My 20yr old son loves many of the old rock/metal bands I grew up listening to, and we have very similar tastes with current bands. He did get a little lost when he was around 8 years old and was listening to some mainstream pop music, but that didn't last long. My mother enjoys musicals and pop, a la Celine Dion, Whitney Houston etc. My father likes Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Mountain and most '70s bands, but I think he died a little inside when I went through a decade-long 'rap' phase. Since then, I slowly developed a taste in modern metal, then regressed into older bands (that the old man would appreciate) and in the last five years, have expanded into melodic rock. Perhaps my mother having a taste for powerful singers influenced my future love of some of the MR/AOR greats. It took a good fifteen years, but I think I've finally come around to the 'rents way of thinking...

To this day, I still am a huge big band fan.

At 13, I went from Count Basie to KISS! As long as my grades were good, my parents did not mind buying me KISS, Whitesnake, AC/DC or Maiden records. But when they went through a more difficult phase, my "noise collection" was threatened by unhappy parents! :-) Overall, my folks have always supported my tastes. My dad - who basically thinks that every new type of music that was invented after 1950 is too modern - always had the curiosity / interest to still listen to some of my stuff. I remember him liking Michael Schenker's "Bijou Pleasurette" or Whitesnake's "Belgian Tom's Hat Trick". My mom was never fond of Ace Frehley's "Shock Me" though! LOL

I have always spoken about "my" music with one of my nieces. She went through her teenage years thinking I am an old fart. She was listening to rap and radio stuff. In her early 20's now, she is taking up drums and loving Iron Maiden, Motorhead and other metal bands. She is even "jealous" of me because I have seen these guys back in their heydays. She is asking questions about how it was back then, etc. and I am happy to indulge :-) I went from "old fart" to "cool Uncle" LOL

Re: Can you ever!!!!!

I grew up in with parents very passionate for classical music. While that wasn't the music I ended up falling in love with, that certainly introduced me to a great appreciation for music (much like my father music is a part of my every day life).

So, as a result of music being constantly played in our household and to answer the thread, yes my kids have all picked up a good appreciation for music, and certainly too for our own music. Best though is the fact they are making their own decisions regarding what they do and don't like (their primary choice is of course current pop radio etc but focus more often than not toward Adele/Pink etc).

And fascinating too just what they manage to soak in;

I recently put on a tune from the new Tremonti album and before the vocals had even kicked in my 10yr old son asked if it was the new Creed/Alter Bridge record!? I was proud to say the least cause damned if I could identify with guitarists like that at his age (and for the most part still can't LOL).

Sorry for all the edits...
