Nickelback, State Of Shock, Faber Drive, Default....

These bands all got their start by winning the annual Fox Seeds (Cfox is a radio station) battle of the bands competition in Vancouver. Over 1,500 bands enter each year, those 1,500 are paired down to 20. Those 20 play live shows over two weeks till three winners are announced. The winners play a gig and one of the bands wins the top prize of a tour and thousands of dollars in gear and studio time. I was at the final gig, and oddly enough, the band that won the top prize was the band that got the poorest reaction from the crowd (I was later told their sound fit the radio station format the most). Two bands killed it, one band had the crowd falling asleep. One of the bands that killed it, were Static In The Stars who on New Years Eve got to open for Steel Panther. They just shot their first video and it's worth checking out. It's a great Melodic Rock song!

It said "sent successfully", but isn't showing up in my "sent" folder, so I'm not sure if its gone through (or maybe MR.com is just slow for PMs, haven't sent one before, so I don't know). So yeah, tried to send a couple times, so could you let me know (either here or via another PM) whether you got it or not? Hope you didn't get the same message twice (sorry in advance if so) :-/

Don't worry about your original post making it sound like you didn't like the musical direction of Hedley, Marianas Trench, etc, I never got that sense at all, just never see any other posts saying people DO like the direction (until yours now, thanks). Which is weird, because I've seen other posts about "poppy" artists on here. So maybe its ok if they started as pop, but not as ok if they started more rock and then changed. Interesting. Anyway, thanks for the reply and PM :-)

First off, I agree 100% about Hedley's "Storms", that album is fantastic, heck I'd venture that it's almost a masterpiece for the quality of the songs. One doesn't have to like Pop rock to appreciate that album. I saw Mariana's Trench two months ago and it was a pretty big show. Much bigger than I expected, I didn't realize they had that much money to put into a show! I agree that Masterpiece Theatre and Ever After were great cd's. I hope my original post didn't make it sound like I didn't like the direction these bands were taking. If you check out my Last.fm profile, you'll see I listen to them alot!!! LOL. Especially Hedley, I just love those guys, and know the base player personally.

www.last.fm/user/kauna

Yes, Paul Laine sang Background the on Static In The Stars EP, and he's good friends with the band. In fact, Paul Laine has an active Facebook Page, you should check it out. He puts lots of cool stuff there.

Just a great album, regardless of style, right up there with "Masterpiece Theatre". So it throws me when people say its such a departure. Give it another chance, especially if you were already a Marianas Trench fan, and see if it grows. Also "Storms" by Hedley, but that's more by the numbers stylistically (just great pop songs).

Also interesting how big Hedley are. I'd agree on Faber Drive changing their sound for the worse, just soulless music and lyrics for the most part (did like a handful of songs on the last one). However, I do feel Hedley's material is still strong despite the style change. Loved their "Storms" album (hassle finding it though, I still don't think its officially been released here). Different style, and maybe it helps that I am a big pop-rock fan, but the songs were still there IMO and that's what its about for me. Now, the more recent song "Kiss You Inside Out", I was more eh about.

Marianas Trench are STILL amazing to me and one of my favourite (see? lol) bands. Different in sound to "Masterpiece Theatre" (classic album), sure, but still very much them, so I don't feel they've sold out at all. "Ever After" is also a classic to me. Just wish both bands would catch on more here in the states. I've missed my chance a couple times now, but I WILL see Marianas Trench live someday. Double bill of them and Hedley (throw in Simple Plan, too) would be my dream.

Oh, and I have checked out Static in the Stars due to them being mentioned here before (probably you or Coco). Not too bad, my fave was "We Are" (if that gives any indication of my music taste). Also wish Paul Laine would put out something new (did he work with Static in the Stars? Kinda remember something about that)...been too long and I loved the Shugaazer album plus most of his stuff with Danger Danger (wish I'd seen them live, too).

Jordan just loves to Rock, so I can't see him going too poppy. I wonder how much these bands are influenced by Canadian radio? As frustrated some fans are by the added electronics etc, these bands now dominate Canadian HOT AC/TOP 40 radio. Faber Drive, Marianas Trench, and even to a much larger degree Hedley dominate the airwaves. I'd venture to say now that Hedley is the largest band in the country, bigger than Nickelback, if it's being based on radio spins. Jordan and the Static guys are friends with all those bands, they chum together all the time, and when he sees the success they are all having with that formula, who can blame them for trying it? Rock radio neglected all those bands despite excellent early material that totally fit that format. (Coco you have first hand experience with this with the difference between Hedley's and Faber Drive's debut albums and their later albums.) HOT AC radio embraced them, so.....that's the music they are producing.
