the harder side of rock

Like mostof you I prefer a more melodic style hard rock/metal, but there are times when I look to something more heavy. I am the opposite of most of my friends where as they get older they like less and less hard music i have gone the other way.

however..two huge heavy metal acts that I have tried and tried but just cant get into or get...and thats Motorhead and Slayer. Moterhead is more of a straight forward heavy metal band but not much melody , all songs sound similiar and while I respect lemmy for not caving into trends he cant sing. slayer on the other hand to me, i just dont get. I dont mind screaming or more growling singing but i see nothing in their music thats appealing. however i again respect them for not chasing trends...probably why both bands continue to do well all these years later.

Re: the harder side of rock

I really like Motorhead. However, they are probably the heaviest band I can take.

I have never been into thrash/speed metal and never understood the appeal, and musiciality, if any, of bands like Slayer, Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura, Exodus, Testament, Anthrax, Metal Church or Megadeth. I have heard them all and they all sound like more or less organized noise to my ears.

Motorhead have a different swing. They are heavy but there is an element of rock'n'roll, and blues, that make them sound different. I hear more melody in their music, and Lemmy's lyrics are generally speaking very good, something I cannot really say of most of the above mentioned acts. I hear some black music in Motorhead that I do not in other extreme metal bands.

My main issues with these bands are a) the lack of groove in the drumming department and b) the horrible singing (I know it sounds ironic as I "like" Lemmy but I feel he at least tries to sing).

I've been rewarded with some of most intense, brutal music I've ever laid ears to. It's fast and furious, a locomotive barreling down greased rails. Hard to believe they've kept up that aggression for some 30 years now. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman may not be incredible soloists, but they are extremely creative with their riffs and they make one hell of a rhythm machine. And I can understand some people like singers like Joey Belladonna or David Wayne - I do too - but those vocal styles would not work in Slayer. Love 'em or loathe 'em, Slayer is what it is - they've always remained true to their vision, they pull no punches and they are still at the top of their game.

Musically they have come up with some classic riffs and they get the adrenaline going. The 'singing' on the other hand is a weak link. I prefer thrash with reasonable singing like Metal Church, Anthrax and such like.

Motorhead I have tried (and generally failed) to get into. I like a handful of songs, Killed By Death, Ace Of Spades Iron Horse etc but I can't help feeling there's an element of the emperor's new clothes about them. Lemmy's an intelligent chap, I'm sure he could do better if he tried harder. Three chords over a distorted bassline gets boring fast. And if you listen to the very first album 'On Parole' he can actually sing properly when he wants to.
