Favorite "live" albums

Just curious on everybody's favorite live albums. In my opinion, most live albums are a waste of money, but every once in a while one comes out that really kicks some major ass. Here are mine:

1. Tesla-Five Man Acoustical Jam: Tesla kind of put this whole acoustic/unplugged thing on the map with this album. Well, they definately proved they were for real and not just a product of some slick production.

2. Yngwie Malmsteen-Live in Leningrad: Joe Lynn Turner's tremendous vocals stand out on this great live album. Some of the solo's are a little "out-of-control", but you kind of expect that from the maestro. One thing that amazed me was that Joe's versions of Queen in Love, Liar, and You Don't Remember are so much better than the originals by Mark Boals it is just scary.

3. Cinderella-Live: This is the live version that the band sold at concerts in 1999. I like it much better than the Live at the Key Club album. It is very raw and sounds exactly like you are standing in the crowd.

4. Whitesnake-Starkers in Tokyo: Another unplugged album, but an exceptional one as well. Coverdale and Vandenburg prove that they can deliver under any circumstances.

5. Queensryche-Operation Livecrime: A phenomenal live performance of one of the greatest concept albums of all time.

oh, by the way....

I forgot to mention this before....

The thing that makes a live album great is when it sounds and "feels" like it's really live and you are there almost. A lot of so called "live" albums are anything but by the time they make it to the retail racks..

The obvious example would be Ozzy Osbourne's tribute to Randy Rhoads album. I love the album, mostly because of Randy's playing, but it isn't a live album by any means. Every note of Ozzy's vocals on that album was recorded in a studio.
How do I know this? Because I used to have a bootleg of the very same show in it's original form, and Ozzy's voice was kinda rough, some lyrics forgotten, some sang out of order, etc. All of which mysteriously vanished 7 years later when the album was finally released.

Black Sabbath's Live Evil was much the same. Ronnie James Dio sings great live in my opinion, but apparently not in his. In fact, the reason Sabbath II split up, according to Tony Iommi at the time, was that Dio was "trying to make Live Evil sound like fucking Barry Manilow". An exaggeration? Perhaps, but if you ever heard a boot of Sabbath w/Dio live, you would have to agree that the vocals on Live Evil are a bit suspicious.

My point is that a great live album is just that. It's great because it's actually LIVE, catching the band at what they do best. Save the overdubs for the studio albums, and don't throw a studio song on to the album, mix some crowd sounds in and try to bullshit the fans (i.e. about half of KISS Alive II - and no I don't mean side 4- and Van Hagar's cover of "Won't Get Fooled Again" on the RHRN "live" album. Yes it IS a studio recording, trust me.)

RE: Favorite "live" albums

I would have to agree on the Tesla albumbeing great. I wasn't even a Tesla fan at the time, and still don't have any of their other CD's but I love this album anyway. However I wouldn't give them all the credit for launching the "Unplugged" thing. Paul McCartney did one before that, and from the first song on the Tesla CD, it's clear they were inspired by the Grateful Dead, who did acoustic sets throughout their career, releasing an "unplugged" album called "Reckoning" in the early 80's.

Now as for my favorite live albums......

The Who Live at Leeds : Even in it's original vinyl form it was one of the greatest live albums ever made. Now, digitally restored and twice as long as it used to be, you simply can't find better. While the Beatles were breaking up, the Stones were changing gears with a new guitarist, and Zeppelin was just barely getting off the ground, Roger, Pete, John, and Moon the Loon took over and between from 1969 - 1972 it was almost impossible to beat these guys. This album was recorded right in the middle of that time. There's also a 2 CD set from the same period from their Isle of Wight show, which features them performing Tommy in it's entirety. It's also a great performance, but "Leeds" wins on basis of sound quality.

Sex Pistols Live at Chelmsford Top Security Prison : Sound quality is definitely NOT the main selling point here, but just the whole idea of the most notorious punk band in the world playing live before a crowd of violent criminals makes this an album well worth having. You'll laugh your ass off as Johnny Rotten talks to the crowd... "You're all stupid you got caught! Do your homework next time". Unbelievably, nobody was killed......
