<title>Re: Following Producers/Producers you can't warm to</title><link>http://www.melodicrock.com/phorum52/read.php?1,921250,921334#msg-921334</link><description><![CDATA[ I liked Mike Fraser, Bob Rock, and Andy Johns for drum sounds.<br /><br />Quincy Jones was great up through around 1983.<br /><br />I like Bill Bottrell for recording vocals and dryer guitar sounds.<br /><br />Max Norman and Ron Nevison always got good guitar sounds but weren't so great with the rest of the band.<br /><br />Jon Brion gets great performances out of whoever he decides to record. Same with Ted Templeman.<br /><br />--------------<br /><br />Ones I don't often like: Rick Rubin, Toby Wright, Kelly Gray, Tom Werman, and a few others. Lots of people like Martin Birch, and I'm not a big fan of his sound even though he's done some classic albums.]]></description>

Beefed up some quality melodic rock acts and I love output with Hill involved from the likes of Winger, Warrant and my favourite Europe album of all they've done 'Prisoners in Paradise'.<br /><br />Beau Hill was on my list early nineties as a producer who seemed to guarantee albums I loved and still love to this day.]]></description>

I guess if you are working from say 1970 (In Rock) to ’92 (Fear of the Dark) there will be some variance. The bands he worked with were incredibly prolific of course. Whitesnake put out 9 albums with him in just 6 years, from Snakebite to Slide It In. It was 9 albums in 12 years with Maiden. Some achievement. I also like the fact that Birch was an engineer as well as producer.<br /><br />Totally agree about Assault Attack, great sound]]></description>

And I love Marti Fredreikson's work. SO very crystal clear--and not a bad songwriter eiher! I assume someone wil mention the dude from Giant-Dan Huff. Also fabulous at the production chair.<br /><br />For ones I can live w/o-- Shirley (of course). Nevison for his 'bassless' recordings.Ruined many good/great 80's bands albums. Jeff Lynne has gotten very muffly over time,too. He boogered up Joe Walsh's new /great cd pretty well. I love the album,but hate Lynne's production on it. T]]></description>

The band's turnaround was when they got Mike Shipley to do &quot;Pull&quot;, and since then Kip has come into his own producing for his solo stuff, the classical albums, and the last 2 Winger albums. Although on &quot;IV&quot; I think he should have pulled back a bit on the 'modern/alternative' sound, by &quot;Karma&quot; he apparently went back to the band's roots.<br /><br />So as far as the list goes...<br /><br />Not-so-hot: Beau Hill, Mutt Lange<br /><br />Working on it: Kip Winger<br /><br />I'd give a listen, at least: Mike Shipley<br /><br />The Master: Alan Parsons]]></description>

Seldom gets much mention these days as he is from days of yore. There are few with a track record that compares with classic Purple,Rainbow,Maiden,Dio-era Sabbath, Whitesnake..<br /><br />Made in Japan, Stargazer, Heaven and Hell all sound pretty good even now. I find it strange that he has been overlooked when it comes to giving out the old 'living legends' type gongs for music biz types that Classic Rock et al promote. Especially when he was behind In Rock, Machine Head, Number of the Beast.]]></description>
