...well, the record labels haven't learned a damn thing yet !!!

...excuse me while I rant for just a bit here. What the hell are these opportunistics idiots thinking with ? Their asses ? The music business in general is in the can, so some brilliant mind comes up with the idea to feed the current resurgent appetite for vinyl but at crazy inflated prices !!! Come on, $21 U.S. for VINYL ??? I don't care how high the 'grade' is or what other silly excuse they might come up with for such a crazy business model. Yeah, that's it. Let's resurrect old technology (don't get me wrong, I love my vinyl) and yeah, let's jack the price up to match the assanine (sp?) prices of popcorn and coke at the movies. Yeah, that's it. The movie biz is givin' em' a good screwin', let's give em' a shot ourselves while they're over the barrel. What the hell are these folks thinking ? That all us music lovers are going to rush down to the music store (oh wait, most of those are closed now) and load up to check out ? When I can get ALL the great vinyl that I want anyday at the used record store for 2 bucks ? ...or 50 cents a pop if I shop smart ? Sheesh !!! And we wonder why the biz is going down the crapper.

When there are high prices consumers substitute towards cheaper priced alternatives, even if those alternatives are imperfect. To the extent your feeling is shared by others, we can expect prices to come down. I just don't think it will- people recognize they are buying a very specialized product.

Other things that might drive down the price of vinyl is improvements in technology, entry of new firms into the business, lower prices for turntables, etc.

But I don't think any of these will be substantive enough to drive vinyl prices down over the next 10 years.

Vinyl is warmer. It feels right. May well depend on your age - I started buying records in 1984 so kind of miss it.

If you grew up in the era of cd's then you may well never know the joy of buying vinyl, even the smell of the inner covers.

My copy of Mechinical Resonance from 1987 smells wonderful!!!!

The former appeals to a general audience; the latter appeals to collectors (i.e., audiophiles). There are lots of substitutes for the former (radio, mp3s, youtube, etc), while there aren't many substitutes at all for the latter (maybe Japanese CD pressings?).

The more the former looks like the latter - e.g., obscure artists with small print runs issued on foreign labels - the more the prices will be similar or converge. In five years, CD prices may well be the same as vinly if things go entirely digital, and physical product (of any kind) become a specialized market.

In my view, prices are efficient - a consequence of institutional structure, demand, and supply. It's not a matter of what they should or ought to be.
