Maiden support slot.

So who should get it?
I'd like to see TEN support Maiden myself and increase their fanbase by thousands.
Whadda ya think?

RE: Maiden support slot.

Mark seems to know what's going on with this slot on the UK. I think it's a shame for TEN to be honest. Just how are they going to get out of this once a year (or other year) gig at Maximes trip? It's all very well selling in Japan but myself and many fans of the band just see unfulfilled potential on a global scale. That said I have to agree with John Q that, good as TEN are they are pedalling a quite dated sound and irrespective of their quality, they must seem like dinosaurs to some of the kids in America.

So what's the answer? Are we still waiting for the ultimate AOR/rap/metal crossover band or what?

By the way, Priest support Maiden er...I think not! Talk about the tail wagging the dog!

RE: Maiden support slot.

Mark, I'm sure Ten could put together a set of heavy songs and do well supporting Maiden in Europe and Japan. And I agree with you - the older part of the Maiden US audience probably wouldn't mind a band like Ten (or Stratovarius). Fact is that unless you are Metallica you have to bring along cutting edge heavy bands if you want to sell out arenas in the US. Ozzy has done it for years bringing along the likes of Sepultura, Korn, and Fear Factory because he (or Sharon anyway...) knew he had to connect with the younger crowds to stay up there.
Maiden are sort of doing it with Slayer who aren't a kiddie band any more either, but they'll bring in a bit of a different demographic, plus they always draw well (btw, I know tons of people who are into both Maiden & Slayer). Halford will bring heads as well since it will be his first time out with the new band - people will be curious ot see him. I really do not think a band like Ten will ever break over here - melodic (hard) rock is a thing of the past as far as the mainstream goes.
I think a lot of Europeans do not realize that the American youth of today is exposed to very different types of music than kids were in the 70's and 80's. Back then it was overwhelmingly rock and hard rock - nowadays even kids in the heartland grow up with and are heavily exposed to hip-hop and rap, and if they listen to metal it's the heavier type bands.
That's exactly why bands such as Korn or Limp Bizkit are so incredibly successful because they have figured out how to marry those 2 sub genres. I think there is a chasm now between America and Europe, where things haven't changed all that much, and it is reflected in the music that comes out of those places, at least where new bands are concerned.

RE: Maiden support slot.

Hi JohnQ,

>I think Ten would be booed off the stage here in the States - way too wimpy too >support a metal beast like Maiden

Can`t agree with this. I actually think that TEN could really blow the MAIDEN audience away. They`d only be doing around 45 minutes and a set consisting of tracks like THE NAME OF THE ROSE, WINGS OF THE STORM, THE ROBE, BRIGHT ON THE BLADE, ARCADIA, WAIT FOR YOU, SPELLBOUND, FEAR THE FORCE, THE PHANTOM plus some newies such as TIMELESS, THE STRANGER, DAWN STAR and the amazing THUNDER IN HEAVEN would have real Maiden fans ( i.e. those who are into the classic period of "Number Of The Beast" / "Piece Of Mind" / "Powerslaves" ) wetting themselves.
That`s where TEN win over most other acts these days. They could do that tour and win over the audience and then do a slot with TOTO the month after and do a completely killer AOR set for that audience.

>aside from the fact that Maiden are looking to hook up with names that will bring >in extra heads. Ten wouldn't bring in anyone outside of Japan.

True to an extent, certainly in the U.S. Over in the UK, Germany and Italy I reckon TEN would be considered a good opener for Maiden. I remember when they used to take out unknown acts like GRAND PRIX and the like. You`d imagine that they`d be too light for the Maiden audience but they went down a storm in the UK.

The main problem that I see with the Maiden support slot is that they are filling it with incredibly heavy acts which I really don`t think is the right move. They`d be better off with acts like TEN, STRATOVARIUS, EDGUY or even someone like AXEL RUDI PELL. That`s where the people who liked old Maiden are. The kids into SLAYER etc won`t go for Maiden at all. Anyway, that`s my twopenneth.

Bye for now,
Mark

No one other than the hard core fans want to see Priest with Ripper even though he is a good replacement. They need Rob if they want to go back to playing bigger venues and he needs them. As for Maiden and Bruce - the new album is a little disappointing from what I've heard so far - certainly not the type of album they needed to explode big time. But, as long as Bruce continues making solo albums like AoB and TCW - and I believe he intends to carry on solo - I could care less how good/mediocre/bad Maiden are.
