In the same breath I have you mention WATCHTOWER who were the trailblazers of technical metal. They released 2 albums, 'Energetic Dissassembly' ('85) and 'Control & Resistance' ('89). The former features guitarist Billy White (later joined Don Dokken on 'Up from the Ashes') and vocalist Jason McMaster who left to join Dangerous Toys. C&R features Ron Jarzombek (Spastic Ink, Gordian Knot) on guitar and Alan Tecchio (Hades) on vocals. Both records suffer from mediocre production, but the music is absolutely incredible and a must for any fan of technical metal.

Another amazing technical band are MESHUGGAH from Sweden who combine the heaviness and brutality of Pantera with the technical aspect of WatchTower. Their last 2 albums, 'Destroy Erase Improve' and 'Chaospshere', are beyond anything that's ever been recorded. Their guitarist also has an even more technical semi-instrumental side project under the name Frederik Thordendal & Special Defects. Their album 'Sol Niger Within' is out via Nuclear Blast and/or Relapse.

Also, if you like Cynic, you should check out Sean Malone & Sean Reinert's latest project, GORDIAN KNOT. Very atmospheric, semi-tech metal; guests incl. Ron Jarzombek (WatchTower, S. Ink), Trey Gunn (King Crimson), and John Myung (D. Theater). The album is out on the Sensory label.
