Slade night tonight on BBC4

Kicks off with a repeat of the documentary 'It's Slade', followed by 'Slade at the BBC' which should be the highlight if they have managed to find some clips that haven't been seen before, and the night ends with their wonderful film 'In Flame'

If you haven't seen the film, I can't recommend it highly enough, it's superb, the band acquit themselves well as actors, and the soundtrack is, needless to say(but I'll say it anyway) wonderful. It's quite gutsy(the film that is!), not what you may have expected from them.

Plus, Pete came across like a miserable git when I met him in 2003, couldn't have been a more different story meeting him this year. Real nice bloke, autograph's, photo's, handshakes, etc
The energy they have together... it's a joy to see, especially with Andy, given his advanced years and recent health problems. He's rocking like a guy half his age!
I really hope someone picks up on the renewed energy of this band, and they are signed to a label and given the chance to shine on a proper tour. Either a smaller headlining tour with rock bands opening for them (not another 70's pop act) or on a bill with a "bigger" name headlining. I could see them opening for Joe Elliot's Down N Outz or Status Quo's Frantic Four Reunion shows, that kinda thing.
Niv

I was at the 2003 shows as well and I remember Pete singing with Sailor at the time. I'll be honest, I wasn't too sure about him at first but having finally seen him live and listened to the recent NYC and SFA Revisited albums, I'm totally hooked. The chemistry between Andy, Pete and Tony at the front of the stage is a joy to watch. I look forward to hearing more from this line-up. Hopefully Andy will get a round to putting out a new album of original material now following the success of the recent tour.

Jim

Re: The Sweet

Exactly the point I was making :-)
I think the current line-up are probably the strongest, since they were a 3 piece.
Paul Mario Day, Jeff Brown and Tony O'Hora were all very good lead vocalists, but with Pete Lincoln they have a great frontman who is more of a pop style singer, which fits the classic material, and they have a solid back-up with Andy and Tony being great singers in their own right.
Mal McNulty was never a good choice for Sweet in my mind, although he is a very talented musician, credit where it's due.
Bruce has been in the band 20 years now, almost as long as original drummer Mick Tucker was.
I saw Sweet in 2003 and they were good, but still had a bit of a cabaret feel to them (didn't help they were on a bill with The Rubettes and Sailor). I saw them a fortnight ago, and it was like seeing a different band! They had a great stage set-up, and looked and sounded like a rock band again. Great command of the stage, great presence, and the music just felt like it should do. I really hope this line-up sticks and there is more new material (and maybe a DVD), and their management get's them on some proper tours as opposed to these 70's Christmas-time package tours they tend to do...
Niv

Re: The Sweet

For a number of reasons, Steve and Andy don't get on despite Andy trying on a number of occasions to put something together with Steve. When Andy and Mick got back together, they invited Steve to join up with them and at first it looked as though he would but he eventually decided against it. Mal McNulty who now sings with Slade replaced him. Andy has kept the flag flying for The Sweet for years now and has continually put together excellent line-ups that have included Steve Mann (ex MSG, Lionheart, Liar, etc), Chad Brown (Lionheart), Jeff Brown (Wildfire and Statetrooper), Bruce Bisland (Praying Mantis, Tank, Wildfire, Statetrooper, Weapon, etc), Phil Lanzon (Grand Prix and now Uriah Heep), Paul Mario Day (Iron Maiden & Wildfire) and now Tony O'Hora (Praying Mantis). His band continues to tour the world and are a well respected live band. It kinda pissed me off when Steve put together his own band and called it Sweet, basically ignoring Andy and all the fans who have followed the "official" band over the years.

And can I just say in response to the previous post, The Sweet did not stop in 1978, but 1982. I take it you think the band ended when Brian Connolly was fired/quit. Mick, Steve and Andy recorded three great albums as a three piece - Cut Above The Rest, Water's Edge and Identity Crisis.

Jim

Then Andy & Mick reunited in 1986. Steve & Brian did some work with them in 1988 but it never went anywhere. Brian's health deteriorated quite a bit, Steve moved to America.
Mick left the band around 1991 due to ill health and Andy has continued ever since.
So I don't know which Sweet you're thinking of that called it quits in 1978? ;-)
I thought Steve Priest's Sweet had packed up? Seeing as Joe Retta, Stuart Smith & Richie Onori have all left to put Heaven & Earth back together?
Andy Scott's version, who have written and recorded new material and released live albums and toured regularly since 1986 are still going strong and have a very big following in Europe and oddly, Australia!
I really like Joe Retta's voice, so I look forward to what he'll do with Heaven & Earth, and that Sweet goes back to being Andy Scott's band again.
Niv

Mal McNulty is not a great vocalist, although he is the better guitar player of the 2.
If they had got a proper singer/songwriter in when Steve Whalley left, and actually made new music, and made the effort to be more than a Slade Tribute band, I think it would be a very different story.
Sweet on the other hand have made the effort, and have the best line-up since the mid-80's at present.
I hope there is new material from these guys, and now they have dropped the pop-medley (CoCo, Funny Funny & Poppa Joe) from their set and focus on a rock show, I would love to see them doing proper tours with out that "70's Hitz Cabaret" stigma. Maybe go out opening for another rock act as opposed to these 70's package tours... They put on a very fine rock show that I think would suprise alot of people.
Niv
