Why is this man not a major rock star?
Is he too nice a bloke for the hard and cold music industry?
Maybe, but if raw energy, talent and a monster stage presence count for anything - then
Johnny Lima will one day be a household name.
Now I loved Johnny's album to death and hear all the stories of last year's show where he received a huge wrap. I was looking forward to seeing this years show.
Johnny did not disappoint. He burst onto the stage with more energy than all the band combined before him.
He ripped through a set that included half a dozen tracks from the current album, the best track from his debut - Little Runaway and also a ripping cover of
Cheap Trick's Surrender, even if he did stuff some lyrics. Talking to Johnny afterwards, he was pretty hard on himself for not being better and missing those lyrics, but from what I saw of the crowd and the response, there were no problems.
A highlight for me was the airing of a brand new ballad
We've Got Tonight. A monster radio hit if ever there was one, we will have to wait for the next album to hear it again. Huge track though.
Lima was backed by
Teer, who need special mentions for playing to perfection and supplying great backing vocals and extra atmosphere to the stage. Good job all round.
For me, one of the better sets of the day and a great rock n roll show. Johnny is a great frontman and a true American showman.
It did end a little unfortunately. Johnny was set to ply another new tune -
Best Night Of My Life, written in tribute to his debut Gods appearance the year before. But another technical problem had the lights shut down, shutting down the set once track early. Too bad, I would have loved to hear that track!
