TOP TEN MELODIC ROCK RELEASES OF THE 1990s...

1.DREAM THEATER - IMAGES AND WORDS - Awesome prog metal, in many ways gave credence to the new "progressive metal" movement.
2.THE DISTANCE - THE DISTANCE - great heavy AOR featuring Ousey from Heartland and the fantastic Kenny KAOS on guitar.
3.HELLOWEEN - BETTER THAN RAW - their latest release - heavy as anything but melodies still abound and great dual guitar riffing.
4.AMAZE ME - WONDERLAND - this one caught me by surprise - a fine album from the Swedes. As infectious as a candy bar.
5.GIANT - TIME TO BURN - classic aor, Dan "the man" Huff was a master.
6.BRUCE DICKINSON - ACCIDENT OF BIRTH - Bruce left the withering Maiden and after a sloppy start recorded some awesome melodic metal. I love this one but his last one was even heavier and just as good. Great to see him back with Iron Maiden, killer new album.
7.THUNDER - BACKSTREET SYMPHONY - their first album was their best. Great hard rock, simply awesome live.
8.WARRANT - DOG EAT DOG - don't laugh. Jani Lane's a great songwriter and this album's much heavier than you'd expect. Great catchy hooks and big choruses.
9.JAG PANZER - THE AGE OF MASTERY - great intelligent power metal. Sombre but exhilarating.
10.HEARTLAND - BRIDGE OF FOOLS - These guys should be huge and in my opinion Chris Ousey is THE best vocalist in Britain.
Any opinions?KAOS.

This other Steve may sing his ass off and the songs
on the new CD will probaly be great...but it will not sell as well as any previous Journey CDs...mark my words...
Of course I've been wrong once or twice before...but I'm pretty sure of this..I guess we'll see...

This probably won't post, but here is the way I see it....

The reunion cd, Trial By Fire, sold a million copies---with NO TOUR. Considering that most people didn't even know Journey was together, coupled with the fact that the GH cd shot to 10 million copies soon after the summer '99 tour suggested that sales for TBF probably could have been doubled or tripled if they had toured. Instead, you had a band--or lead vocalist, to be totally truthful--that wouldn't/couldn't perform on tour and declined all invitations to perform on something like the American Music Awards...of which Journey was invited to perform at.
On the other hand, you now have a band that is very willing to tour. Judging from the crowd response at the shows, I think most fans will buy the cd when it is released--some of those probably don't even know Perry is gone. So, you should get a lot of the casual fans buying it anyways--totalling maybe 300-500,000 copies depending, especially if word of mouth is good. The added incentive of people wanting to hear if Journey can survive w/o Perry should bring a few in also just out of curiosity. If they get a popular single on the radio like "When You Love a Woman", you will get more fans that happen to like the song buying the cd, pushing the total close to TBF numbers (1x platinum). Then, on top of it all, you have a band that is willing to tour and wants to play live and won't turn down TV appearances or other such promotional ideas......and tours always bring in more sales as you get people at the concert that didn't know there was a cd out, so they buy it.
When you add up the numbers, you should get a figure at least comparable to TBF if not higher after you figure in the sales from the tour to support the cd--numbers TBF did not have, so this alone works in the favor of the new cd as ANY sales because of the tour are more than TBF got. Of course, all of this is dependant on the cd itself and whether people accept it, but advance word from Kevin Shirley is saying it's the best cd they have done in a long time--and better than TBF.

we shall see......
Kevin

Or when Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen. It HAS happened before that a band can change lead singers and continue on.
Yes this is true...
But how many bands that are viewed as "has-been' 80's bands" have had much success on the tour scene or album sales-wise with different lead vocalists?
Case in point-
VH with Cherone...
Foreigner with Johnny Edwards..
Styx with Gowan...
Survivor...I won't even start..*grin*
TOTO with anyone but Kimball...
Genesis with...whoever that guy was that replaced Phil Collins..
Here's a good example:
After Brian Howe left Bad Company, the band decided they wanted to get back to the classic Bad Co. sound. They hired a guy (Robert Hart) that sounded almost exactly like original singer Paul Rodgers. THey released two great CDs with Hart as their vocalist. Both albums are probaly in bargain bins everywhere, and when I caught them live while they were touring to promote 'Company Of Strangers' they were playing in a 300 seat capacity bar!!
Last year I caught Bad Company live again with Paul Rodgers this time singing. Needless to say, It was in a huge arena that was pretty much packed. (Ironically, David Lee Roth and his circus act were the opening act). The new songs that Paul Rodgers and Co. recorded were pretty poor compared to the stuff Bad Company was doing with Howe or Hart....
So in a way it really doesn't matter how good the new Journey CD is..it simply will not sell as well as an album featuring Perry...it's all perception unfortunately...
For the record, if Bad Company came out with a new CD featuring Howe or Hart I would buy it....as for the new Journey CD...I'll probally buy it too.....
If Journey wants to ever have a hit album ever again they NEED Steve Perry. This other Steve may sing his ass off and the songs on the new CD will probaly be great...but it will not sell as well as any previous Journey CDs...mark my words...
Of course I've been wrong once or twice before...but I'm pretty sure of this..I guess we'll see...

Or when Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen. It HAS happened before that a band can change lead singers and continue on. well......we shall see soon what happens come September. I've seen them 3 times with Augeri and they blew Foreigner off the stage and the buzz on Kevin Shirley's (producer of the new cd) website is very positive. The majority has accepted Augeri on vocals live--now comes the true test which really depends on the strength of the material. Comparing Perry's solo stuff and the Journey cds, it is pretty obvious that he was not solely responsible for the "classic" Escape/Frontiers Journey sound--if truth be told, Jon Cain probably has that more than anybody.

and my humble list.......in unarranged order.....

Good list...except I don't have Eye Of The Storm..gotta get it..I love the first Storm album......

2nd one is a lot better, IMO. The s/t cd had some killers on it, but some of the rest were hit and miss, while the EOTS cd is solid throughout. They did manage to sound more like Journey on the 2nd cd though.... Check Kevin Chalfant's site, www.cliquerecords.com, for some sound clips of EOTS (and the rest of his work).

Kevin

Augeri seems to be working out beautifully--something NOBODY expected!

as for the rest of the collection.....pretty good...theoretically Signal and Giant's debut fall in '89, but we'll let ya slide since not everybody keeps up with time that well.....lol

and my humble list.......in unarranged order.....

Signal - Loud and Clear.......I know it is '89, but I am not on time either a lot! IMO, Mark Free's finest hour...this should have sold a truckload!

The Storm - Eye of the Storm....best cd Journey never recorded, even though it might as well have been with the lineup. Chalfant and Rolie work miracles together....

Dare - Blood From Stone....the melody of Out of the Silence (which would be here also as fav cds ever--maybe we should do this next!) and the power of hard rock...it changes styles a bit here and there, but I love it

Bob Catley - The Tower....his best since Wings of Heaven. Love the production job on this one!

Hardline - Double Eclipse....need I say much? Neal Schon rocks! Never the greatest fan of Johnny Gioeli, but the songs are good enough to overpower any less than desirable qualities of his voice.

Journey - Trial By Fire......a bit ballady, but a wonderful showcase for probably the best rock vocalist ever, IMO--even though his voice isn't what it used to be

Stuart Smith - Heaven and Earth........Kelly Hansen, Joe Lynn Turner, Glenn Hughes--can this possibly be bad?!?!?!? lol A bit varied, but I love it

Fair Warning - Go!.....just fun stuff.....Tommy Heart is incredible and some absolutely killer songs!

Giant - Time To Burn.....good stuff! High energy and a great production

Phil Collins - ...But Seriously.....An '89 leftover, but still wonderful. Seriously bordering in AOR territory....

runners up......House of Shakira (something, I don't know what), Hugo s/t, Harem Scarem (s/t or Mood Swings) and probably a few I'm missing...

Kevin

Mitch Malloy - 'Mitch Malloy' - I still pull this one out on a regular basis.
9. Jude Cole - 'A View From 3rd Street' - If you have never heard of this guy...this CD is a good place to start.
8. Giant - 'Last Of The Runaways' I think that's what it's called...I still love cranking up 'I'm A Believer'...
7. Signal - 'Signal' I always thought this CD was going to be huge....
6. Boulevard - 'Into The Street' ...'Lead Me On' is one of my all-time favorite songs
5. Journey - 'Trial By Fire' A few too many ballads but...Steve Perry is AWESOME...I hope we see another Journey CD with this guy
4. Sting - 'Ten Sumoners Tales' Sting is a God..I'm pretty sure of it...
3. Harem Scarem - 'Mood Swings' I love this CD and the first one...but I have never been able to get into 'Voice Of Reason'....
2. Bad Company- 'Holy Water' I love Bad Company old and new...but this CD is just great. Brian Howe can sing his ass off...check out his solo CD 'Tangled In Blue'
1. TOTO - 'Mindfields' I grew up with these guys. After 'Kingdom Of Desire' and 'Tambu' I was getting a little worried, but this CD restored my faith in them. One of the most underated bands of all-time. These guys do not get the credit they deserve!!!

As you can tell, I like my melodicrock.....very melodic and not neccessarily really heavy...
essbee

Several reasons. 1. I don´t think the songs are quite as good. 2. Kollman does a good job of impersonating Schenker, which is fine if you want that but this is the Mogg/Way project, not UFO. I want a guitarist with more, y´know? And Bellas sure is more, IMO...

More comments. ...

"Bellas strikes me as a post-Yngwie noodler with little to no feel and a really generic tone"

Post-Yngwie yes (well he has to be, doesn´t he!!!) but no clone. Yngwie remains my favourite guitarist of all time but Bellas is no mere copyist. His phrasing and style is different. Together with Rob Johnson, Bellas represents the best of the next generation of shred players IMHO. No feel? That´s what so many people say about Yngwie, remember...

Walk On Water starts off great then after 3 songs loses it. It´s very overrated and falls way short of Lights Out, Obsession and any of the Chapman-era albums. IMO....

Forget Walk On Water, this album is the best thing the boys from UFO ever did after the sublime Lights Out. And George Bellas just smokes on guitar.

Steve, just curious - did you ever check out the second Mogg/Way, 'Chocolate Box'? I far prefer it to EOTW because Jeff Kollman is not only a much better songwriter, his style fits a lot better with Mogg & Way's whole trip. Bellas strikes me as a post-Yngwie noodler with little to no feel and a really generic tone who is lost trying to inject even an once of Schenker. Kollman the other hand has Schenker down pat in spots but brings his own vibe into the music, too. He seem like a natural wheras Bellas sounds forced whren he is slowing down. I remember Mogg saying he was very unhappy with EOTW because of Bellas whereras he's been raving about Kollman and apparently wants to do another Mogg/Way album with Jeff even though Schenker is back in UFO - for now. Oh yeah, 'Walk On Water' is FAR better than 'Edge Of The World'.;-) In fact, I deem WOW the best comeback album of any geezer band. I wish Maiden, Crimson Glory, etc. would've been able to pull it off as well as UFO did with WOW.

The order would change from day to day, but these would all make my desert island discs.

=1= Yngwie Malmsteen- Eclipse - the most complete album he´s evermade, a perfect follow-up to 1988´s Odyssey
=1=Yngwie Malmsteen - Seventh Sign - Yngwie back to his metal roots and playing more ferocious than ever
2. Ten - The Name Of The Rose - a masterpiece of melody and musicianship. Brilliant performances and songs.
3. Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica - I haven´t heard a better debut album by anyone this good since Van Halen 1. And they´re all so impossibly young!
4. Ten - Never Say Goodbye - the best live album I´ve ever heard. Honestly. Top notch versions of all the faves and unreleased material too.
5. John Norum - Face The Truth - Norum at his best, augmented by the undisputed talents of a living legend - Glenn Hughes. Every home should have one.
6. Mogg/Way - Edge Of The World. Forget Walk On Water, this album is the best thing the boys from UFO ever did after the sublime Lights Out. And George Bellas just smokes on guitar.
7. Black Sabbath - Tyr. Possibly the most complete BS album that ever lived. Not a dufff song from start to finish. Melodic, powerful, dynamic.
=8=Impelliteri - Screaming Symphony. Prime melodic power metal at its best! Not a ballard in sight and all powered by the scorching guitar of Chris Impelliteri, and the searing vocals of Rob Rock!
=8=Judas Priest - Painkiller. Metal to the max! A huge return to form for JP, largely due to the influx of new blood - Scott Travis lets his presence known as the new drummer right from the start.
9. Heart - Brigade - An AOR classic. No female vocalist can match Ann Wilson and she is simply exceptional on tracks like Wild Child, Secret and Stranded.
10. Dio - Lock Up The Wolves - a very underrated album, the perfect follow up to the somewhat disappointing Dream Evil and in rowan Robertson a perfect musical counterpart. Pity it didn´t last.8.

OK there are 12 albums in all...but I´d smuggle ém in somehow.....!

Come again...?

Bruce left the withering Maiden and after a sloppy start recorded some awesome melodic metal.

Sloppy start? I hope you are not referring to the godly 'Skunkworks', possibly THE most underrated hard rock album of the 90's, and on par with AoB and TCW. 'Balls To Picasso' contains some great songs as well - 'Tears of the Dragon' is Bruce's best song ever. 'Tattooed Millionaire' is a fun hard rock album - obviously different from his other stuff but the quality is there. Now as far as the new Maiden is concerned - sure it's their best since '7th Son', but overall this is pretty much a stinker, safe for 2 or 3 songs; the rest is meandering crap, courtesy of the once brilliant Steve Harris, that goes on and on and never gets to the point. Nowhere near the 80's classics - no wonder they only sold an abysmal 38'000 copies in the US in the first week. Stick a fork in the old Maiden coz she's done. Let's hope Bruce will be a little less hesitant now and go back to making albums with Roy Z - that's where it's at.
