RE: David Coverdale - not impressed!

I purchased the new David Coverdale album yesterday, and I think it's the best thing he's done in years. He's doing what he wants to do. He's in 50's, and the days of 1987 are gone, he can deal with it, so why can't other people?. It's good to hear him sing again-qv "Don't Cry" or "Midnight Blue". And he can still let rip as is proven by "Slave" or the rollicking "Don't lie to me". I also believe that the utterly tender "Wherever you may go" features one of his best ever performances.
If anyone really believes that TEN have now stolen Coverdale's thunder, it can't have been worth stealing in the first place.

Yesterday Man!

Coverdale has loong since been past his sell by date. Aside from 1987, Burn and Come Taste The Band there's really nothing he's done to impress me and even with those albums the key to their success was the talented people around Coverdale ie. Glenn Hughes and John Sykes etc. I can't for the life of me see why people don't see him as the charlatan he so obviously is. Read between the lines in the Classic Rock interview to see what I mean.

On record he might just get away with it. He could 'airbrush' the cracked notes along with the lines on his face (like he did with the 'Slip of the Tongue' photos.! Remember?) But live he just can't stop himself from screaming and he just can't do it anymore. I just wish he'd come out from under his own ego and give Glenn Hughes a shot at the perfect audience for Glenn by taking him out on tour (If he really must put us, er...you actually coz I won't be going, through one.)

Hey, is that the sound of shit hitting a fan????

With his voice still sounding as glorious as ever.
Although I love the 1987 album I prefer something older - check out his stormin version of Smoke on the Water at the California Jam or if ya wanna rock BUUUURRRNNN is awesome.

Restless Heart was good except for a few similarly paced ballads so I await to see what the snake has waitin for me. Then i can take the Cd baby and slide it in right to the top!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

RE: David Coverdale - not impressed!

I believe Kaos Fan was simply saying that Ten and Newman are as close to the classic Whitesnake sound as we have today. I have to agree. Ten plays the same type of powerful melodic rock that Coverdale popularized in the late 80's (and has forgotten ever since). While Ten may not be the "Rolls Royce" that Whitesnake was in 1987, they certainly have proven that they can deliver a worthwhile performance rather consistently, something DC has not been able to do. Remember, two or three good albums out of about 15 is not consistent. I love David Coverdale/Whitesnake, but I can't help wonder what great music we would have gotten if Coverdale could have held it together with John Sykes a bit longer.

Robert

But I'm afraid to say just like the last album "Restless Heart" it didn't do much for me. In fact while I'm at it may i just suggest that Cov has lost his vitality and we're all better off following the maybe less well known but more productive batch of bands in the melodic rock scene like Danger Danger, Ten and Heartland. Whitesnake at their peak were stupendous but that was a good decade ago. Ten are currently the closest thing to "classic Whitesnake" and Newman off the Escape label also has the same classic Whitesnake feel! Cheers.KAOS FAN!

RE: David Coverdale - Into the Light anybody heard

Now let me start by saying Whitesnake were my favourite band of all time, in fact they still are in a nostalgic kind of way. I have followed old Cov and his ever changing band of merry men from the beginning and was one of those anoraks who used to follow the band round the country to nearly every gig. I've even met the suave old bastard. Yeah, there was a time when Coverdale could have recorded himself going to the toilet and I would have convinced myself (and others) that it was the album of the year. Not anymore I'm afraid. I want to like 'Into The Light', I really really do but I just can't get it to light my fire. There are a couple of good moments that hark back to the Cov/Page era ('Midnight Blue' and 'Love is Blind') and the reworking of 'Too Many Tears' from the last Whitesnake album is very cool indeed but overall it is a bland affair. The swansong of a true rock legend? Probably. I can't see Cov bouncing back onto the scene if this tired old blues routine is all he can come up with and he's simply to old for the shit that made him his fortunes. Sorry Dave, I think it could be time to take up Golf!

Gav

PS I'll still go and see him about fifty times if he tours!!!!!!!
