I Didn't Know Neil Schon was a Member of Santana

Until a few months ago when I bought Best of Santana. And also surprised Santana tried MHR during late 70s and early 80s in All I Ever Wanted(wow it sounds like Kiss), and Winning(a pure Journey but not surprising 1981 was the year of Journey(Escape)).

As a guitarist some posters mentioned him as the most underrated guitarist.

If you know Santana tell us if Carlos's approach during that era successful?

Thanks

According to the info attached to the Best of Santana CD, it was produced by Keith Olsen. The track from Marathon "All I Ever Wanted " is Kiss-styled rock with a bit of Santana-mix.

Regards

Susumu

RE: I Didn't Know Neil Schon was a Member of Santa

Yeah, Neal Schon and Greg Rolie were in the original Santana lineup who played at Woodstock. Probably the most successful incarnation of Santana, aside from his recent grammy winning album. This is when they had the huge hits like "Evil Ways", "Oye Como Va", and "Black Magic Woman". I do remember that song "Winning" from the 80's, and you were right, it was a serious Journey ripoff. But since Journey never would have existed without Santana, that's at least partially justified.

I was astounded by the reactions of STYX and NR topics. (I could not reach here because of technical trouble when Survivor reunion caused uproar) I hope those fans like this board and visit here regularly.

Talking of Santana, the band had undergone trememdous number of member shift and Neal was in the band around 70 to 71. Neal left the band with Gregg Rolie and formed Journey.

Santana's MHR approach refers to Marathon Man album in 1979 produced by Keith Olsen (Isn't he famous for Kiss works?). All I Ever Wanted is the track from Marathon Man also in Best of Santana compilation. It sounds a lot like Kiss. And hit single Winning (Journey-style rock ballad) in 1981 is also in this compilation.

According to liner notes of another compilation Santana tried disco and pop rock approach during that era and produced some hits.

I think Winning was the message to Neal which became much more popular at that time. Ironically Carlos finally did!

Thanks Kevin!

Regards

Susumu
