RE: kings x, good point Shawn!

KAOS

KX actually 'inspired' a whole movement. when they came out in 1988, right dead center of 'hair band hell', they were doing drop-d tuning, prog elements and beatles-ish harmonies. NO ONE was doing that at all at the time. i read countless articles with the popular rock bands of the day who were literally praising KX. now, flash up a few years to about 91or 92...think about how many bands use the drop-tuned, riffy, harmony approach. ALICE IN CHAINS has admitted to ripping off KX (and how could they deny it...they started out as a 'hair band')...STP, SOUNDGARDEN, and MANY others borrowed heavily from the KX style and got rich while KX stayed practically un-noticed commercially. i remember doug in RIP responding to a question about how he felt that so many bands were basically getting rich off of 'thier' sound...his response was "...it's nice to be appreciated, and it's an honor to be considered a positive influence on someone...but where's MY million dollars?"...haha

don't mean to ramble...i just truly LOVE this band!

My personal preference would be for the band to have stayed closer to their earlier "progressive" roots but I'm just glad their keeping up the good fight! I wonder what would have happened though if it wasn't for the proliferation of grunge - I remember in the early 1990s when Kings X were considered 'cutting edge' even by mainstream rock critics. I still have a "Rolling Stone" interview from early 1991 where they literally wax lyrical about the band! Cheers.KAOS FAN!

RE: kings x, yes but on decline!

surfpunk
thier shows are the best!!

KAOS
it was more a case of wanting to "simplify" thier approach. thier first 3 albums had these adventurous, almost prog elements. being on a major label, atlantic, was alot of pressure for a "hit single", so they began simplifying. that's one reason "ear candy" had so many short songs. i also remember reading an article with doug where he described the approach to making "ear candy" was "...fuck art...let's dance". which would explain the groove oriented style there.

in short, i don't thinkit was a case of "running out of ideas", but simply a case of doing something new for them. which, IMO, they did quite well...

cheers...

Dogman was also fine. Latterly though they seem to be running out of ideas - melodies are not as prominent and their is almost a world weariness to their sound. Perhaps they are jaded due to their lack of commercial recognition. I hope they keep battling though. cheers.kaos fan!

I actually posted a review here of one of the English gigs on the last tour but only one person responded so I thought they were on the decline on the scene today. A shame because they seemed TOTALLY relevant to me at that gig. Very cutting edge, but then, some people don't like that do they?
