ARRIVAL!!!

hi there,
i'm getting the whole new Journey stuff from napster right now and i got to tell you that i LOVE all the songs so far. Higher place is Be Good to your Self no.2! And my fav ballad is Lifetime of Dreams. Hard to choose one, they are all so beautiful.
All i can say is WOW, "Remember me" was sooo good but... this is fantastic! Better than i expected. Pure 80's Journey! Kalodner did a great job, they're gonna hit #1!
They say Steve Augeri sounds a lot like Steve Perry...so what? He sings great! The rythm section is groovy and heavy, as one! Neal Schon is THE MAN, and he's back again!
Welcome back,

We might not get the AOR we crave, but as far as entertainment value goes....you wouldn't be able to beat it with a stick.

I'd find it unbelievably funny if Bon Jovi announced they're leaving their instruments behind, and became a "boy band" of sorts that only sings and dances. They'd do a boy band thing, but the "boys" in question would be 40+ years old. Live in concert they'd do these elaborate dance numbers with chairs & shit like N Sync & Backstreet boys, waving their hands and hips around while having a band of musicians to the side playing the music. And they'd wear bright yellow costumes and stuff, all of them dressed up the same as the teeny bopper idols, with lots of rings on their fingers and chains around their necks.

Man, I would love that more than anything BJ can possibly do in the future.

Cheers,
Jack.

But the proper formula should be - 1st single rocker, 2nd single
ballad.

I agree...the other problem though is that getting modern US rock radio to play an AOR anthem rocker is pretty much nil to none unless you have a HUGE amount of backing which, to be perfectly honest, neither Journey nor Dep Lep are going to get. Joe Elliot said it best on the Dep Lappard storytellers episode where he said the only market for a melodic rock band in the US these days was in the ballads. Release a rocker and ya won't get airplay --> low sales.....or....release the hit ballad --> good sales, but you get stereotyped as a "ballad band". Catch 22 if ya ask me.

Kevin

RE: ARRIVAL!!!

So both are being released at the same time?

The problem with releasing a ballad first is that it reminds people of the Journey of old. They remember Journey as balladmeisters, an in turn that brings up the image that they are an old band that used to do schmaltzy ballads in the 80s. Definitely not good for the image. Remember, that is the conception the general public has about Journey. Jounrey = ballads = 80s = cheesy & old.

If, on the other hand, Journey stormed in with something fresh and exciting like a melodic & anthemic rocker, it will show the public a new side to them than what they remembered. Like a fresh gust of air. They will think Journey have reinvented themselves and have come along with something new. It's simply a more energetic way of presenting yourself. Anthemic summertime songs grab people's attention moe than ballads, because ballads have been done to death by everyone. Maybe because they're easier to write....I remember Phil Collen from Def leppard saying that it's far easier to write a great love song than a song where it sounds like you're kicking ass. And it's true.

Maybe they've done anthems like that before, but the people don't know them, so this is the opportunity to repackage the band and say: This is what we're doing now, not just a re-tread of ballads. People tend to think of Journey along the lines of the schlop Michael Bolton dishes out because all they've heard are Open Arms and the like...So releasing another one of this is like "Oh, it's them again".

The ballads could always have a chance as a second single. But the proper formula should be - 1st single rocker, 2nd single ballad.

Cheers,
Jack.
