TOP TEN MELODIC ROCK/METAL GUITARISTS

Just for fun I'm putting up my faves. What do the rest of you guys think?
1.KENNY KAOS - You wonder where I get my name from. This guy should be much bigger. Plays for Pokerface and The Distance with Chris Ousey from Heartland. Excellent AOR guitarist.
2. ADRIAN SMITH - My favourite guitarist from the mighty Iron Maiden.
3.NEAL SCHON - JOURNEY, HSAS, HARDLINE, early SANTANA. Excellent melodic player, can shred when he wants too.
4.STEVE MORRIS - HEARTLAND- Complements the great voice of Chris Ousey.
5. JEFF WATERS - ANNIHILATOR- A great melodic speed metal player. Check out the classical instrumental passages on all their albums.
6. TOM SCHOLZ - BOSTON - A real innovator.
7. CHRIS CAFFERY - SAVATAGE - Why aren't these guys bigger? They deserve to be.
8. RICK NIELSEN - CHEAP TRICK - The guy looks strange but boy can he pull off some brilliant hooks.
9. JOHN PETRUCCI - DREAM THEATER - Classically trained and it shows.
10.KAI HANSEN - HELLOWEEN/GAMMA RAY - Euro melodic metal wouldn't be the same without him. Even without Hansen though I still prefer Helloween! New Helloween album soon.

And for those of you who bash David Lee Roth, without him Eddie would have never been inspired to do better. Sammy didn't push Ed and that is why Van Hagar riffs became recycled to some extent.

RE: Why the exclusion of Eddie Van Halen?

Pete,

Good Point. I tend to agree with you, Ed has definitely remain a one style type of guy.

But Ask yourself this. If Eddie didn't come along, we wouldn't have your Steve Lukathers, John Petruccis, or Reb Beachs. Sure, they'd be around....but the doors that Eddie opened for them, would still be closed.

Really...I mean, shit....Eddie paved the way for every AOR/melodicrock guitarist out there. If he hadn't come along, I firmly believe rock guitar would have taken 5-10 more years to evolve to the point it is today. He literally and singlehandedly took everyone for a 10 year jump in 1978.

Now having said that, if the list was best AOR/Melodicrock guitarist that isn't a schmuck. Eddie wouldn't be on that list. We all know the dumb mistakes hes made in the past and the real collosal one he's about to make. But getting on to his diversity.... I think one of the main reasons why Eddie has never 'explored' other musical avenues is two fold.

1) When, at the age of 28, you become the single most influential guitarist in the world....you tend to grow a big head. Eddie probably didn't think he needed to do anything other than play the way he has for years. Sorta the ACDC philosophy. "Hey, it's worked for the past 20 years!!"

*** Side note, having said that -- if you *really* listen to some of Eddie's playing, you'll hear all sorts of different influences cropping up here and there. Listen to the solo from when it's love....with the exception of the fact that its a humbucker through a marshall, you could easily mistake that solo for a clapton solo.

2) I think people really tried to prevent him from branching out. He had all sortsa fights with Roth over him playing Keys in the band.

Regardless, Eddie has literally inspired 3 generations of guitarists. More than anyone that has ever played the instrument. If that doesn't qualify him for this list, I cant tell you what would.

-Frank

RE: TOP TEN guitarists: the problem is...

..."top" in which respect? ´Cause for sure some of the greatest songwriters of the genre are not soloists in the same technical league of Yngwie and co. - yet many technically awesome players wouldn´t know a decent riff if it leaped out of the flight case dressed up as a gnome and screamed Hey, dude, classic rock song here...

I favour brilliant soloists that can write great songs - with a couple of exceptions...

...and I reserve the right to change my mind tomorrow!!!

1. Yngwie J. Malmsteen. No argument about his position in my poll. I simply believe he is the best lead guitarist in the world and song-for-song is the most consistantly good songwriter I can think of. Sadly he has an ego to match but then again when you´re that good, perhaps you´re entitled to it!
2. George Bellas. One of the best of the new generation - writes a mean tune too. John Q, shame on you for missing him off your list...! Only kidding!
3. Richie Blackmore. Moody and often unpredictable, originator of neoclassical metal. On form few can equal him for style, technique, taste and feeling. Off form...you don´t want to know!!!
4. Ronnie Montrose. Have I missed something, or did everyone else forget the best player from the US of A during the 70´s? Get out Montrose and Gamma 2 NOW and see why he should be everyone´s top ten... can´t wait for Gamma 4.
5. Tony Iommi. Master of the classic riff. Underrated lead player too.
6. Chris Impelliteri. Fastest guitarist on the power metal circuit. Great harmonics and writes (and rewrites!) a mean riff.
7. Rob Johnson. A controversial choice perhaps, in light of those I´ve left bubbling under (Sykes, Norum, V. Burns): but he has phenomenal technique and in Magnitude 9, demonstrates challenging songwriting skills. I await the next Mag 9 album with interest.
8. George Lynch pre-1997. Then, one of the few non-European guitarists that didn´t just develop into a speed freak post-Yngwie without understanding the meaning of the word "melody". Now, a shadow of his former life...
9. Vivian Campbell. Outstanding with Dio. Sublime with Shadow King. Lost with Riverdogs and wasted with Leppard...
10. Gary Moore. Before he got those ol´blooze, probably the fastest and most technically "together" of the old generation of metal guitarists.

Andy Timmons - tasty rocker and really cool to boot!
10. Me

I would have easily added Petrucci to this list, but I feel he doesn't deserve to be on a melodic rock list....he's more of a progressive metal. But hey, if you dont agree with me....add petrucci up there and take off Vito, for inactivity!

Just to satisfy my curiosity, Nicky who does Slav Simanic play for and what's his style, guitar tone etc. Is he a Croat or a Serb judging by the name? He's the only guitarist in all the lists that I don't know. Cheers in advance. KAOS FAN....
