MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Napster crashes and burns!!!

Well, so that's it.....Napster got it in the cornhole. Judge Marilyn Something has ordered them to shut down by Friday, Pacific Time!

So it's time to stock up and get the hell out, boys & girls! One last go-round for all!
Get it all while you can, Everything Must Go, we're going the fuck out of business!!!!!!

Yee-haw!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I knew it would happen sooner or later. That piggish little imp Lars must have peed himself......I hope he loses all his money on the stock market or something, or gets lynched by an angry mob.....it'd be all over CNN.

I'm gonna be hanging out on the hard rock server I guess, or that server that takes a while to get to by clicking on and off and then suddenly a bunch of people appear on your hotlist.....

Go plunder & pillage each other's shit while you still can, THE WORLD IS ENDING!

Of course, it really isn't - there's still Opennap and those cheapo ones where all the Nap people will flock...and supposedly Gnutella is good!

I'm outta here.....
Jack.

Yesiree.....

Hullo folks,

The excuse that Napster should stay on as a promotional tool is kind of a weak, because most people by far want it because of the music they get for free instead of being nice to small bands. But even so, what Rammy mentions does happen, believe it or not.

I've encountered several people downloading stuff off me like some Bon Jovi or Def Lep B-sides, and when I start talking to them, finding out what their tastes are, I sometimes go, "Oh, you may want to check out these songs by a band called Harem Scarem, or these by Giant and so on....." and many times they see me again and thank me and ask for more recommendations, so it does happen. But the question is, will these new fans ever support the artist by buying anything? Who the hell knows.....depends on the person, I guess.

And yeah, this is just a temporary thing. Impish Lars doesn't, if I may say this like he would, like, motherfuckin realize that like, technology is like, a motherfuckin Hydra.

You can chop off heads and there will always be another and then they'll grow back. Technology is like a mutating virus, a fungus that crawls its way in through the sewage pipes if you don't let it in through the door. Even if they shut them all down: Scour, Gnutella, etc....it'll come back in a few years, but modified and even more bad-ass. The only way is to find some agreement you and the Hydra can live with together. Trying to kill it will only give you headaches.

Plus, you've got to remember this only applies to the US and affects Napster because it is an American company. So even if they banned all the programs like Napster, someone in a country with laxer laws with regards to copyright infringement could open one of these things up, and the internet being the global juggernaut it is, anyone would access it and the US government could do squat.

Cheers,
Jack.

Maybe even a royalty system base on subscriptions!!!

Lars Ulrich is a prick! - I understand his concern but to shut Napster down is doing Music an injustice.
Gnutella update

Here is what

http://gnutella.wego.com/

is currently saying:

"Due to the unprecedented traffic volume following the Napster decision we had to take the servers offline temporarily to increase bandwidth and capacity. The www.gnutella.wego.com site will be up again in a few hours as soon as the necessary upgrades are completed. "

The rats are leaving the ship in mass :)

I also read the follow article by by Ben Charny, ZDNet News:
http://news.excite.com/news/zd/000727/14/musicians-fight-for

"But the record industry and some other MP3 company executives say the public had better get ready for a big disappointment when the record companies finally roll out their catalogs onto the Internet. Savings will be in the pennies, they said.

The cost of encryption to secure downloads is just one extra price to pay to offer music online. Then comes watermarking, content protection, distribution and merchant gateways before it reaches the listener.

Record companies will also have to spend large sums on cataloging, copyright tracking and distributing royalties to the artists, the executives said. "

I guess record companies are missing the point. It sounds like they are trying to make digital music as expensive as possible, for no apparent reason other to maintain status quo.

The future is digitally delivered music at minial cost and minimal infrastructure.

BD
