Shooting a Music Video - Opinions Wanted :)

Hey guys,

We're going to be shooting a music video next weekend and it is essentially going to be a band performance video. The band on record is me, Rick, and our drummer Paul Higgins. In addition to playing all the guitars, I played the bass on the record which leads me to my question...

Should I have a friend stand-in as a bass player in the video just to round out the visual? Or should I have Rick (vocals) play the bass for the video (he's a good guitarist but he doesn't really play much bass...trying to play bass in the video could inhibit his overall performance energy in the video). Or, should we just play as a three piece without a bass player at all for the video since we were the only ones playing on the CD? Of course the audio for the video will be right off the CD so everyone would be hearing the bass for the video along with keyboards. Perhaps we need to project a hologram of Eric Ragno. Now where is that old Artoo unit..."Help us Obi Wan Ragno...You're our only hope!" ;-)

So, what are your thoughts? It probably doesn't matter much what we do but I'm open for some opinions. :)

Thanks guys!

It's actually a tongue-in-cheek homage to some very fun topics wrapped into a theme song for a specific show. It's a very energetic song with lots of words (it's all about the lyrics here because that's where the fun is) and I actually change keys four times during the song as part of the frantic humor. (AM, A#M, DM, EM) The musical style and feel of this song would fit very well with "I'd Do Anything" off the new CD though this song is even faster at 164 BPM. And to complete the humor and energy, the song ends with a gong! LOL!! It's all part of the ridiculous over-the-top energy of the song. It's just really funny. Hopefully you'll get to hear this song really very, very soon. While the song likely won't propel you to raise your rock horns in the air, I'm pretty sure it'll make you smile and have a good chuckle. :)

Paul

It could only be one. We have a ton of ambition but very little time and so many variables that are out of our control that we could be left with nothing or we could get to do both. Truth be told, we'd like to do three videos eventually. The third would be for a fun song that isn't even on the CD that was just mastered today but that's another story...the third video isn't one to be taken seriously but is certainly going to be entertaining. Sometimes you just want to have fun and that would be the case of the third video. :) I'm hoping this fun bonus song will get my music heard by many, many people in the US that wouldn't ordinarily be aware of recent melodic rock releases. It's a long shot but what the heck...we had a great time writing and recording the song.

Paul

She models for one of those men's magazines that is just barely within the confines of being mainstream and not naughty. :) (I have forgotten the name of the magazine or i'd tell you) We did consider getting her to dress up for the part but I don't think the video director can coordinate her in time but it would have been cool! :) She wouldn't have been playing bass. It would be very appropriate if we do the song we are thinking of doing where we want to shoot it (much depends on insurance for the site because there is an element of danger involved) and weather, then the superhero chick would be perfect for some cutaway shots. But for the most part, it's going to be the band playing in (hopefully) an interesting and dynamic setting. :) There are way too many moving parts for these video shoot(s). Hopefully we get something cool. If not, it's going to be an expensive but fun adventure.

Paul

Let him be himself and portray the band as they really are!

Hence... You're going to need a fill in on bass for the live shows right? So what harm is it getting a fill in for the video shoot even if they're only in the background and never really 'identified' kinda crazy but sensible I think!?

Otherwise you could simply throw in some snippets of a bass line being played here and there without actually revealing the 'player' kinda like a watered down stand-in... But knowing the crazy netloop world we live in someone would recognize 'your' hands playing the bass or something LOL...

What song are you releasing as a video?
