I do have to say though that I think several people who are dismissing this 'new breed' of bands are just simply missing out.Look back on ICON etc. fondly but leave it where it is. Albums like 'Night of the Crime' and 'Mood Swings' pretty much set the bench mark for 80's style AOR and few bands since come close. I would simply rather listen to something more relevant in 2000 than something trying to recreate the sound of 1986.

As for Ten being the saviours of Rock well I am in the minority here as I really can't see what the fuss is about. I have heard all their albums apart from the new one ( although 2 tracks I have heard were quite good ) and while I understand they
are popular there is just something missing for me. I feel very left out honest.
I have seen them live at all the Gods shows and even then I have not been blown away like most people are. Maybe I am missing something but I believe there is
enough great music out there to keep everyone happy so I don't need to have
a Ten cd in my collection.

Well, I'm not a huge Ten fan but I do like the Spellbound and s/t cds. Spellbound was the first one to really convert me though--a bit harder but some of their best songs yet. I'll still say though that the best work Ten has ever done was the Bob Catley "The Tower" cd--mix in the best writing Gary Hughes had done, with a lot of Magnum influence and Catley's wonderful vocals.

I think also if you listen to Ten's Drummer who is pretty good ( bad sound on all the albums though ) and then listen to Tsar's drummer you maight want to think again about who is the better musician.
I am very pleased for Mark Ashton to get the success with Ten and with the other
bands on his label. I know Mark has put a lot of time, effort and money into his
work because it is something he truly believes in. Even when he was putting out the Boulevard fanzine 10 years ago he was a huge fan of AOR and hard rock and
wanted to get music he loved across to a wider audience. That's the main problem with these new bands...both the vocals and musicianship are far inferior to any of the "clone" AOR bands...

I actually listened to the Mars Electric and Everclear albums at a store recently....all I can say is that AOR fans should avoid these sorts of bands...I mean the first song on the Mars Electric is good but then after that the album gets shot down faster than a kamikaze pilot...

You will not be missing out on anything, you'll save your hard-earned $17 and you can buy the new TEN album with the money you were going to waste on that other crap

Is it any wonder that Portrait are considered failures within the genre....

Where are you now John kalodner...Ratt sells less than Ten although they have the major promotion, studio budget, and are signed to a major label....

I personally prefer ANY of the so called "clone" AOR bands over this new rubbish that people are calling "the new wave of melodic rock"

At least the clone bands have great musicianship....give me paint by the numbers AOR anyday!

The funny thing is, some people are claiming that the new AOR bands have nothing new to offer, whilst bands like Mars electric and Everclear are cheap imitations of each other.

I think I'll go back and listen to my Frontline "Right Attitude" cd....infinitely better than any of this "new" rubbish.

Oh, and on another subject, I've just discovered the FULL extent of Max Martin's work. Besides the familiar work with Dr Alban, Britney, Backstreet Boys, Five, 'N SYNC etc (the latter with whom Jean Beauvoir has also written for) the guy has even penned songs with Bryan Adams and, amongst MANY other pop rock acts, had a major contribution to make to an album by a Swedish guy called Herbie. I never did get hold of the album at the time but saw him play a storming set on the same bill as Joey Tempest back in 95 at the Stockholm Water Festival. A song called 'Right Type Of Mood', the single, sticks in my head to this day. This album appears to have been delayed for months by Epic. Remember, the 'Friends Forever' single was released last year? Indeed, I thought the album had been shelved, but looks like getting a UK release in November. Is it out in Europe already though?
