YES's Tales From Topographic Oceans

I just found this CD in used CD store and surprised it costs about $26 (boy it is almost same as new release). What makes this YES album so special?

Thanks

They are one of the reasons i picked up a guitar (them and Van Halen)...and I don't like everything Swedish, Ulrikakaka would fill a gap though.

See you Saturday

Tony

It is a return to the style of "Fountians Of Light" and will please most fans. I agree... "Talk" is forgotten by many people and is a good album. I liked it more than "Union" or "Big Generator". The Peter Max cover was a nice touch too.

Eric

Great production and less commercial songs using a lot of unusual sounds. Probably more of a Trevor Rabin solo album than Yes though.
Oh, and Eric, I was meaning to ask you how the new Starcastle album was coming along, and how does it compare to the first 3 style-wise?
And Tony, I can't believe you like Yes! They're not even Swedish!
Take care,

Phil

Like most AOR- Prog has gone underground, and Yes is the Prog equivilant to Journey in terms of popularity, so they will sell x amount of CD's no matter what.

That said- "The Ladder" is the band's best in many years.
Eric

It is true 90125 is a great album. But it is Big Generator I still like listening even today as an album. It is no wonder BURRN gave outstanding rating of 99. But to die-hard Yes fans this was their identity crisis. 90125 and BG became too palpable and became too popular ironically
they are tormented by them.

Their recent album Ladder is the result of their struggle to get back their original banner. I heard this CD only through listening device but I felt old Yes is finally back with confidence.

How about Ladder? Was it successful?

Regards

Susumu

Big Generator was good, but I actually preferred "Union" to that one, and any album they've put out since then. I would probably be considered an outcast by most Yes fans because of this preference. Its good good good stuff in my opinion

A ground breaking album. "Big Generator" failed to capture my imagination, as it lacked focus. The addition of real Brass brought into a couple songs left me cold too.

Eric

I like both albums a lot and part of Owner Of A Lonely Heart is used in Nissan car's TV commercial clip now in Japan.

How Yes fan felt about both albums?

Regards

Susumu

It's considered the many Fans to be boring and rather long winded. The double album was not well recieved at the time of it's release, and to this day is a tough listen unless you are a Fan.

Eric

It is quite a rare CD (hence the price). If you want to hear Yes at thier best, then I suggest you check out Going For The One, Close To The Edge or for the ultimate LIVE album, Yesshows.
Live and learn.
Tony
