Jazz/Classical

Hi all,

I thank sfk kurt for daring to ask about new country artists. I for one CAN'T STAND the old country and still have a hard time with a lot of the new stuff, but I do like Shania Twain and have heard some other country songs I like, such as "Amazed" by Lonestar, for which he should be sending royalty checks to Bryan Adams, by the way! So perhaps I will try some of the artists mentioned, such as Blackhawk, Sons of the Desert, Restless Heart, and Tim McGraw.

To continue the topic, I have also enjoyed the snippets of jazz I have heard lately and also like classical. I especially like the mellow, smooth jazz. Does anyone have any great recommendations in these genres of music?

RE: Jazz/Classical: a different perspective?

OK, I don´t want to see the board turn into a jazz (aaarggh!!!) or classical forum but it´s valid enough IMHO for a melodic rock fan to ask others of like minds IF they listen to stuff of that ilk and if so, what they listen to.

I don´t want to get too introspective about this but both jazz and classical music does have a bearing on melodic rock. Where would Richie Blackmore or Yngwie Malmsteen to name just two be without Bach?! You want a classical recommendation? Get Yngwie´s "Concerto suite for electric guitar and orchestra" and see how well rock guitar can go with classical music. That album is amazing.

I will be honest. I hate 99% of jazz but just about every rock drummer of note probably has been influenced (directly or indirectly) by jazz at some point. Truly great players are very familiar with the wild time signatures oft used in jazz and quite honestly jazz drum technique is usually considered the gold standard by musicians. Think Mike Portnoy, Neal Peart, Shane Gaalaas - those three names spring to mind when I think of rock drummers who show jazz influences in their playing.

RE: Jazz/Classical

Thanks, sfk! I definitely notice the jazz influence in some Toto songs, and I love it! A similar thing is happening with jazz, at least some jazz, to what is happening with country. It is having more of a rock undertone to it, and thus is more appealing to me. I was hoping someone here with eclectic tastes might be able to direct me to some of that stuff, since we have a similar "first love" of melodic rock. I'd be much more likely to enjoy it than blindly going to a jazz board. The genre of jazz is similarly diverse to that of rock. I suspect I'd not like most of it. But if it is not considered germane to ask the question, please forgive me and let's move on! Try my new topic instead! :)

(praise the lord and hallelujah ... and pass me a loaded gun).

The reason I pointed our friend DD Dave towards Miles Davis is because the man was a) a genius b) broke every farking rule in the book to date at the time and.. c) was a total lunatic and mold shattering precursor to many of our friends and icons today.

Call me a punter... (all together now.. PUNTER!) ...if only for elongating this non-topic thread. However, most of us who admire the likes of say Michael Schenker can appreciate Bach (Johann) as well. For one listen to both makes it obvious the lineage.

Country (pronounced "Cunt-Ray) on the other hand is a cesspool of half digested tripe and I simply could not agree more. Please pass the puke bucket... ta! "Fark" ... yes I say "fouk" the delta blues lineage with country..... it simply sucks the business end of a mop in my humble opinion and deserves no further comment. Besides... I am thoroughly convinced that Garth Brooks is nothing more than a yodeling thumb with a hat.

I too had teachers like yours. Erectile dysfuncional twits who insisted that musical progression stopped in 1962 and our like were simply the unwashed and seminally retarded who did not deserve their bad breath on our necks during their solfege classes.

However.... ( he said adjusting his specs and farting loudly from the podium)... we must not fall into the same trap as those balding, nostrel mining professors who treated our passions and ourselves so horridly in the past. For if we do dear friends... we are no better than they.

BUT... ya' STILL should take it to another board, mate!

While I was attending music college, the teachers would only teach jazz...why? they said it was the life blood of all music...??...BOLLOCKS
One of the teachers had never even taken the time to listen to rock in any form, if he heard a guitar with a bit of crunch he would leave the room (pretty cool if you wanted rid of them). This is the mentallity of people who PLAY jazz (well some of them, I can't speak for them all) although another guy was quite taken by Racer X, he couldn't believe the standard of playing (he said the songs were shite...git).

I have to agree with Carl and the Stimp, this board is clearly directed towards Melodic and AOR, this I feel could quite easily incorporate a lot of the new country acts today, I quite like the way they put melodies together, but I can't see the need for all that voice wobbling shit. So if you want to learn more aboput Kenny G and his lot, then jizz.com...sorry jazz.com is for you (the first one is another story).
