What if?

Just curious as to other peoples opinions.

What if bon Scott had not died and continued on as lead singer for ac/dc, and lets say they released back in black just the same . would it been as massive as it was and would ac/dc be arguably the biggest band in world even now in 2012? ....my take is no to both. I think they were clearly on the upswing and finally broke through in the states with highway to hell. but i think the publicity they had with bon's death got them alot of attention that really helped them with back in black. I also feel while I love bon scott, i do think brian johnson had a stronger and more powerful voice. I do think they would have been big but not near as big long term.

and..What if David lee roth had never left van halen, would they just have continued with million selling albums etc? ...I again say no to an extent. I will be honest and say while i am roth fan, I much prefer van hager. But the reason i say no, is because I feel the band at the time of diver down and even 1984 had kinda got into a rut. yes 1984 was their biggest album and huge singles but mtv helpd that alot. I think they woudl have continued to go more in a pop direction with roth lead (not that they didnt do pop with hager they did but they also did things roth coudl not and would not do). I think they would have sold well but I really think the van hagar era helped kinda reinvent the band some, and that is taking awayt from nothing of the roth era which i still like along with the new album.

opinions?

And the music would have been far superior. But I do think that the pop smarts of Sammy Hagar is what allowed them to have a huge hit with "Right Now" during the middle of the first wave of grunge. That was quite a trick.

The main thing is--both bands released arguably their best albums after the singer changes. This,MTV,media coverage, etc all added up to their heightened success. Impossibe to speculate how their popularity would have continued w/o the changes. Maybe wouldn't have continued as long as they had-the changes gave them new life and longevity. Hope the very same thing happens for Gotthard! lOts of folks seem to love the new cd w/ Nic. It'd sure be cool to see them keep going strong! T

For one thing the album title would not have been Back In Black and i doubt the Song Back In Black would have ever been written. Back in Black is the only album i care for with Brian Johnson on vocals. To me when Bon Scott died any hint of the blues Ac/Dc had went with him.

Re: What if?

On AC/DC: the publicity around Bon's death certainly helped them, so I think you're right about that. Brian's voice stronger than Bon's though? Don't make me laugh. AC/DC stopped existing for me when Scott died. Do I hate their work with Johnson? No, but I don't love it either. Except for a few tracks (You Shook Me All Night Long, Heatseaker, Who Made Who, For Those About To Rock, Night Of The Long Knives) there isn't much I like about AC/DC with BJ.

On VH: I think they made a brilliant comeback with 1984 after the hideous Diver Down, so they were on the up again. The publicity (again) around Roth leaving and Hagar entering sure helped them with getting even bigger, but 5150 also was a great album (their best IMHO), so I just think everything fell into place for them at that time.
