Looking into the crystal ball.....

What do you think will happen with the rock scene within the next 10 years? What style will prevail? Which band will have the big "breakthrough"? (Meaning massive cd sales, mass acceptance, etc...)

In my opinion....I think alot of the older bands have come out with quality releases but haven't regained the popularity they once had. So....I think that some young new band will come along with a new sound and have a massive breakthrough. I also believe they will have somewhat of an eighties rock sound (with a bit of seventies & nineties mixed in).

What do all of you think??

RE: I know better than to guess about the future :

Hi Peter , I am not really complaining about todays bands attitude ....I am simply saying that the standard of songwriting leaves a lot to be desired and the use of computers is becoming more and more commonplace , in some cases replacing guitar or keyboards.I do remember my mother telling me Iron Maiden et al were the biggest load of rubbish she ever heard back in the early 80's , so I guess every generation is the same , or as Danger Danger said on Rock America...." I guess that they forgot when they were young" , well no chance of that ever happening......I still love it hard and LOUD (just a little more discerning over the material)...HAIL KILL........Kieran

We dug those bands because they were loud, rebellious and obnoxious, remember? Cut to twenty years later and we do the same thing as our parents did! Complaining about todays teens and their bad taste in music. Fact is, they like their music just as loud, rebellious and obnoxious as we did - hence listening to Korn, Limp and all the Rap.

Peter

Despite them being very current sounding and combining the musicianship influence of the 80's.

My music collection will make a great 'bargain bin' one day!!!

RE: I know better than to guess about the future :

It's way too hard to predict what will be big in the future...I mean who would have predicted Limp Bizkit , Korn , Deftones, being huge back in 1990 , when most melodic hard rock bands were riding the crest of a wave.Firehouse won an Americn Music Award for Best Newcomer in 1990 ahead of Nirvana and Alice in Chains and lo and behold by 1993 Grunge ruled the airwaves and Firehouse were almost forgotten.........For the record I hope to see any up and coming bands actually playing instruments not sampling sounds on a computer......songwriting as an art is suffering badly , is a matter of fact there are very very few artists out there in the mainstream who can write a decent tune with meaning , melody and musicianship...you only have to look at the amount of cover versions of 70's 80's and now 90's bands that are getting chart action ......not only is MHR underground it also appears the art of songwriting is dying at an alarming rate.....just my thoughts on the matter........cheers....Kieran

I know better than to guess about the future :)

I can say with some confidence, though, that the music scene as you knew in 1988 (or any other year really) will not ever make a comeback in the future.

High school kids will end up picking what defines the current music scene, now and in the future. The scene is always changing so there is some hope that if we wait some of the old will make a brief comeback.

Personally, I just hope that at some point high schoolers will start caring again about musicianship and the current crop of bands will be forced to write better music. I also hope that the internet delivers on some of its potential and get more diversity back in the scene, like late 60s, 70s and to some degree the 80s.

For now, I can console myself with the bands in the current scene who the high school kids have made a mistake by not identiifying as 70s and 80s throwbacks, like Goo Goo Dolls, Collective Soul, Savage Garden, Vertical Horizon, ...

BD

I think in the end it'll come to all styles living one next to another, and everybody sticking to whatever he/she likes best.
