Helloween?

I have always assumed that Helloween was to heavy for my tastes (although I do prefer the "harder" side of melodic rock). I recently heard the song "Hey Lord" and thought it was awesome! Could anyone give their opinions as to which Helloween albums are the best (and most melodic)? Thanks in advance!

RE: HELLOWEEN - EDGUY!must for Dan!

Great to see a virtual across the board recognition of the talents of the great Helloween. Incidentally, Dan if you like Helloween I'm sure you'll love a band called Edguy from Germany. They purvey a sound similar to Keepers-era Helloween which was awesomely melodic. Great singing, very fine guitar playing, orchestral like arrangements abound. Both Edguy's "Theater of Salvation" and "Vain Glory Opera" are very distinctive releases from the time-honoured Helloween tradition!
Cheers.KAOS FAN.

Remember, Dan said he rated the track "Hey Lord", you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a track in any way similar ie production and feel on the Keepers albums to Hey Lord. I agree they are timeless slices of power metal, think you forgot to mention Walls Of Jericho there too, but Andi has brought a change to the sound IMO and hence I could only recommend the later material.

Cheers and beers (oh to hell with it, and crack)

Benno

RE: HELLOWEEN

Hi Dan,

Quite a coincidence that you brought up this topic...as I have been listening to Helloween all day!

I will try my best to list Helloween's discography (full length albums only) and give you an idea of which ones you might prefer:

Walls of Jericho (1985) - Typical power metal, lots of very high pitched (and not so good) vocals by Kai Hansen. Not a bad album, but not for you, if you are an AOR fan.

Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1 (1987) - Their first album with superstar singer Michael Kiske, and one of the most influential power metal albums of all time. This one is quite melodic but not it is not hard rock

Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2 (1988) - This one is even better than the last one, mainly because Michael Weikath began writing more of the songs. This is "catchier" than the previous one, and if you buy only one of Keeper-era cds, get this one.

Pink Bubbles Go Ape (1990) - This is where Helloween became really hard rock-ish. Many Helloween fans hated this album but I personally think it's great. If you like melodic hard rock you MUST get this one!! Plenty of catchy tunes in here

Chameleon (1993) - This is an excellent album and shows just how diverse this band is. Michael Weikath really establishes himself as an excellent songwriter in this album. Full of Melodic Hard Rock tunes, this might be their best album if you like hard rock

Master of the Rings (1995) - This is the first album with singer Andi Deris (who by the way is an excellent frontman!) and is definitely heavier than the previous album, but does not lose ANY of the melody. This is VERY melodic power metal with hard rock influences

Time of the Oath (1997) - This one is similar to the previous one but heavier and darker. This is for fans of power metal, but there are some songs in here which will appeal to fans of "soft" music like us

Better than Raw (1999) - Mixed opinions on this one. I personally love it to death but I must admit it is quite heavy. There is still plenty of melody in here and there are a few songs in here which qualify as all time great heavy metal songs. "Laudate Dominum" is about the catchiest power metal song I have heard in years. Also, "Hey Lord" is on this album. Try listening to some sound samples first as it is quite heavy (but a great album nonetheless)

So in conclusion Dan, for you, I would recommend the albums in this order:

1. Chameleon
2. Pink Bubbles Go Ape
3. Master of the Rings
4. Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2
5. Better than Raw
6. Time of the Oath
7. Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1
8. Walls of Jericho

Always glad to see another Helloween fan!

Cheers

Vince

Dan wrote:
-------------------------------
I have always assumed that Helloween was to heavy for my tastes (although I do prefer the "harder" side of melodic rock). I mean i like andris and the RAW album and all, but to put it above the KEEPERS PART 2 is just absurd! I mean , that is a staple in everyone's collection! Saying you like raw over keeper 2 is like someone picking x factor by maiden over powerslave! I like the new helloween, but it still doesnt compare to the original. Yes they are harder now, which IS cool. But i think the old helloween had a certain elemant that left them above the rest with their QUEEN like harmonies and sense of humor. Trust me dan, get KEEPERS PART 2 and CHAMELON. Two very awesome albums. When you hear I WANT OUT, You will agree with ME.

ADIOS
JASON

RE: Helloween?Dave's right!Superb!

To Dan and others, I say get pretty much anything by Helloween. You can't get more melodic than this band even on their heavier material. The only release that is "iffy" would be "Metal Jukebox" which is an album of covers material. As to Dave's assertion about the guitarists being better than Maiden's I agree totally(though I love Maiden). Some of the twin guitar interludes recall Thin Lizzy at their very best.
Fave albums - earlier days 1988s melodically defining masterpiece "Keeper of the Seven Keys" Part 2.
Latterly, the fantastic "Better than Raw" album
P.S new album due very shortly titled "The Dark Saga".
RE: Helloween?

To me the most melodic CD's by Helloween is Chameleon & Pink
Bubbles Go Ape these are generally not well liked by Helloween Fans who
prefer the harder side and not so varied music as on these two CD's.
The Time of The Oath,Master of The Rings,Better Than Raw are very good
with Raw being the heaviest. Their earlier CD's Keepers of the 7 keys Part
I & II are also very good.

Also try the group Gamma Ray which have a new double digipak collection
with all there best songs rerecorded for like $16 bucks Its a great package.

I always thought Helloweens 2 lead guitarists are way above the pack, to me much better than Iron Maiden's guitarists.

Helloween rock!

My personal fav's have been since Andi Deris jumped aboard as the lead singer. I have Lord of the Rings, Time Of The Oath and their most recent, Better Than Raw off which the song you mentioned comes from. Fantastic mix of power and hard rock. They say the newer stuff is very similar to Pink Cream 69's later stuff with Andi on vox (tho I don't hear it). Get Better Than Raw - its probably the best of his era, and perhaps ever, tho there can be some contention over which incarnation of the band is best (similar to Van Roth/Hagar discussions). Other standout tracks on the album are the gritty "Push", powerful "Falling Higher", tough-as-nails "Don't Spit On My Mind" and the thunderous "A Handful Of Pain" (my favourite track). You'll dig it, trust me.

BTW, Time Of The Oath comes a very close second, you must listen to that one as well - "Before The War" kicks my arse every time.

Cheers and beers

Benno
