Searching for Sugar Man

A documentary film about an early 70's Detroit, inner city musical poet.

A real life Cinderella story.

See it if you can.

I'd love to read some opinions but to me it was a beautiful story of art, triumph, humility and grace.

(I'm only commenting on the movie, I have yet to learn much about the artist)

He could go out and play some dates. He ran for office. He even got his philosophy degree. Doesn't change the fact that he had no idea that he was an icon in a country of 40 million 1/2 way around the world.

People love to shit on Cinderella stories. Me, I like to believe there's a pun-kin coach headed down the road to pick me up at any minute....lol

To further my point: I know my cd "the world is round" is being bootlegged and sold out of china. It's on Ebay. Not much I can do. Buuuuuuttt...if you told me I was huge in some city or province in china and was an inspiration to a group of dissidents or young folk fighting the government I would be shocked, amazed and honored. I wouldn't move to china though. It wouldn't be instant success anywhere else. I think it would make a fascinating story though. Which is all i said the movie was. As for the article by lefstetz...he also manipulated some facts, to be the contrarian. Sensationalization is part of the game. Just you tube an episode of "here comes honey boo boo." sensationalism = views.

I enjoyed the movie and made no claim to it's authenticity. That's the beauty of art and news ...everyone gets to have their own opinion.

I do take some issue with the dates on the bottom of the article you posted. Clearly the movie and the 60 minutes piece state that 1998 was when he played south Africa and clearly it was sometime before that when he found out that he was more successful than he imagined in a place that was very very far from his home. The dates in the bottom of the article are after that.

What he did after 1998 is not the story to me (to me, notice this is my opinion). It's what happened for the 25 years between 1973 and 1998 I found fascinating

Thanks for sending the counterpoint... JL
