GUARDIAN / VIXEN "Kickstarter" Campaigns...

Went to the links from the frontpage:
Both GUARDIAN / VIXEN ask their fans to finance their new albums thru "Kickstarter" Campaigns... ( a method done successfully by MARILLION or SPOCKS BEARD before)

So far GUARDIAN have 52 Backers who paid $2,807
(pledged of $30,000 goal by April 21st to produce the album in English and Spanish)

VIXEN so far have 9 Backers who paid (donated) $567
pledged of $35,000 goal

I am not quoting what they offer for what, just what do you guys think of this ?

I think for artists that don't have the backing or the financial capabilities to do things the traditional way, it's a new avenue to get their fans the product they want. I don't see any of these artists having any type of strong financial backing. Vixen maybe the most main stream of those mentioned, but unless it's the original lineup, nobody would front money for them.

Re: John Schlitt...

This (IMO of course) is what he did not deliver on:

Quote

THE VISION

“The Greater Cause” will be the title of my fourth solo album. The project is intended to be a fresh and powerful tool to accomplish what God has been doing through me for many years: connecting and encouraging people through my music. I’ve learned a lot since the release of “The Grafting” as an independent artist on my own label and I want to take it to the next level with this new album.

In these days filled with uncertainty and insecurity - both economically and politically - we as Christians need to remind each other who Christ is and who we are in Him. We need to use common sense in this world and awaken to the fact that Jesus is Lord, no matter what those around us may say – or do. This is my goal with “The Greater Cause.”

THE REASON

I’ve been in music for the greater part of my life… it’s what I do. I have been given a musical platform to speak from; I pray the message has been and will be heard through the lyrics of my songs and through my life.

The message is – and always has been – to encourage the listener to grasp the reality that we are on the winning team. The enemy is escalating his tactics, using every possible means he can to keep people from the truth - the truth that they are made in the image of God and are designed for a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. Our Lord is alive and through Him we are to be victorious in His perfect plan for us - a plan that was designed for us from the beginning of time.

Regardless of the listener's beliefs, I think it is clear that an album in which the lyrics don't mention the name Jesus Christ (or even refer to him in any obvious way) cannot be seen to deliver on the premise outlined by John in the above quote. John said he wanted the listener to be awakened to the fact that "Jesus is Lord". He said he "pray[ed] the message... will be heard through the lyrics of my songs...".

From my perspective that is a very admirable desire. Also from my perspective, he did not deliver.

They are not 'preaching it up' like Schlitt was, so all I am looking for from them is some good old fashioned geetar-thrashing skin-bashing keyboard-crunching rock 'n roll! Which means Guardian should make me happy one way or another, and John Elefante is on the way to being convinced to turn the amps up as well!

I should say that Elefante has already delivered some fantastic bonus downloads (exclusively for ALL backers whatever level of support) so my advice is give him a few bucks. It is already well worth it!

Cheers my dears.

Marillion have been doing this for years. I believe It Bites may well have gone down this route, too [although I'm not 100% sure].

As Coco said, it would have to take something/someone extremely special to get me to donate to such a scheme. And even then, there's no way i'd stump up more than the cost of buying the finished product. Welsh band 'The Blackout' used a similar scheme to raise £40,000 to finance their 3rd album. They took donations, but also auctioned off things like 'Meet & Greets' and the band coming to your house and playing a set in your living room.

I will be seriously surprised if Vixen come anywhere close to their intended target. I thing they will be lucky to reach $10,000.
