On a dark desert highway.......

...cool wind in my hair.

Hey folks, I was wondering.....can anyone explain the song Hotel California to me?? The details, the story, the symbolism, what the hell it all means, what it stands for.

I will sit here eating my Day of the Dead sugar skulls while you folks reply.
So take your time.

Cheers,

Jack.

The story he told revolved around the guys having contacted an ancient spirit (or demon) known as Baal. Apparently, this spirit was extremely malicious and caused many, many problems for everyone when Rainbow was in the studio recording "Long Live Rock and Roll" in the late '70s. If you read the liner notes for that album, it even states in the "Thank You" section, "No thanks to Baal." Strange, but true. Hope this has helped.
Don

RE: Another religious rant...

Be forewarned everyone, this rant consists entirely of religious discussion and opinion. If you're offended or put off by such posts, please don't read any further.

Lil Al, I wrote this in response to your post...

"Sir,"

...Geez, not even my students call me that. Thanks! It somehow makes me feel important. ;-)

"I really liked your post; very informative."

...Well, I'm glad that at least someone found it to be so. After I wrote it I kinda found myself wondering WHY I wrote it. Know what I mean?

"But I was raised Catholic, until I got older and started asking questions...."

...For me, you have just hit the nail on the head. I REALLY don't want to offend anyone, but since all of this has come up, I've just gotta share these thoughts: From my experience, the Catholic Church does not take too well to its members asking questions. It would rather that they followed like sheep, never questioning, and trusting in the Church's leaders unconditionally. When I stated that I am a Christian, I did not mean that I am THAT kind of a Christian. I am not trying to come off as "holier than thou," but I do firmly believe that God gave us our brain and intellect so that we could use them in an effort to search for His truth. Questioning, discussing, reflecting, pondering, interpreting and, ultimately, deciding what that truth is, is, I believe, a crucial part of that search. To each their own, but personally, I could never be a part of any religious organization that discouraged me from reading, researching, learning, and being a part of that search.

"now I'm 42 and I believe that most religions are for weak minded individuals."

...We'll have to agree to disagree here. IMO, SOME religions are for weak-minded individuals. And some encourage their followers to be or become weak-minded individuals. But I believe that you are HUGELY mistaken if you are lumping all Christians into this category as a result of your Catholic upbringing. Again, though, that's just my opinion.

"Oh, I believe in God, Jesus did walk the earth."

...Yep, that's pretty much an "historic fact," if there is such a thing. Few would dispute Jesus' existance.

"But when MAN gets involved thats when the trouble starts........The Pope just apologized for the Holocaust, so when do they get around to saying 'Sorry about those Crusades'."

...I know exactly what you are saying here. Throughout history, a tremendous amount of evil has been committed in God's name. And it's still happening. But that is not what I believe God wants. Furthermore, although I am reluctant to point this out (and I suspect that I am REALLY gonna make some enemies here), but by which church has the overwhelming majority of this evil has been committed? Think about it a moment. Now, I am not by any stretch of the imagination claiming that the Catholic Church is the only church that is guilty or that struggles with corruption. On the contrary, I fully realize that there are many churches out there that have been filled with corruption for many, many years. But (again, I've come this far, so I've just gotta say this:) in my mind, the Catholic Church is far more guilty than the other churches. I mean, even the very idea of a pope and papal infallibility (spelling?) is offensive to me. This guy is as human as you and I, and he is certainly fallible. I will spare you the details, but, based on the research that I've done in my lifetime, I have come to the conclusion that this whole notion is absolutely NOT biblical (along with Purgatory, and several other Catholic ideas). Rather, it's an invention devised to help control the masses. Personally, I am very bothered when people equate Christianity with the Catholic church. Now, I'm not an idiot. I fully understand why it happens (it's a HUGE organization), but it still bothers me.

"I know it sounds like a Monty Python skit but Mans Inhumanity to his fellow man pisses me off bigtime...."

...Again, I hear what you are saying and agree. But think about it this way: if people actually did follow God's commandments and Christ's example, this world would be a MUCH different place. (As you said in your closing, "Be Excellent to each Other.") Religion and Christianity DO have their place. And no matter how many problems you or I might have with a specific church or with a specific group of Christians, and no matter how many hypocrites there may be out there attending church on a regular basis as a front for their corrupt lifestyles, and no matter how much tele-evangelists might make a mockery of the Christian religion, those are not valid reasons to dismiss or "write off" Christianity. The way I see it, each person can only worry about his or her own self and his or her own relationship with God. It's like I tell my students at school: 'Don't concern yourselves with other people's behaviour. You can't control it. Just make sure that your own behaviour is what it should be."

The bottom line: So many people terminate their relationships with God and/or the church because of a bad experience (and those come in a zillion different varieties). But, in my mind, this would be just like giving up on buying music because you bought a turd of a CD (and we've all bought our fair share of those!). As frustrating and crushing as a bad experience might be (whether it be with CD purchasing or the church), is a learning opportunity. IMO, it should just cause a person to be that much more careful and committed to weeding out the bullsh*t. Indeed, rather than causing one to give up, it should just make a person that much more diligent in his/her search for the "good stuff," 'cuz the good stuff is definitely out there! Here's hoping we all find it.

And speaking of good stuff (and on a music note), the new Praying Mantis album "Forever In Time" is rocking my world right now. It's simply incredible. Classy metal with crystal clear, clean vocals (remniscent of John Wetton), and more melody than I ever expected to hear on a metal release. We have a winner here!

Anyhow, I'd better step down off my soapbox before I break my neck. For those of you who were offended by this, I do apologize. In almost three years of posting here, I have never made a secret of the fact that I'm a Christian, but I've also never preached before. I guess there's a first time for everything.
Don

Ronnie wasn't aware that Kerry had become a Christian since Livgren asked him to sing on the record until it was 'too late'. It freaked him out completely once he put 2 N 2 together in the studio! Apparently, those 2 guys had connected sometime prior to the 'incident' when Kerry was still heavily into the occult, which Dio is/was, too, to a degree (don't know if Blackmore introduced him to it or whether it goes back further...). And it never drove me to sacrifice a goat at midnight on a full moon to the Dark Lord while dancing naked and aroused around a pentacle drawn in the dirt with my own blood ...

I do remember when _HC_ came out that some people went off on it being satanic. But these were the same people touted the fact that if you played a record backwards you would hear messages from Satan. And these people are COMPLETE and TOTAL F*CKING MORONS. These people had an agenda, they believed prejudicially that rock music was satanic (since they could not find these songs in their hymnals at church?), and they warped reality to match their beliefs (like God burying dinosaur bones to test our faith.)

Now Henley, the guy who wrote the lyrics, says that this songs is not about Satanism, then I believe him, especially more so than the closed minded morons. I suspect that if Henley wanted to write a song about Satan then he would have been more direct about it, like Judas Priest or Ozzy (both of whom I think did that just to yank the fundamentists chain).

RE: On a dark desert highway.......

I think it's pretty obvious what 'Hotel California' is all about. A lot of musicians who came of age in the late 60's/early 70's dabbled in Satanism/the occult while subscribing to the whole hippie philosophy. Manson and his whole clan did, and so did - for a time anyway - the Beatles, the Stones, particularly Mick Jagger who hung out with a filmmaker named Kenneth Anger, a Crowley and/or LaVey disciple (not to mention people like Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore). It's kinda weird - on the surface the love, peace & happiness vibe seems to clash with the negativism/darkness associated with Satanism, on the other hand it makes sense that naive hippies would be attracted to it since Satanism represents something equally anti-establishment. Satanism was another way to express rebellion in the age of rebellion, San Francisco, and CA in general, being the center/point of origin of that whole movement (which would also explain why the Church of Satan got started there).

I think a lot of people have a hard time believing that an all-American band like The Eagles would have anything to do with Satanism. After all, it's so much easier for mom and dad to think only Black Sabbath and Marilyn Manson worship the devil because it confirms all the stereotypes. The reality is often very different. Like, who'd ever believe that someone like Kerry Livgren from Kansas, another all-American band, was heavily into black magic and Satanism before an incident literally put the fear of God in him and he subsequently became a Christian just prior to 'Seeds Of Change'...?

Interesting subject anyway...

The song & satanism-more than you ever thought

...you'd know...

Hi guys,

Although I don't have all of the details, I have been fairly aware of the story behind this song for quite a few years now. I honestly can't remember where I heard it, but it seems to me that it might have been during a band biogrpahy or an interview with one or more members of the band. It definitely wasn't from any kind of religious fanatic trying to convince the world that all rock music is "of the devil." Anyways, you guys did basically piece together the story that I read/heard.
Here's some additional info. that might interest you...

-The hotel written about in the song was definitely a real hotel that was used/run by a group practicing satanism and the black arts. Apparently, at least some of the group did have contact with the establishment, although whether or not it was accidental I don't know. The song was inspired by the whole experience.

-The line about not having "that spirit here since 1969" did, indeed, refer to the fact that wine wasn't served or carried by the hotel because of its connection with the Christian sacrament of holy communion. See, religion is kind of an area of interest for me. I have studied numerous religions over the past twenty years or so purely for interest's sake. And, although I don't claim to be an expert by any means, satanism is one of the religions that I have researched in some detail. I don't know if that seems twisted or not, given the fact that I am very much a Christian. I guess you can chock it up to a genuine interest and an open mind. Anyways, there are many different branches of satanism, with The Temple of Set and Anton LaVey's (also spelled LeVay) Church of Satan being two of the more common ones. Regardless of which branch of the religion they follow, many satanists will try to "pervert" and renounce fundamental elements of Christianity (the most common example of which is probably the upside-down cross) as part of their rituals and even as a part of their every day existance. Thus, for a group of practicing satanists to avoid serving or partaking of wine (and red wine in particular), this would be a way of renouncing one element of Christianity. Some groups also practice black masses in which they drink a perverted version of communion wine, which could contain a mixture of such substances as blood, alcohol, urine, semen, vomit, etc. (Yum, eh?) LaVey himself performed a satanic wedding ceremony and baptized his daughter, Karla, into his satanic church.

-I believe that when someone in this thread mentioned the hooded figure on the hotel record cover, that they actually meant Anton LaVey, rather than Aleister Crowley. Although I have no proof that it was LaVey in the photo, it seems likely. A little background info. here will help to explain why:

As was mentioned earlier, LeVay was the founder of a very popular branch of satanism (again, known as "The Church of Satan"), and the author of several books, the most common of which is "The Satanic Bible." Apparently, since its inception in the 1960s, LaVey's branch of satanism has had quite an impressive following, including a surprisingly large number of celebrities (like, for example, Jayne Mansfield, Sammy Davis Jr., and more recently, characters such as Marilyn Manson, etc.). LaVey was known to be an extremely colorful character. He did not believe that satan was actually a being/character as some proponents of the Christian faith suggest. Rather, he believed that satan was a power or a force. He also believed that the devil was a scapegoat that was invented mankind so that we could blame our "evil" nature on someone besides ourselves. He delighted, though, in role-playing the part of the devil, and prided himself in looking the part. His head was shaved bald, and he had a dark goatee (to me, he looked like a circus performer, and, interestingly, he was at one point). He was known to wear costumes such as hooded cloaks and/or horns and a tail. His house looked the part, and he enjoyed playing eerie organ music at high volume for hours at a time (he was, at one time, also a professional organist). Here's an interesting sidenote: He died on October 29, 1997, but his death certificate states that he died on October 31st (Halloween). Anyways, I am sure that he would have enjoyed partaking in the photoshoot when the Eagles' album cover was being put together. It sounds like the kind of publicity stunt that would have been right up his alley.

-It would take too long to discuss the song in its entirety, but suffice it to say that it is, indeed, written about an experience with the occult. It would not surprise me in the least to learn that at least some of the members of the Eagles dabbled in or at least did some investigating in this area. You see, satanism is actually a very attractive religion. It teaches that Christianity has duped mankind by introducing to us the notion of evil and sin. Its followers believe that we are just another species of animals and that, like animals, we should feel free to follow any and all of our desires, whatever they may be. We should not concern ourselves with right and wrong, good and evil. In essence, satanism has a problem with the human conscience. Satanists would have us believe that we don't need a conscience or an innner voice, or even common sense to tell us what's right and what's wrong. Rather, they believe that we should feel free to do whatever we feel we want to do. See, it's a religion that encourages people to focus on themselves and their own interests, desires, etc. For this reason, and because of the fact that it does often seem to allow it's followers to increase their riches, power, etc., it is actually a very attractive religion. Unless, of course, you have any faith at all in God, an afterlife, and/or an existance beyond this world...

Geez, I never expected this post to be this long. Yet, somehow it's fitting given the fact that Halloween is just nicely finished for another season. The congregation is dismissed. I'll see you all again next Sunday, LOL!
Pastor Don

Most people have no idea the song refers to the Church of Satan, which happens to be located in a converted HOTEL on CALIFORNIA street! On the inside of the album cover, looking down on the festivities, is Anton Lavey, the founder of the Church of Satan and author of the Satanic Bible! People say, the Eagles aren't serious, they're just selling records. That's what you think! The Eagles manager, Larry Salter, admitted in the Waco Tribune-Herald, (Feb. 28, 1982) that the Eagles were involved with the Church of Satan! Not surprisingly, one of the Eagles's songs is titled "Have A Good Day in Hell."

If you want to check it out for yourself, heres the url:

http://av1611.org/rock.html

It lists all the "usual suspects", like W.A.S.P.,Marilyn Manson, Slayer, etc.
Tinger

If it were about an asylum as you say, people in the lobby would have had on straight jackets and their would have been Doctors around. That wasn't the case! The lyrics of the song hit too much around the subject of Crowley’s following to just be several coincidences. It’s obvious what the song is about.

To me the only real question is: Did they do it because they really worship the devil or just for the publicity to sell the album?

When you ask yourself this question, keep in mind that Don Henley’s initials are also the same as “Devil Hell”! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh

RE: On a dark desert highway.......

Guys, I too have heard people claim that this song is about satanism. I can see how people who are really trying to make that connection can find a few lyrics to sort of fit that theme. Aleister Crowley was NOT in the album photo since he died 30 years before the album was released! :)

I know the guys in the Eagles actually hate this song because of all of the negative publicity this song has brought them. For the record, the song is actually about an insane asylum. I heard Don Henley explain this with much pain because of all of the controversy surrounding the song.

The Eagles certainly are not a Satanic band. One amusing note to add...I was a victim of this "Eagles=Cult" rumor when I was a kid. My sister believed this crap, told my mom, and the two of them smashed my Hotel California album with a hammer (never try this yourself - when they finally break, sharp shards of vinyl go flying everywhere like blinding pieces of shrapnel!!!) The funniest thing of all is that my Kiss Destroyer album somehow escaped this tragic fate! LOL! :)

Paul

RE: On a dark desert highway.......

Now, this will sound like a lot of bullshit, but this one guy came to my school one day and gave a lecture on Satanism and what not. Well, he made a pretty good argument for the song being about the Satanic Church founded by Mr Crowley. I don't actually believe this shit, but it makes for an interesting interpretation:

Hotel California

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
>>>(Supposedly the church itself)

My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
>> (The lurig Mistress - you know skanky dress, huge boobs, kinda like Elvira)

I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
>>(Black mass taking place...)

I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain,
'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'
>>(Now this is where it gets kinda Erie. The Satanic Church was founded in 1969. And of course, wine is a central part of Christian Mass. Thus implying that the Spirit hadn't been a part of this establishment since it's foundation)

And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
>>(i.e., we chose this)

And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast
>> (Duh! Sacrifice anyone?)

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
'Relax,' said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
but you can never leave!
>>(Once you commit, you can't leave. Like selling your soul and stuff)
-----------

Again, I don't actually believe this interpretation, but it can be supported by examples... makes you think a bit, huh?
Perhaps Don will come in and ban this song :)

joe
