They are both great cd's and the band are in a much higher class than the likes of Attraction, Shanghai, Brian McDonald etc etc.
More professional sounding for starters and song writing quality and musical ability are world class. I personally don't think there are any fillers on the second cd at all but maybe I am biased because I love Scott Gorham.

The first CD is a highly polished piece of AOR/MHR. The second CD lacks the polish and the songs are more guitar riff based (more MHR). There is also some filler on the second one.

Comparing the two CDs is tough, since they don't sound that much alike.

Andrew on the first time round for _Nothing's Real_ posted sound bytes for the three best songs. Maybe with some arm twisting he will do it again. I bought the Japanese version of _NR_ on the strength of those three songs, but was disappointed with the drop off in quality in the remaining songs. The quality of _NR_ did not justify the higher Japanese price. Knowing now what I know, I would have waited to pick up the Euro version.

The 2nd CD is a little too raw. "New" vocalist Solli (ex-Sons of Angels, Psycho Motel) sounds at times as if he may blow an O-ring trying to reach high notes! Plus, bassist/keyboardist Leif Johanssen seems to have forgotten to plug his ivories in (I can't really hear too many keys in the mix), so there doesn't seem to be as much gloss to the sound as on the 1st disc. I also don't think the songs stand up as well.
This having been said, Gorham still plays as skillfully as ever and Mike Sturgis shows why he is one of the most in-demand drummers in rock/pop today.
All in all, the disc is an above average slice of hard rock (with grunge-y tendencies at times), but not the great AOR/MHR of "Salute". I hope that they try to get Tommy LaVerdi back into the fold, or at least recruit someone else of his vocal caliber, if they choose to record again. Time will tell....

Regards,

Chris D.
