Midge Ure, Snowy White & John Sykes came after, and yeah, I prefer this line-up to what i've heard of the live band after 1979.
Like I say, i'm at a disadvantage having never seen Phil live, but having live DVDs and CDs are all i'm ever going to be able to go on, and yes, I prefer the current line-up over the last line-up of the "original" band.
Untill Lynnott comes back to life, you're not really going to get a better line-up in this day & age...

The farewell tour line-up was one of the best live band's i've seen in a very long time.

They will never be Thin Lizzy in whatever guise live or recorded. Also having seen the 1979 tour along with before and after, the worse Thin Lizzy line up with Phil Lynott is better than any of the later versions.

Glad these guys are making new music though, as they are the best Thin Lizzy line-up since about 1979.
Shame Darren is leaving, he would have added a nice melodic edge and strengthened the vocal harmonies. I don't see how he can be leaving to focus on Dare? A band who don't really generate big money or album sales and release a "new" album every 5 years or so and don't really tour?
Would've been nice to see him stay on in a higher profile gig, but never mind.
I look forward to the new album they produce, although I am nervous that Kevin Shirley is producing. I'll just expect it to sound like it was recorded in a shed on a cassette recorder and hope for the best!

Yeah - that makes sense. It was the first album I heard in 2001 and I think my fondness for it comes from the fact it helped me through a difficult time. Plus, at that point I really dug things that weren't conventional and had loads of different styles. But from a purely musical point of view, Groo Grux is the perfect package.

The Dreaming Tree is so emotional it always gets me!! Spoon is great too and Alanis' vocals work really well. I also love Crush, and that whole romantic late night sax vibe it gives off. Simon? I'm not sure I know that one! Was that on Before These Crowded Streets or another release? Lifehouse did a great song called Simon but that's the only one I know. As I've already stated, Groo Grux was the first album that really clicked with me and I have since gone back listening to all the earlier albums and found gems here and there. Before These Crowded Street is way too hard for me to digest.

All these middle eastern influences annoys me a little and I don't think the songs are effective enough (lack the structure and directness I need)...if that makes sense. :-)

Love the more mellow and moody song on that album though, like "The Dreaming Tree" and "Spoon"....and I quite like "Simon" too. ;-)

Definitely agree, I think it's probably both his most consistent and accessible. As much as I love Before These Crowded Streets it is quite a dark record, and there are a lot of different styles all meshed together over some pretty long songs, which takes some time to process.

I must admit, I haven't listened much to any BCC album (yet) as I've found them quite boring. I have grown to really dislike Glenn Hughes, which is a little disturbing as I once loved his voice. I'll try to get into those album later on when I'm more in the mood for it.

Listening to the new DMB album right now, BTW. On my second spin and so far I must say I much prefer GrooGrux. Much more laid back and stripped down on this one. Good sound though.

You're right, the muddy thing is definitely the biggest issue. The bottom heavy approach works with certain artist for me, like Dream Theater, but not the more melodic bands who need that 'sparkle', and for some reason Bonamassa's guitar on the first BCC just lacked real rhythmic 'crunch'. If that makes sense? The second album was much better in that regard and Afterglow is their best sounding yet. I also thought he did a good job on Europe's new one as I like that 70's retro sound, although I know many won't agree!

He's not just divisive with fans though, apparently Adrian Smith has been really unhappy with the sound of the last couple of Maiden albums whilst Steve Harris obviously loves him!

For the most part I'm okay with what he does and think his contribution to Joe B's solo career has been huge, but as you say he does have some less than stellar moments too. Have no idea why, but my guess is that it's much due to the fact that he's trying very much to capture and achieve what the artist(s) wants and expects. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Many bottom heavy albums, definitely, but it's not always the bass/bottom end in itself that I see as a problem. It's often way too loose and boomy which makes the whole sound a little muddy and it certainly lacks the tightness and punch I really like. It's a fine line between those if you want it to sound a "live" as possible.

Then we have the vocal thing he did on the otherwise so brilliant Mr.Big album. Wow! that was annoying. :-)

He's certainly capable, but he clearly likes a certain sound that doesn't always work or appeal. But because he's so successful and in demand I think most musicians will probably do whatever he says without question. Fingers crossed for this project though as anything with Scott Gorham in will always get me excited! Not my favourite producer either, by far, but I can't say he's destroyed everything he's touched either, so I'm still hoping for a decent sounding album. :-)

It's mostly a case of albums being close to sounding really good, but ruiuned by some strange tweaks.
