Open Skyz/Hugo rocks!!!

I recently picked up the Open Skyz-S/T album and I must say that it is excellent!!! I have heard some assorted soundbytes of Hugo, but nothing that ever really had me going. I popped that bad-boy in my CD player and I was hooked from the opening......uh.....hook. Now I am adding more Hugo material to my wish list. Check it out if you haven't heard it, I think you will be impressed.
I guess I was turned-off by the constant Steve Perry comparisons. I like my music to be as original as possible. Influences are great, but carbon copies aren't. Well, it's true, at times he sounds just like Steve Perry. But, he pulls it off well, in fact very well.

RE: Open Skyz/Hugo rocks!!!

Carl,

I appreciate your response and pretty much disagree with everything you said. Differences of opinion are what make the world go around, right? In any event, ROR was way too pop for me and TBF (IMO) was a slow turd. Please keep in mind that When You Love a Woman is a super ballad. I like the earlier Journey work that was more up tempo which is why I don't particularly care for either record (I have several copies of both).

As far as Hugo goes, opinions vary. It may be true that Hugo wants to be Perry. His vocal style is very similar to Perrys. IMO, Hugo's writting skills and musical style suits my personal tastes better. I also think that Hugo has a voice as good as or better than Perry's. Don't get me wrong dude, I like Perry too and Journey has the legacy it does due to his help along with the other band mates. I just personally like Hugo better. And besides, he plays every instrument under the sun. Chalfant is also a super singer that I would put up with either vocalist. The Storm's work also blows away ROR and TBF IMO.

I still have respect for Perry but that's the way I see it. And besides, I'm still pissed at Perry for loosing interest in Journey : ) .

Later,

Aaron

P.S. Surfpunk is right, Valentine kicks major ass!

How can you say Hugo's
album is better than anything Journey have put out since 83 ?
From a production point alone the Journey records wipe the floor with Hugo's.
Don't get me wrong I like Hugo and have all the records he has sung on but I think people go a bit overboard with their praise of this guy.
He desperately wan'ts to be Steve Perry and anyone who say's otherwise is fooling themselves. He has the look and the moves but be honest, he hasn't got the voice of Perry. Yes he has a similar sound but has not got the strength, range, control or character. As for the songs they're good aor but nothing outstanding and most of the riffs are the same with the odd bit of variation here and there.
Raised On Radio and Trial By Fire are brilliant albums. Listen again.
