I think a lot of people just want
every album to sound like Mood Swings and they are pissed off because it never happened so they slag off the later releases including the excellent Rubber album.
I bet the same people who moan about this would also claim if the band had done another Mood Swings, that they have nothing new to offer and are just repeating themselves.

Mood Swings you up!

Harem Scarem seem to have - and I'm by no means an expert and only a casual fan - a history of doing what they want to do. Mood Swings was the one album that everyone here agrees on, at least they seem to as the only argument it sparks is how good it actually is. Some say excellent, others disagree and say its fucking unbelievable, you get my drift.

I was put onto Mood Swings here at this board a long while back and still spin the disc to this day. But I then decided to take the journey through their studio catalogue - my advice is to not do this! I have since traded the lot away and just held onto two, the afore mentioned, and Karma Cleansing. KC doesn't really hold a candle to MS but its a pretty good album on its own.

The self titled debut sucks in my opinion, very light on and passionless and bland production, MS came second, then the third, a venture into grunge also didn't strike any harmony with me, then comes Karma Cleansing which had a sister-release but the title escapes me (it had a similar track listing but dropped a couple and added a couple), then Big Bang Theory which I played once and traded ASAP, and then Rubber. I'd given up by Rubber.

There's a load of live, b-side and greatest hits discs running around as well but I ain't fan enough to go there. So get Mood Swings, but be wary of what else you decide to go for. Go for sound bytes where you can.

Cheers and beers

Benno

RE: Alex and Susumu...

Hi guys,

Here's the bottom line: I have an extra (used) copy of the s/t HS CD (no, it's not a CD-R). I'd be willing to fire it off to either one of you for free (no strings attached) just because I feel that strongly that this band needs to be heard. I picked it up for a pretty good price (HS is quite readily available in Canada), and people from this board have been extremely generous to me, so I'm happy to share and help out wherever I can as well. I have a feeling that both of you would love this album. Susumu, based on your preferred picks from "Mood Swings," I'd say that you'd especially love it, as you've chosen the lighter, more AOR tracks as your favorites. Those tracks are basically what the entire s/t album is like! Anyways, my only problem right now is to figure out which one to send it to. Let's put it this way: Whichever one of you emails me your mailing address first can have it. Does that sound fair? I hope so, 'cuz I don't wanna start any feuding or hard feelings or anything. The race is on... Good luck to both of you, and may the best MHR fan win...
Don

RE: HAREM SCAREM

Hey Alex,

Watch it! Asking someone to "get me a CD of the band" isn't very good business.....Harem Scarem, as Don rightly pointed out, are one of the undisputed kings of AOR....if you don't have them, you're missing out. However, their output varies wildly, some of the later albums such as Big Bang Theory are not AOR, despite what anyone may tell you. You may like the latter albums or the Rubber albums, Im not trying to persuade you to be narrow minded because they do deserve a listen, but dont expect any monster AOR hooks and catchy choruses.

As far as AOR goes, I'll second the opinions you have heard. Get the self-titled debut first, then the second one. WIthout going into an argument about which is better, it's a better transition to hear the first and then the second. Both outstanding blind buys.

If you want to take a listen on the old Napster, get the following songs....an I mean as tastes before you buy, so you know what you're getting into. People who are against Napster may say that it's not right, but I do it all the time that way. Like the new Rafa Martin ( I just tarcked down the *only* copy sold in all of Mexico City a few days ago): I heard a bunch of songs, then went out and bought the CD. I wanted the whole packaged deal with sterling sound.

Anyway, get:

From the debut: With a Little Love, Slowly Slipping Away (acoustic), Distant Memory, Hard to Love.
From Mood Swings: Stranger Than Love, Saviors Never Cry, Sentimental Blvd.
From Karma Cleansing/Believe: Rain, Die Off Hard.

That should be a good introduction. Trust wise Jack.

Cheers,
J.

HS's first two albums are simply essential to any AOR/melodic hard rock collection. To not own them would be the equivalent of loving golf and not being aware of who Tiger Woods is, or a hockey fan who's unfamiliar with Bobby Orr or Wayne Gretzky. I honestly don't think I'm exaggerating here. Over hte past three years, I have witnessed numerous people who have "discovered" this band as a result of this board. Few, if any, have been disappointed. As for how to get ahold of these two albums, email me. I think I can help. Take care.
Don
