Europe/ Joey Tempest

Hi again!

I just wonder what your favourite Europe album is, also if Joey´´s solo stuff is any worth. Actually i dont think it can be that bad, cause he is maybe my major influence on my songwriting. With Europe he was more than fantastic!!!!!!!

So are there any news about him or about the possibility of a EUROPE reunion???

There havent been any interviews with the band, except with Kee Marcello in hte german Mag Metal Heart, but there its also not "real" information about the reunion, just suggestions.

thanx

ALEX, 18

I`d say dark not "cheap"

The first Europe album is dark not cheap. Joey Tempest`s vocals are a bit conservative but I wouldn`t say "bloody horrible". This album is a bit raw and unpolished but that to me is what`s great about it. It has a darkness and rawness to it that they lost after ' The Final Countdown'. I mean the keyboard intro to 'Words of Wisdom' always gives me a chill when I hear it. The riffs by Norum kick ass as well as all the solo`s he plays. The drumming by Tony Reno is excellent filled with big (air drum heaven) fills. John Leven`s bass playing is also very solid like a bass players should be. So besides Joey Tempest`s conservative vocal approach and the decent production, recording, mastering whatever.... this album is raw, dark, unpolished and kicks major ass. For a bunch of teenagers I`d say they did a "bloody" fine job on their first record.

Fan of the 80`s and first Europe album,
Chris

Don´t get me wrong, I do like some of their stuff but Joey´s vocals on that eponymous album are bloody horrible. In The Future To Come is particularly gruesome and that´s the first track! The rest of the band are OK (Norum and Reno play well) but overall it sounds like a demo you´d tout to get some pub gigs...

Kee Marcello's guitar sound is awesome and I prefer the version of 'Open Your Heart' to the original.

As for Joey's solo stuff i'm backing 'A Place To Call Home' which is very cool. Sort of mid western/new country style but if you listen long and hard enough you can hear the hallmarks of Joey's Europe writing style. Well worth checking out but don't expect it to sound like Europe. The second one 'Azalea Place' I didn't like.

Pretty much in the same vein as Nelson's 'Because They Can'. His second effort, 'Azalea Place' is a bit more experimental and introduces latin influences. OK if you're into that kinda stuff.

RE: Europe/ Joey Tempest

My fave Europe albums are 'Wings Of Tomorrow' and 'Europe'. 'The Final Countdown' has some cool songs but the production is way too wimpy and keyboard-heavy. No wonder Norum left in disgust - his guitars are nowhere near as prominent as they should be.

As for Joey Tempest - never heard his second solo album, but 'A Place To Call Home' is great. Very well written pop/rock not a million miles away from Bon Jovi land but somehow a lot more classy.

I don't doubt there will be a 'real' Europe reunion anytime soon. I think Joey is in a different space now musically and he doesn't need the money either. As much as I love(d) the band - I don't see why every last band on earth HAS to get back together. The magic of 15, 20 years ago can never be dublicated anyway and most reunions happen for money and the results are mostly second-rate (the new Maiden is a only the latest example).
