MP3.com/Warners/BMG deal

In case you haven't heard Warner and BMG have agreed a deal with MP3.com that will ensure they and their artists are paid a royalty for each track downloaded through the ' my MP3.com' service. At this point it's not clear if any other majors will do the same but in the light of the Metallica /Napster controversy this is an interesting development. What it does mean is that MP3.com is likely to become a SUBSCRIPTION service in order to be able to pay back these payments. Something which sees the owner taking an about turn on his previous 'rebellious' stance.

So is this good or bad? The music's still there but you're gonna have to pay for it.
Any complaints?

I will not pay to subscribe to a site that I use to explore UNSIGNED artists. Why should my money go to BMG/Warner when these labels ignore our genre and the bands that are struggling hard on mp3.com? Unless they are will be paying the bands directly, then I'd be behind it. But if my $ goes into funding someone else's downloads, forgeddaboutit.

joe
