John West - recommendations wanted!

I saw Royal Hunt coupla nights ago, supporting Dio... great gig all round... I was very impressed by John West´s singing and want to get something with him on. But where do I start? Royal Hunt´s Fear? Artension (which?)? Solo? My tastes hover around the Malmsteen-Dio-Impelliteri-Ten-Sonata Arctica area. All comments gratefully received! Thanks!

RE: John West AND Royal Hunt recommendations wante

Steve, yes that's DC on 'Message' - it's from their best album, 'Paradox'. The first 2 RH discs are god awful and have a different singer, so stay away from anything but the Cooper-era stuff. 'Fear' is/was a big letdown and John West is completely wasted in that band - biggest mistake he ever made is join RH coz' they sure as well don't seem to be going anywhere - but down.

The guitar players on 'Permanent Mark' are Jeff Kollman (Mogg/Way, Edwin Dare, Cosmosquad) and Scott Stine (Haji's Kitchen, Enaic Requiem). Both are absolutely phenomenal - Scott's an all-out shredder while Jeff, who can rip it up as well, brings more of a jazzy-Schenker-on-steroids vibe to the table - very tasty licks. Both Scott and Jeff contribute songs on PM - the rest was written by George Bellas who must have bailed before the recording for some reason. My fave songs are 'Permanent Mark', which is Jeff's, and 'Pariah' by Scott, but everything is very, very good - even most of the Bellas stuff. Easily one of the most underrated metal albums of the late 90's IMO.

John West AND Royal Hunt recommendations wanted!

Thanks all of you for your recommendations! I am tempted to get Permanent Mark, who are the guitarists on it? I heard good press about that last Cozy Powell album too... looks like I might be spending more than I bargained for...!
Out of interest: anyone care to comment on RH´s best? Which album does "Message To God" come from (bought the single at the gig, can´t stop playing it! That´s DC Cooper singing though, right?)? Thanks again!!!

The first song
sounds like Glenn Hughes at his rockin best. I also like the Artesion stuff alot.
However the new Royal Hunt was a letdown, his vocals were too much in
check to fit the format. John West also sang on Cozy Powell last CD, which
he sounds great.

RE: Small correction!

Thanks for pointing that out to me. I still prefer 'High Definition', Vitalij's album with Greg Howe, over 'Extreme Measures' with Bellas. I'm not into Bellas whether he's on his own (YAWN...), with Mogg/Way or Kuprij. I mean, the guy is a technically phenomenal guitarist but he's 'blessed' with the musical personality of a pet rock. Everything just screams 'looky look - I can play like Yngwie', only he has neither the songwriting ability, tone, feel nor vibrato of Malmsteen. Next.

RE: John West - recommendations wanted!

Steve, I think West's vocals on the latest Royal Hunt disc, 'Fear', are very subdued and the music lacks punch - not a very good album IMO. By far my favorite West album his his second solo album, 'Permanent Mark', which he recorded with the Cosmosquad guys - Jeff Kollman, Shane Gaalaas & Barry Sparks - plus Scott Stine on guitar and Lonnie Park on keys. Sick playing by all the guys (wicked guitars!) and John just belts it out - killer stuff! There are neo-classical leanings but they're nowhere near as prominent as on the Artension stuff (Yngwie-meets-Rainbow/Deep Purple basically). JW did 4 albums with them before leaving to join RH; 'Eye Of The Strom' is probably their best - 'Phoenix Rising' is cool, too. 'Machine', their latest, is kind of disappointing and truth be told the band is really starting to tread water now. The musicianship is ill though - if you get off on the early Yngwie - Jens guitar/key duels then this is probably your bag (although you'd be better off picking up Artension's Vitalji Kuprij's instrumental solo albums where he fights it out with George Bellas (1st album), Greg Howe (2nd - totally sick!), and Tony MacAlpine (3rd), respectively. All these records, including John's solo debut, 'Mind Journey', are on Shrapnel.
