<title>Re: ...Elvis Aaron Presley Day...</title><link>http://www.melodicrock.com/phorum52/read.php?1,925955,926099#msg-926099</link><description><![CDATA[ The morons or the hideous sights?<br />Never see people dressed in afro's, velvet flares with wide lapels and ruffle neck shirts when you go to see people like Al Green, The Four Tops, The Temptations, George Benson...<br />I don't see loads of people with mullets, tight jeans and open neck shirts at Michael Bolton gigs...<br />The only person in Meat Loaf fancy dress at Meat Loaf's last gig... was Meat Loaf!<br />Sure country bands feature lots of denim and checked shirts... but that's a look that's been round forever anyway, think initially it was more born out of necessity than a fashion statement.<br />The sight's at Firefest are usually the scariest... from behind you'd be forgiven for thinking &quot;oh look it's 1988 Bret Michaels!&quot; then it turns round, you dodge the beer gut, see that the hair starts at the back of the head and the face is that on 60 year old...<br />Shuddering at the very thought of it...<br />I think it must be the same mindset... if the clothes are still in 1989... so is the brain.<br />Niv]]></description>

You're putting all of your argument into the fact that you can't hear Elvis in other singers once he broke. But Elvis is more than what's heard.<br />He changed the mainstream attitude toward music generally and he opened doors for the rock and roll music that followed.<br /><br />He may not have been the first doing it, but he was the first that broke worldwide. It's always been that the true, real, musical pioneers aren't usually the catalyst. There were punk bands before The Sex Pistols....but The Pistols broke down the barriers and the flood followed.<br />Nirvana weren't the first band to play 'grunge'....but they were the band that blew the mainstream to pieces.<br /><br />Elvis, like it or not, was a musical AND cultural phenomenon. It's also difficult to appreciate now just what an impact he had back then. The world was a vastly different place. Elvis, and his followers, gave youth a voice. The tide was turning, but it was Elvis that rode the wave.......and I'm not a fan.]]></description>
