through the hard rock.

What grinds my gears is that whenever Journey are mentioned you get the Perry 'Jihadist' movement gatecrashing the party.

How good was Steve Perry on his own? Well....what were the sales figures for 'Street Talk' and 'FTLOSM'?
Re: Journey : Documentary Trailer

I think Journey was a much, much, much more interesting musical outfit prior to Cain joining. They were more adventurous, and willing to explore.

Once Cain joined, they really turned into (often but not alwyas quality) bubblegum rock. I cannot think of a better example of a band that had such a high amount of unused high musicianship than Journey. They had a wonderful singer (listen to his line of "We Are The World" to hear how brilliant he could be. Not always served by the best or right material though), a superb guitar player and amazing drummer... and they ended up known for syrupy stuff like "Faithfully" or "Open Arms"....

I am not a die-hard fan. I believe that there are a lot of fillers in their catalogue, and that the really brilliant songs are few and far between. What actually saved a lot of the songs was the brilliance of Perry, Schon and Smith. They managed to bring some soul into often very bland pieces of music.

I am fully aware that Cain was the one who actually brought the commercial success to the band. However, to me, he actually sucked the soul of the band dry.

Why didn't they have hits after Perry left? Because they did not manage to find a singer who could bring soul to their music, and also a drummer who "jazzified" their sound. Once Perry left, they became more of "AOR by numbers" band. Still good songs, still very good musicianship, possibly a rockier edge, but much less soul. And I think the masses in the 70's responded to the "blackness" Perry, Schon and Smith were giving the music.

Or maybe it's just misunderstanding. While I did say that there were no hits pre or post Perry, I NEVER said that nobody else in the band had nothing to do with it.

Perry, Schon and Cain became a songwriting machine for a while. It was certainly a combination. However, if Neal had stayed in charge of the musical direction of the band, they would have continued to be a "going off at the instruments" boring, nobody but some other musicians give a darn band. When Steve Perry came in, he explained to Neal that they needed to build an AUDIENCE in order to make a great living. Herbie Herbert brought Steve in to straighten out the band and that is what Steve did.

Cain was the final piece of the magical puzzle and he also was commercially driven. Neal wrote some great commercial riffs but it seems like they had to drag him force feed him into doing it at least until he started seeing how much more successful melodic, commercial material helped his bank account! LOL After that, I think he finally figured out that 5 minute long guitar solo's is not what the masses want to hear!

Pre Perry they were playing non commercial stuff like prog/fusion/"early stoner" and post Perry the music industry was looking the other way.
Bad English had a number 1 hit, an accomplishment Journey didn't have until the modern day success of DSB.
This the commercial part of it, as for the artistic part, there are people e.g. supporting the opinion that Journey played quality stuff only in the first 3 records and then they turned into bubblegum rock. There are many extreme opinions, it is easy to find.

Especially Neal Schon is not a musician to be left out so easily and the other members have achieved things, not to mention that Cain was a huge part of the commercial success.

Perry for me is the greatest voice in rock history, he brought interesting ideas in the rock world like injecting Sam Cooke into rock and the rest is history that no one is denying of course.
