Tommy Shaw 'Ambition' CD. Bootleg or legit?

Saw a "new" copy of Tommy Shaw's 'Ambition' on CD that's turned up in a respectable record store. A bit expensive, as befits US imports. Was unable to check the actual disc itself for codes so I'm just curious to know if this is a genuine re-release or another of those "Swedish re-issues" we hear so much about?!

It could be a never played copy from the original release.

As for if it's a good album... a lot of fans think it's the best of his 80s solo albums. Personally, I don't like it as well as his other two albums, but I do like it.

As for the songs, to be honest, when I got the album, I thought "Ever Since The World Began" was the only one that sounded like a Tommy Shaw song. I do think they are good songs though, just different from what I expected from Tommy. He does get a writing credit on all the songs on the album except that one, and one of them is a sole writing credit (no co-writer).

RE: Tommy Shaw 'Ambition' is way overrated.

Kris,

I think we have this discussion before :)

When I first listened to _A_, this was after being a Styx fan since the mid 70s and having gotten TS's first two solo CDs. I had expected TS's song writing on _A_ and was very dissatisfied when after a first disappointing listen noticed that he had not written a single song on _A_.

I guess it depends what you are looing for. Don't buy _A_ if you are expecting TS's song writing.

Big Dog

For years it has been at the top of want lists and it WAS as rare as rocking horse shit. If anyone is after an original I happen to have a spare copy for trade/sale.

Ambition is by far the best CD that Tommy has done.......the songs are all strong and very melodic. Although his version of 'Ever Since The World Began' does pale in comparison to Survivors version........at least his doesn't have that annoying intro from the movie 'Lockup'. Songs like 'Outsider', 'Lay Them Down', title track', 'No Such Thing'.......all great tracks. I don't really think there is any filler on the CD. His other 2 you mentioned are boring ..Snzzzzzzzzzz ~~ Susumu do yourself a favor and pick this CD up, if you buy the others you'll hear what I mean.

Tommy Shaw 'Ambition' is way overrated.

Tommy did not write the songs on _Ambition_. The rumor is that his record label forced him to, since they were not pleased with his songwriting at the time. The second realted rumor is that he was so wacked on drugs that his song writing was for sh*t.

Tommy's first two solo albums, _Girls with Guns_ and _What If_, were written by him and a cut above _A_.
Originally _A_ did not sell well and only a had a limited CD printing, which lead to it being a rarity. Way back when, I bought _A_ used, thought it sucked, and had a world of problems trying to find a used CD store to take it in a trade.

Big Dog
