Backing Up

Wardy's misfortune below got me thinking how others back up their music.

My music (23,000+ songs) is all stored on my iMac hard drive, which is fully backed up on external hard drive.

All CD's are clearly available to reload if everything crashes but I also copy any electronic only music files onto backup DVD's.

So, three versions of everything - hard copy (CD or DVD), iMac and external drive.

Is this OTT?

It would kill me if I lost photos of my young son. I have photos stored on a 500GB internal drive, videos stored on a 1TB internal drive. All my user files are backed up via Crashplan online. Additionally, I use Crashplan to send important user files to my laptop as a final line of defence......oh, and I have a 2TB drive which I update every 6 months or so which I keep in my garage.
I think I'm a bit OTT, but with the relatively low cost of storage I thought better to be safe than sorry. :-)

Re: daggreen Crashplan

Hiya, I have an appalling home broadband connection but Crashplan has managed to upload pretty well for me. On average I can upload around 10GB a day. I tried Carbonite, Mozy and finally Crashplan and settled on Crashplan for the low cost (4 years service for around £90), unlimited storage and ability to back up to external drives and also to friends computers. 99.9% of the time it has performed superbly well and given me no issues whatsoever, but I must say they rushed a recent "upgrade" out a month or so ago and it was a nightmare, killed my connection for a week or two but that is now fixed and I've uploaded 100GB of files in the last 7 - 10 days. In total, I have 1.4TB uploaded (I've had Crashplan about 9 months and all my files are uploaded) and whenever I've needed to do a restore I have no problems at all.
Another good touch with Crashplan is you can access the files from an iPhone. You find the uploaded files you want and in seconds they are stored on your phone. A great feature.
I'd recommend it, but best used in conjunction with a conventional HDD...
Hope this helps

Most were originally ripped in Wav format, as I didn't really know anything about other lossless formats. But once I realised that Flac files take up a lot less space, I converted the Wav files to Flac and played them using the Foobar player, as Windows Media Player doesn't support Flac. Although I don't really like Flac files, as they don't display ID tags in the folders. A few months back I found out about the 'Windows Media Audio 10' lossless format, and it displays all ID tags just like the Wav files did, and like Flac, they take up a lot less space than Wav files do, so I've been converting them all again so I can play them using Windows Media Player.
