MHR Bands With Classical Flavor

Bands or Artists like Yngswei Malmsteen, Stratovarious and At Vance(German Band) are very popular in Japan. Are they popular in Europe, UK or U.S. as in Japan? Or is it only unique phenomenon in Japan?

Thanks

RE: MHR Bands With Classical Flavor

That's right. Let me put it this way. In Japan when you say you like MHR and haven't heard about either Stratovarius, Fair Warning, Harem Scarem, or Dream Theater you might feel like an outcast. I still feel that way not having heard of the artists I mentioned except Fair Warning.

Yngswei Malmsteen is treated as superstar in Japan and one of BURRN magazine (Japanese Heavy Metal magazine) readers favorite.

At Vance is welcomed by wide variety of rock fans as heir of Symphonic Rock Superstars such as Yngswei and Stratovarius.

In Japan Heavy Metal sells a lot so the popularity in hard rock community counts a lot to album sales.

I hope this helps

Regards

Susumu

At Vance

I just want to add a few things about At Vance because they may still be unknown to MHR community. I briefly commented about this band while I am posting Survivor cover song topic last month.(They covered Eye Of The Tiger).

I bought their album just today and wow I didn't realize I get hooked by this genre of MHR (if this band is OK with me so would Stratovarius and Yngswei Malmsteen).

This band is formed by Olaf Lenk who started playing guitar when he heard Richie Blackmore when he was 10 and by the time he turns 15 Yngswei became his guitar hero.

Olaf Lenk made solo "Sunset Cruise " and made two Centers albums (Centers s/t and Fortuneteller).

The follwong is the track list of No Escape(Japanese Version).

Flying High
No Escape
No Speak
Die In Your Arms
All For One, One For All
Money Money Money(cover of Abba)
Vivaldi's Four Seasons-- Summer
Lost In Your Arms
Power and Glory
Seven Seas(not a cover of Steelhouse Lane)
Eye Of The Tiger(Japanese bonus track)
Shout(cover of Tears For Fears, bonus track)

Olaf Lenk(guitar)
Spoony(drum)
Rainald Konig(bass)
Ulli Muller(keyboard)
Oliver Hardmann(vocal)

I will post my review of this album in Miscellenious Review in a week.

Regards

Susumu

I highly doubt Stratovarius as good as they are could pull that off- entering the Japanese charts or not. Popularity in the Melodic/Hard Rock underground is one thing. Popularity among the Mass media, Major Labels, Booking Agents, Distributors, Radio and Record chains is a very different Animal.

Eric
