TOP TEN CURRENT "MELODIC" ROCK BANDS

For the sake of friendly argument I've thrown in my picks for the top ten current melodic rock bands.
1.NIGHT RANGER - still awesome. Have toughened their sound and in Gillis and Watson have two of the best guitarists.
2.DANGER DANGER - they seriously rock. Paul Laine is a vocal God.
3.HEARTLAND - pure AOR. These guys should be MASSIVE.
4.IRON MAIDEN - Still destroys all the "new" metal pretenders. Always melodic, reunion tour will be one of the biggest ever.
5.UNION - Interesting new band, blending contemporary sound with old fashioned rock attitude.
6.TEN- Great arena rock, sound just like WHITESNAKE used to before they wimped out. Will take over Thunder's mantle as premier British hard rock band.
7.DREAM THEATER- Expert musicians, latest album is an conceptual corker.
8.HAREM SCAREM - Please go back to your classic sound.
9.HELLOWEEN - Germany's GREATEST METAL BAND, and that means better than Scorpions. Fantastic melodies, brilliant dual guitar.
10.VELOCITY and MILLENIUM - Two great new melodic rock bands.

TOTO These guys are so underated it's not funny. Not to mention that if you counted how many pop/rock albums these guys played on in the 70s/80s and 90's they basically helped shape the sound of melodic rock/pop. Jeff Porcaro was a monster drummer!! RIP. Not to mention the incredible talent of the other musicians in the band. Bobby Kimball, Joseph Williams and Fergie Fredriksen are all great singers. THese guys get my vote for #1.

2. Journey/Foreigner tie.
Two of the greatest vocalists ever backed by great musicians and great songwriting.

3. a whole shitload of other bands *grin*

I hope Journey featuring Steve Augeri will be all right.

No comment on the new album since nobody has heard it yet, but "world gone wild" (one of the songs previewed on the '99 tour, but no going to be on the cd) was incredible. Don't judge Augeri by the recordings of the 1998 shows in Japan--he has improved TREMENDOUSLY since then and currently sounds nothing like he did two years ago.

Kevin

(Wonderland CD)
I can describe the vocals in the band as a Lou Gramm/Steve Walsh
Hybrid. One Song sounds like a Journey song,One like a Kansas song.
and a few like Foreigner with bigger harmonies. (Great CD).

If anyone is a big Queen Fan, like myself. The closest I've heard is
a group called Phantoms Opera, the CD's are called "Following Dreams" &
"So Long To Broadway" very Queen like. Not Freddie but higher voice.

Just showing current bands with 70's - 80's sounds.

The following bands are 80s superstars.

NIGHT RANGER & SURVIVOR :My favorites.
Journey: They are one of the greatest rock bands on earth. I hope Journey featuring Steve Augeri will be all right.
Def Leppard: They are still current rock band but I didn't mention it. It means they deserve a Hall of Fame of rock artists.
Deep Purple: They are not confined to 80s but without them there would be no 80s giants. They are still great even now.
REO Speedwagon
Toto
Foreigner
Kansas
Boston

and a lots and lots more...

Regards

Susumu

Latest related item I got: Rudess Morgenstein Project: AMAZING!

#2 DANGER DANGER - undoubtedly the future of Melodic Rock/AOR -wish radio would get a clue and play "Dead Drunk & Wasted."

#3 TEN - still strong after all these years (not *that* many, actually).

#4 FAIR WARNING - YES! The power's back after the too mellow Rainmaker & Go! albums.

#5 HAREM SCAREM - love every single release they've done, although I'm more keen to the sound in Believe and Big Bang Theory - wish they had continued this style instead of wimping out as RUBBER.

#6 HELLOWEEN/GAMMA RAY - Although I still miss Kiske, Helloween is doing fabulous without him - and Kai Hansen's songwriting get's better every record.

#7 SPOCK'S BEARD - retro prog that almost outdoes the classics. On a related note, TRANSATLANTIC (DT's Portnoy's project w/ Neil Morse of SB, among others)is still the contender for album of the year.

#8 NIGHTWISH - no one delivers neo-metal like this band does. The opera vocals of Tarja are out of this world.

#9 DEF LEPPARD/BON JOVI - still the two best powerhouse rockers from the 80's still around

#10 PINK CREAM 69 - combining melody and power like no one else.

joe
