OT : Buying a car in the UK/Europe

Just wanted to know how the car buying experience is outside the USA. I am in the process and I must say it is the "dirtiest" experience one can go thru here as it is so dishonest and rigged. How is it in others countries? I know they all the lawyers go to help but I think there are more car salesman there then that.

I think a fleet car or certified used is the way to go. I mean if someone here leased a car for 3 years and had all its service then it's like getting a new car without the markup. I got a call from the owner of the dealership. I was working so I will call back today and see what he is doing

With that we had the price down. $429 a month. So he asked if I could come in on Saturday (this being last Tuesday). He still didn't hear back from the bank. Saturday comes he tells me quickly it went thru come on down. I called back and asked before I drive there do mean "it went thru" at the price we discussed. He then says "Yeah $449". Now I know its $20 but he gave me PS about my credit....which is great! I say deals off....he says....Its only $20 dollars! Believe that crap!

After mine was "killed" in October 2008, I chose not to replace it. (I couldn't afford to either, as the book price for a written off car with 125k on the clock was negligible.) I had a Toyota, and it would have gone on and on and on...just as my previous one did. What I miss most is the really great sound system I had in the car!

Now to comment on the original question, in all the years I bought cars in the UK (Mark 3 Cortina, Mark 4 Cortina, (new) Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Astra, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, another Toyota Crolla (the one that was "killed")) the only one that I ever had issues with was the new Ford Fiesta bought from a main dealership. They (and it) were both utterly awful and led to my never buying anotrher Ford again (as you can see). All experiences of buying pre-owned cars were totally fine, and I always felt I got a good deal for a good car.

Paul

They have higher mileage but have been regularly maintained and the mileage is usually motorway gained.
But cars are money pits, especially with the level of UK taxation (general and stealth) that is aimed at the motorist.

In Switzerland, I had 5 cars (1 new) and only 1 second-hand car gave me headache. I bought all the other ones from the same guy, and never had a problem.

In South Africa, I got a good second-hand car but it was a company car.

In Cyprus, I bought a second-hand car and it was really good. I gave it to a friend and he is still using it. The second-hand market in Cyprus is rather good.

In Lebanon, I would not touch second-hand car. I bought new only.

In Bahrain, the second-hand market is really good. I bought a Jaguar X type (8 years old) for a really good price (ca. EUR 6,000) and was really happy with it. There is a big turnover of expats here, so cars are generally in good condition and rather new (2-5 years). I recently bought a new VW Tiguan new. My wife also drives a VW which we bought almost new (18 months).
