NEW NIGHT RANGER ALBUM SET TO ROCK FANS ONCE AGAIN:
On about my 10th playback of the new Night Ranger album High Road. Awesome as always - these guys never fail to deliver. A few absolute classics in there once again - tracks that would fit nicely on any Greatest Hits combo you could work up.
The album as a whole is very diverse...lots of old and new in there. Perhaps the most diverse NR album ever - lots of influences and stuff going on. More playback required before I can put it all into perspective and rank it among all those other great albums.
The album is released worldwide via Frontiers Records June 6.
THE MARCUS HOOK ROLL BAND FEATURING MALCOLM, ANGUS & GEORGE YOUNG WITH HARRY VANDA: The Marcus Hook Roll Band Featuring Malcolm, Angus & George Young with Harry Vanda Release Rare 1973 Studio Recording
Tales of Old Grand-Daddy ~ CD/vinyl/digital download * Release date - June 3
(Los Angeles) - Just before Malcolm and Angus Young took us on a debaucherous decent down that Highway to Hell, they joined with their talented brother, George Young and guitarist Harry Vanda, to form the brief, yet musically significant group, The Marcus Hook Roll Band. Back then, there was no such person as Marcus Hook, nor did the 'band' originate from the borough of Marcus Hook in Pennsylvania. George and his fellow musicians only ever existed as a band in studio, releasing three singles and one album in the early '70s. When any of these tracks turn up on internet auction sites today, collectors bankrupt their PayPal accounts to win them. Now, The Marcus Hook Roll Band is releasing their one and only album, 1973's Tales of Old Grand-Daddy, on June 3 through Parlophone as CD/vinyl/digital download.
The truth is, if the Marcus Hook Roll Band had ever come out of the studio, played live, travelled the world, promoted their records, and found the success they certainly deserved, then the AC/DC phenomenon that electrified the rock 'n roll landscape for decades, might never have gotten off the ground. Do we have your attention now? The Marcus Hook Roll Band is one obscure, but significant, persona of the legendary partnership of Harry Vanda and George Young. Their better known personas are the '60s beat phenomenon The Easybeats, and later the mysterious entity Flash and The Pan. Dutchman Harry Vanda and Scotsman George Young first met as displaced teenagers in an immigration hostel in Sydney, Australia. Having heard the single “Natural Man”, Capitol Records (USA) immediately expressed an interest in producing an album from The Marcus Hook Roll Band.
The Album - Tales of Old Grand-Daddy - The main recording was during July/August 1973 in Sydney. A key ingredient was the “duty free” supplied by producer Alan “Wally” Waller—Jim Beam Old Grand-Dad bourbon whiskey — hence the album name.
George Young explained , “We had Harry, myself and my kid brothers, Malcolm and Angus. We all got rotten, except for Angus, who was too young, and we spent a month in there boozing it up every night. That was the first thing Malcolm and Angus did before AC/DC. We didn't take it very seriously so we thought we'd include them to give them an idea of what recording was all about.”
Appropriately named, engineer Richard Lush, explains, “The sessions were great fun, fuelled with plenty of Old Grand-Dad bourbon. Angus Young drank milk. Despite their youth, as we all now know, Angus and his brother Malcolm played guitars as well as Harry.”
The production notes, recently unearthed at Abbey Road Studios reveal that on many of the tracks, Malcolm Young shared rhythm guitar and guitar solos. The Kentucky bourbon seems to have affected everybody's memory. For instance, there is some great slide guitar on the album but no-one can remember who supplied it. Harry thinks it might have been Kiwi-born Kevin Borich, but Kevin does not remember being there. Wally vaguely remembers Malcolm doing some slide-guitar, but really can't be sure. So the challenge for the astute listener is to figure out which licks and solos belong to a seventeen year old Angus Young. We've got our money on the second guitar in the 'Cry For Me' lead break.

ACCEPT TO TOUR AUSTRALIA:
Classic heavy metal was shaped essentially by three highly influential bands: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Accept. Two of these legendary acts have graced our shores several times but now finally Australia gets to witness the might of the “Teutonic Terror” themselves for the very first time as Accept are set to arrive in November 2014. Proudly representing the “Made in Germany” trademark, Accept fashioned distinct musical blueprints that have influenced multiple generations of followers. They have kept their music and artistry relevant around the world and have overcome staggering odds to maintain international careers for over three decades. Accept have released classic album after album with the likes of 'Balls To The Wall', 'Metal Heart' and 'Restless And Wild' all becoming some of the most influential and acclaimed Metallic slabs of all time. The unforgettable vocals of Udo Dirkschneider and riffs of Wolf Hoffmann / Herman Frank became a major part of 80's Heavy Metal history.
Their anthems of steel are known worldwide and are often cited as one of the earliest innovators of Speed Metal with their track “Fast As A Shark” putting the pedal to the metal like no other before them.
After some line-up changes, non-activity and reunion shows the band breathed new life in 2009 with the addition of Mark Tornillo and since recorded two of the strongest Accept albums yet in “Blood Of The Nations” and “Stalingrad” which both cracked the Billboard Top 200 chart. Accept were back, but not for nostalgia rather firing on all cylinders and as vibrant and vital as ever. Now they have another killer new album on the way titled 'Blind Rage'. Australia will witness this 'Blind Rage' as Accept grace our shores for the very first time for 3 exclusive shows. No self-respecting fan of Classic Heavy Metal should miss this tour they perform highlights from 'Blind Rage' as well as all their classic anthems – ''Balls To The Wall'', ''Fast as a Shark'', ''Metal Heart'', ''Restless and Wild'', ''Teutonic Terror'' and more!
In the last twelve months Accept have again risen to the top of the Metal elite and played at some of the largest music festivals on the globe including Sweden Rock Festival, HellFest, Bloodstock Open Air, Masters Rock and Bang Your Head. Sprinkle in some headlining shows between festival appearances and you have a normal touring schedule for this hardworking, dedicated band. 2011 marked an astonishing 67 shows in over 7 countries, in three short months. With fists in the air and crowd chanting tracks, Accept have worked tirelessly around the world and now it is Australia's time.

URIAH HEEP RETURNS WITH POWERFUL NEW RELEASE: OUTSIDER: Uriah Heep, one of the pivotal hard rock groups to emerge from England in the late 1960s returns with Outsider, its 24th studio album, and the first since 2011's critically acclaimed Into the Wild album. Outsider will be released on June 6th in Europe, June 9th in the UK and June 10th in North America on Frontiers Records. “We are very proud of our history” says founder/guitarist Mick Box, “but it is equally important to keep producing new material. This new album, Outsider, is very much a rock album in true 'Heep' style. It shows that we still have the same passion and energy for our music that we have always had.”
From the opening chords of the album's hard driving rocker, “Speed of Sound”, to the more introspective closer, “Say Goodbye”, Outsider proves that Uriah Heep has remained a musical powerhouse, and one that can effectively balance its legendary sound with a distinctly contemporary approach. The record, which was produced by Mike Paxman (Asia, Status Quo), also introduces bassist Dave Rimmer, who joined the band last summer after the untimely death of long time member, Trevor Bolder.
Says Box of his late friend, Bolder: “We lost a world class bass player, singer, songwriter and friend. While Trevor was ill, he wanted us to continue working, so we used a bass player called Dave Rimmer, who Trevor approved of. It was only natural that Dave carried on with the band.”
After major tours of Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and South America, upon the release of Outsider, Uriah Heep will launch a world tour that will take in many continents as the band promotes the new album to an eager international audience.
Formed in London in 1969 by guitarist Mick Box and late singer David Byron as “Spice”, the group evolved into Uriah Heep (the name was taken from a character in Charles Dickens' novel David Copperfield) when they began conceptualizing the first record. The album Very 'eavy, Very 'umble, launched the band's distinct sound in 1970, one that was built around layered harmony vocals, swirling keyboards, and heavy guitar riffs. Current lead singer Bernie Shaw and keyboardist Phil Lanzon have been ever present since the mid-1980s, and drummer Russell Gilbrook joined Uriah Heep in 2007.
The band's repertoire features hits over five decades from the 70s through to the present day including tracks such as; “Gypsy”, “ Easy Livin'”, “July Morning”, “Look At Yourself”, “Stealin'” and “Lady in Black”, which went to #1 in Germany on three different occasions, and once stayed at #1 for 6 months. They have gone on to sell 40 million records, and have toured globally for 5 decades, visiting no less than 56 countries, headlining numerous festivals and arena tours, including being the first western rock band to play Russia, in 1987. Founder Mick Box has remained throughout.
Track listing for Outsider: Speed Of Sound, One Minute, The Law, The Outsider, Rock The Foundation, Is Anybody Gonna Help Me?, Looking At You, Can't Take That Away, Jessie, Kiss The Rainbow, Say Goodbye.

AVENUE OF ALLIES BACK WITH NEXT SONIC STATION:
On May 23rd Avenue Of Allies will release "Next Stop", the much anticipated second album by the Swedish AOR band Sonic Station. One month before the album the digital single “Amelia” will be available on April 18, accompanied by a music video for the track.
While perfect arrangements and production values of the highest order are still a trademark of the songs of guitarist, composer and producer Alexander Kronbrink and his band, the music is now focusing on the AOR side of Sonic Station. The powerful tunes have a more upbeat feeling and give more room to the guitars and with most of the musicians performing on all songs, the recordings carry the spirit of a real band performance rather than having the nature of a high profile studio project like the self-titled debut from 2012.
Alexander was brought up in a musical home in Stockholm, Sweden, where one of his friends in the neighborhood was Jonathan Fritzén, who played keyboards and the piano. Together they had jam sessions fooling around with jazz harmonies and even trying out some of their own compositions. Today Jonathan is a star in the Smooth Jazz genre with several number 1 hits on the US Billboard charts to his name. Jonathan appears on all Sonic Station albums, as does Alexander on Jonathan's solo records.
Like most teenagers Alexander was venturing into several musical genres, before a friend of his father's introduced him to the music of American guitarist Lee Ritenour, this listening experience paved the way for Alexander's own playing. Subsequently he discovered the music of some of the most influential artists of the US AOR and Westcoast genres like Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins and Toto, as well as songwriter and producer David Foster and listened to guitarists like Jay Graydon, Steve Lukather, Michael Landau and Dann Huff.
Eventually in his early twenties Alexander decided to dedicate himself completely to music. While studying music at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, he met his now long time musical partner in crime, singer and piano player Marika Willstedt. In her home country Sweden, Marika became a household name after appearing for several seasons on a popular national TV show during prime time. In addition to her work with Sonic Station as a singer and song writer, she is also a renowned session musician and artist in her own right.
Marika recommended the most significant new addition regarding the album's personal, lead vocalist Johan Boding. After she and Johan toured together with the legendary Swedish session guitarist Janne Schaffer in 2012, Marika immediately saw Johan as the perfect lead singer for Sonic Station and he gladly accepted the invitation. When he and Alexander started doing demos for the new album they were both very excited by the magical mix of Johan's marvelous voice and Alexander's music. As a result Johan is singing eight of eleven songs on the new album “Next Stop”, while Marika took over the lead vocals on the remaining three songs.
Next Stop was recorded between February and November 2013, with Alexander playing guitar and synthesizers and taking over the production duties and handling the mix. The drums on all tracks are played by Thorleif Robertsson and the keyboards by Jonathan Fritzén. Erik Metall laid down the bass on all songs, except on “Catch Me If You Can” and “Fool For Your Love”, where Mathias Garnĺs, who also co-wrote these songs together with Alexander, took over the bass parts.
Musical guest contributions come from Arvid Svenungsson with additional synthesizers on “Stopped Beating”, Andreas Ekstedt added another component that makes the album come alive by playing percussions and violinist Conny Lindgren wrote and performed, the violin arrangements for the three ballads “Fool For Your Love”, “Broken Man” and “Hide And Seek”. The co-writers Matilda Bĺdagĺrd, Mathias Garnĺs, Morgan Lydemo, Anders von Hofsten, Rebecca Petersson, Emma Essinger and Matilda Lindell added a variety of moods and feelings to the AOR tunes of "Next stop".
Following the album release Sonic Station will treat fans of prime AOR in the vein of Work Of Art, Lionville, The Theander Expression and Mecca with several live performances during the coming months.
Track Listing: 1) Amelia 2) Catch Me If You Can 3) Brighter After Dark 4) Fool For Your Love 5) Stopped Beating 6) Where Are You Now? 7) Half Of My Heart 8) Broken Man 9) Love Clash 10) Last Goodbye 11) Hide And Seek.
Sonic Station musicians on all songs except as noted: Johan Boding: Lead vocals on tracks 1,2,4,5,7,8,9,10 and background vocals; Marika Willstedt: Lead vocals on tracks 3,6,11 and background vocals; Alexander Kronbrink: Guitar, synthesizers, drum programming on track 4 and background vocals; Jonathan Fritzén: Keyboards; Erik Metall: Bass (except tracks 2,4); Thorleif Robertsson: Drums (except track 4); Additional musicians: Mathias Garnĺs: Bass on tracks 2,4 and background vocals; Arvid Svenungsson: Additional synthesizers on track 5; Andreas Ekstedt: Percussion on tracks 4,5,6,7,8,10,11; Conny Lindgren: Strings on tracks 4,8,11; Matilda Bĺdagĺrd: Background vocals; Matilda Lindell: Background vocals; Rebecca Petersson: Background vocals; Uffe Söderberg: Background vocals.

RICK SPRINGFIELD - BACK TO ROCK OZ IN OCTOBER:
Australia's Rick Springfield, the Grammy award-winning musician, actor and New York Times best-selling author is returning to rock Oz in October, with a national tour opening in Perth on 7 October.
It has been a while since Australian audiences have seen Rick Springfield in concert with his own band, although he was the headliner for the Countdown Spectacular tour of 2007 and a very privileged few witnessed him live in a wine bar in a Melbourne suburb one Sunday afternoon in July 2012 while he was on holiday visiting family. Link: youtu.be/4iJGy0-VzNs
Rick stunned Australian audience's during The Countdown Spectacular tour when he delivered a full on rock show with hit after hit. And there is a lot of reminding to remember!
With 25 million records sold, multiple top-40 hits, including Don't Talk to Strangers, An Affair of the Heart, I've Done Everything for You, Love Somebody and Speak To The Sky, as well as a 1981 Grammy® for Best Male Rock Vocal for his No. 1 hit single “Jessie's Girl,” He also introduced and had his own hit with the Mondo Rock classic 'State Of The Heart' in America. Rick Springfield's shows are legendary for their rock, high energy, full band sets and classic song lists. According to many, Springfield live is more aligned to Springsteen because of his rock'n'roll style performances. He even once recorded the song Bruce in recognition of this. Touring Australia with his band has been something Rick has been eager to do for a long time “I am and will always be an Aussie. My best memories of my early career are all centred around Australia. It will forever be my home. I cant believe I have never done a full tour in Oz as a solo performer. I am a F***ing Aussie boy.”
Rick Springfield started his celebrated career in Australia in the 60's as one of the original members of Mike Brady's MPD Ltd. In 1969 he joined the band Zoot, with Beeb Birtles (pre-Little River Band), Rick Brewer (pre-The Ferrets) and Darryl Cotton (who would go on to have his own solo career and become a children's TV host). Zoot was where Rick developed his rock and roll grounding, co-writing two of their singles 'Hey Pinky' and 'Freak'. The band is best remembered for their top 10 chart with a hard rock cover version of the Beatles 'Eleanor Rigby'. Rick reformed the band in November 2011 with Darryl's passing the following year more shows were not possible.
Following the breakup of Zoot in 1970, Rick was Russell Morris' bass player for a few months before he released his debut single 'Speak To The Sky' which made the top 10 in Australia and the US Top 20. In 1972 he released his first solo album, Beginnings before he relocated to the US later the same year. 40 years later, he is a special guest on Russell's new album 'Van Dieman's Land'.
Once in the US, Springfield continued to record and perform live before beginning a new career as a TV actor appearing in 'The Rockford Files' and 'Wonder Woman', before landing the lead, as Dr. Noah Drake, in 'General Hospital' a role that won him a legion of fans.
Rick's star was well and truly on the rise when he released his album, 'Working Class Dog', which became a smash hit in 1980 and spawned the number one hit 'Jessie's Girl'. In the following years he continued to record and perform live along with appearances in films and TV shows and on Broadway in the musical 'Smokey Joe's Cafe'. His role as Dr Noah in General Hospital was reprised following a 23-year absence. He was recently the centrepiece of the plot of David Duchovny's Californication third season playing a very lovable but degenerate character named …Rick Springfield. Rick has also appeared in an episode of Hawaii Five-0, and Drop Dead Diva. Jessie's Girl is featured in Laryngitis, the eighteenth episode of Season one of Glee and was also performed at the 2011 Glee Live! Concert and Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.
In 2010, Rick released his autobiography, Late, Late at Night. It entered The New York Times best-seller list at No. 13 and hit the Los Angeles Times and Publishers Weekly lists as well. Rolling Stone named it one of the top-25 rock autobiographies of all time. In 2012 Springfield's documentary An Affair of the Heart, which captured the close ties between Springfield and his fans, debuted at numerous film festivals and won special jury awards at the Nashville, Florida, Boston, and Daytona Film Festivals. In 2013 Springfield teamed up with Dave Grohl on Grohl's multi-faceted passion project, Sound City, which encompassed a documentary (Sound City), an album (Sound City: Real to Reel), and the Sound City Players tour, a string of critically acclaimed shows with fellow documentary subjects including Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor, John Fogerty, and Sir Paul McCartney among others. Each artist's set was backed by Grohl's hand-picked all-star band. Springfield and Grohl co-wrote The Man That Never Was, which has been widely recognized by critics as one of the best songs on the Sound City album.
In 2014 Rick Springfield's first novel, Magnificent Vibration will be released and in addition he will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He will hit the road with Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo for a multi-city tour of the States – and of course we will see him for his October tour of Australia. With all this and more, Springfield shows no signs of slowing down.

"ROCKERS AGAINST TRAFFICKING" BENEFIT RAISES OVER $10,000 TO BATTLE HUMAN TRAFFICKING:
Veteran photographer Kevin Estrada's Rockers Against Trafficking benefit to help raise awareness of human trafficking this past April 11th at Paladino's in Tarzana, CA (sponsored by Monster Energy) was an amazing success. All of the proceeds from the show will be used to rebuild the lives of these young victims with housing, medical assistance, legal aid, and job placement, and the donations will also be used to build and set up border monitoring stations between countries that are known for human trafficking. All proceeds will be divided between CAST LA (www.castla.org) and Tiny Hands International (www.tinyhandsinternational.org).
A completely packed venue witnessed a silent auction and raffle, with highlights including a Schecter guitar signed by all the musicians (for which a bidding war broke out!), a DW Collectors Series snare signed by all the musicians, a signed Motley Crue 'Greatest Hits' 2-LP Set and a signed drum cymbal by the Cult. There were also a few impromptu live auctions on stage offering a very rare guitar pick owned and used by Dimebag Darrell, and a pair of drumsticks – signed on stage by a sweaty DDave Lombardo just as he finished his set.
Performance highlights included a blistering set by Helmet, a gritty and fire fueled debut performance by Randy Piper's F-4, and a mind-blowing all star set by Chris Broderick (Megadeth), Dave Lombardo (Slayer/Philm), Robert DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots), and Keith St. John (Montrose). The heaviness was balanced out with touching acoustic moments by Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory and an uplifting acoustic set by Gonzo and Phil Sandoval of Armored Saint. To Humans, Spiders and Snakes and Edge Of Paradise and Ann Boleyn's Hellion set helped round out the night and kept the crowd energized.
While the music was outstanding, the audience continued to be educated throughout the evening about the dangers of the human trafficking epidemic. One portion of the evening that really hit home was an eye opening and heart breaking speech by a Burbank, CA mother whose daughter was kidnapped and forced into the world of human trafficking. The show was also dedicated to two missing girls, Ali and Savannah. The loudest audience cheer of the entire event was when Estrada announced from the stage, "Hopefully the next Rockers Against Trafficking concert will be to celebrate Ali and Savannah as they are rescued and reunited with their families." "Besides being a photographer, I am a dad – that is my top priority in life," adds Estrada. "I am so thankful to all the artists that donated their time and talents. The event was a huge success, I am very happy with the outcome. We have so many great supporters behind us and we gained many more that evening. Rockers Against Trafficking is here to stay."

For fans that simply cannot wait until that day, you can get a sneak peak of the song via this purchase link: itunes.apple.com/album/devil-from-the-moon-single/id853946945.
"Devil from the Moon" also serves as a prelude to the group's upcoming, yet-to-be-titled album, which was produced and engineered by Grammy nominated David Ivory. "Working on the new album with David was an unforgettable experience," the brothers recall. "He instinctively recognized what was necessary to manifest the essence of Strange Karma and mould it into something that appeals to a worldwide audience. During our collaboration, David connected with us both on a musical and personal level. His intrinsic ability as a producer to bring out the best in us as musicians has led to the creation of an authentic live performance experience and an honest representation of the Strange Karma sound."
Martin also discussed how the new song came to be: "Devil From The Moon emerged from a guitar riff my brother Paul (Strange) created. We kicked it around the studio for some time and out of the blue, the line 'devil from the moon' just came to me. From there, the lyric manifested seamlessly into a song - an entity that demands allegiance from its audience! For us, lyric and melody are of equal importance - neither takes precedence in our songwriting and each is imperative in the telling of the story. People who have seen us perform already know that Strange Karma has always strived to create music that also incorporates a theatrical element - we want our audiences not only to be moved by our music, but to 'live' the experience created with every note, every drum beat, every word. As the lead single from our new album, we believe 'Devil from the Moon' delivers the high-voltage energy and excitement the fans have come to expect from Strange Karma. It's been a long time coming, but we're confident the collaboration of haunting guitar riffs and menacing lyrics on 'Devil from the Moon' makes this track a compelling listen."
Strange Karma's first album, Volume 1, was issued in 2011 and racked up countless accolades from the music press, perhaps most flattering of all being WeLoveMetal.com, who said, "I'm going to start this is a big way. Who in the hell needs a Led Zeppelin reunion when we have a band with the sound of Strange Karma? These guys are the second coming of the music that started it all."ť Additionally, Matt O'Shaughnessy from WVOX Metal Mayhem said "Strange Karma is one of the most refreshing and highly innovative bands I have ever had the pleasure of spinning on air."
Judging from "Devil from the Moon," Strange Karma's upcoming sophomore disc will expand on the promise of their debut effort. Go ahead and start setting your "expectation meters" high!

ROBIN TROWER REDEFINES R&B POWER TRIO ON 1974 BRIDGE OF SIGHS:
North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 40th anniversary of Bridge of Sighs, the breakthrough solo effort from former Procol Harum guitarist Robin Trower.
Robin Trower got his musical career start with The Paramounts, an early sixties British rhythm'n'blues band, who were a favorite opening act for fledgling up & comers The Rolling Stones. Paramounts singer Gary Brooker would leave and form Procol Harum producing the international hit “A Whiter Shade of Pale”, and that initial success would lead to the addition of Trower's services in Procol Harum for the next several albums.
Robin Trower would leave the security of Procol Harum to embark on a solo career fashioned around an R&B trio that in April of 1974 would produce their second album, the monster effort Bridge of Sighs. A Top 10 album in the U.S., Bridge of Sighs opened with the galloping “Day of the Eagle”, transporting listeners into an almost alien world in the title track “Bridge of Sighs”, seducing them with the late Jimmy Dewar's voice on “In This Place” and “About to Begin” , while rocking out again on “Too Rolling Stoned”, “Fool and Me”, “Lady Love”, and “Little Bit of Sympathy”.
On Bridge of Sighs 40th anniversary, Robin reflects on his role in the evolution of blues rock guitar in popular music with InTheStudio host Redbeard. “I always saw myself as a Rock and Roll player influenced by Blues/Rhythm and Blues rather than trying to think of myself as a blues or rhythm and blues player, because it can only ever be an imitation for a white guy to do that stuff.”
Robin Trower 'Bridge of Sighs' / InTheStudio interview is available now to stream at: www.inthestudio.net/redbeards-blog/robin-trower-bridge-sighs-40th-anniversary

JACK RUSSELL'S QUESTIONABLE GIG BOOKING RESULTS IN ALMOST EMPTY GIG:
Worst gig ever. And I don't mean the performance - Jack Russell sounds like he is in pretty good vocal form here, but whoever booked him this gig needs to be fired. Now. Here is a clip of Jack Russell's Great White performing at the Sun Bank National Center in Trenton, NJ on 4/19/14 to an empty arena... The Trenton Freedom are an indoor football team in its first year and apparently haven't really been advertising and this show was scheduled after the football game. Check it out:
'THE BEST' FROM JOHN WAITE DUE IN MAY: John Waite has announced a new compilation, set for release in May. Titled "The Best", the CD/Digital will feature the following tracks: Back On My Feet Again (newly re-recorded), Isn't It Time (newly re-recorded), Rough & Tumble, Missing You (newly re-recorded), If You Ever Get Lonely, Better Off Gone, Suicide Life, Change (live), Every Time I Think Of You (live), Head First (live), Evil (live), Saturday Night (live), Bluebird Café (unplugged), I'm Ready (unplugged), In Dreams, The Hard Way, Downtown, Missing You (duet with Alison Krauss).
At John's site (www.johnwaiteworldwide.com/store) he details the thought process behind the release: "I suppose the idea for BEST came to me last December. I was in Beverly Hills just walking in the rain. There was an exhibition of the photography of Richard Avedon and I'd always been interested in his work so I thought I'd check it out, get out of the rain for a while and then get a glass of wine. I remember a huge white wall with at least 60 different photos–all figurative stuff, all different. It was a very '60s approach. I write, play and sing music but I'm also very interested in art. I don't really see the difference in the different mediums; literature, painting, acting, etc., it's all expression. I saw the pictures presented that way and considered what its counterpart would be musically and BEST came out of that. I didn't want to do the obvious thing and simply put out a "Greatest Hits” record as anyone can do that through iTunes. Just download a play list and hey, "presto.”
This collection is called BEST because it's my best. It's me putting together my favorite work and it's totally subjective; I had no one to answer to but myself. It was, I have to say, great fun. I re-sang "Missing You” and "Back On My Feet Again” as the lyrics and melodies had been written literally hours or at most a day before recording the originals so long ago. I always felt I could "do” them better and bring something to them that I'd missed, update the production and make them more vital. And besides, a retrospective was a nice way of looking at my work. I wanted to connect the dots as much for myself as for anyone who might hear it.
I set about the task at hand on my return from England on New Year's Eve. I'd been making lists over the holidays and decided to simply follow my heart. There was no way I could exclude "Bluebird Café” or "Suicide Life.” I also wanted to add live tracks from my great live band–Tim Hogan (bass), Kerri Kelli (guitar) and Rhondo (drummer)–and I remembered I had a steaming unreleased version of "Every Time I Think Of You” from last year that was so real it bordered on '60s soul music. My duet with Alison Krauss on "Missing You” was important to me on a profound level as it showed my love for country, bluegrass and in fact, Alison, whilst "Rough and Tumble” was pure blues rock."

INTERNATIONAL RELEASE FOR ELECTRIC GUITARS DUE MAY:
When Danish rock n' roll band Electric Guitars released their debut album last year, it caused quite a stir in their homeland - to such an extent that it even made the news on national television. Now the album is ready for international release May 26. The two guitar virtuosos behind Electric Guitars, Soren Andersen and Mika Vandborg, had succeeded in bringing ten of the best Danish guitarists of all time on one track, called 'Hero of Mine'. A homage to the electric guitar and some of the Danish legends who have played it. On the 10 minute long track you can listen to solos by Tim Christensen of Dizzy Mizz Lizzy for instance, Jacob Binzer of D-A-D, Billy Cross who played with Bob Dylan in the late 70s and not least Franz Beckerlee of the legendary 70s Danish rockband Gasolin' - as well as, naturally, Andersen and Vandborg themselves.
The track is an historic event, masterminded by two of the hottest Danish guitarists, who started performing together as Electric Guitars in 2012. Their shows were such a success that the next logical step was to work on an album. The result of which included 'Hero of Mine', took Denmark by storm, and it's now seeing a release in the rest of Europe and USA, followed by a tour in Germany.
Although the self-titled album by Electric Guitars is the band's debut, these two guys are far from rookies. Soren Andersen is perhaps best known as the guitarist in White Lion (Mike Tramp's former band) and for the five last years as the guitarist in Glenn Hughes band (former vocalist and bassist of Deep Purple). In fact, Electric Guitars were chosen as warm up band for the recent Deep Purple concert in Denmark.
Over the years, the two self-proclaimed guitar nerds, have been in countless bands, appeared on dozens upon dozens of successful albums in Denmark, with groups like Gnags and Love Shop. They have also released their own solo albums; one of such by Mika Vandborg included the former front-man from The Darkness, Justin Hawkins. Add to that Soren Andersen's appearances with Marco Mendoza, Dave Mustaine, Billy Sheehan and Tommy Aldridge, and one can quickly see that the these two incredible guitarists have worked with their fair share of talents artists.
However, now it is time for the duos own version of straight forward, back to the roots, no nonsense classic rock with strong melodies - recorded with drummer Morten Hellborn and bassist Peter Kjřbsted. This is 4 guys, playing 12 maximum energy rock 'n' roll songs, with the electric guitar in the center stage... Get ready to turn up your amplifier!

TSO'S TOMMY FARESE TO PRODUCE NEW PROG-ROCK ALBUM:
Founding Trans-Siberian Orchestra member Tommy Farese to produce new album by prog-rockers Wizards of Winter. Tour to include both Farese and Tony Gaynor. Wizards of Winter, known for their high energy and classically-infused-rock concerts, are excited to announce that they are in the midst of recording the follow-up to their critically-acclaimed Tales Beneath a Northern Star album. To help bring this new epic project to life, the band enlisted legendary vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Tommy Farese to produce the album. Tommy also has plans to lend his voice to a song or two to the recording.
Known throughout North America for his long and storied connection to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Farese helped found that act and served as lead vocalist and guitarist for their first 13 tours. In addition to fronting the act for over a decade, Farese also starred in TSO's TV movie “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve”, playing the role of the runaway's father.
After touring with The Wizards of Winter as a special guest this past winter, Farese says “I'm excited to work with this great group of musicians again. Producing is one of my favorite things to do. They asked me on board to produce and sing a song or two and it was an instant 'yes'.”
Though full tour details have not yet been announced, both Farese and founding TSO narrator Tony Gaynor – both of whom guested with the Wizards last year – will join the band once again for their 2014 Winter Tour. Says Gaynor: “2014 is proving to be a very rewarding year for me, after the last few years of nothing but pure survival. With so much on my plate already this year, I was honored to be asked by the Wizards to join their 2014 tour at the end of the year. I had such a wonderful time this past year touring with this group of talented musicians, who do it strictly for the love it. There is no better feeling for an artist, then being at the beginning of a project, and watching it grow. They have opened their hearts to me and always made me feel welcomed. I am looking forward to raising the bar even higher on my abilities and bringing some new and exciting energy and showmanship to the table. I'm getting older, but thank God I'm getting better!”
"The Wizards are extremely honored to have Tommy and Tony accept our offers to join us on tour again this year." stated Scott Kelly, leader of The Wizards of Winter. "As Tony states, when we first came together with these talented gentlemen last year, it just felt right. We worked together as if we had been old friends for many years. The overwhelmingly positive response we received from the fans was validation that we had a good thing going here. I am excited for the chance to get to do it again for a larger and broader audience. In our view, having Tommy assist us on the production of the album seemed to be a natural extension of this joint success. He has such a great ear and is such a stickler for detail that I know his input will help us deliver a better end product. All of us are very happy that he graciously accepted our offer to be our producer".

SKID ROW 'UNITED WORLD REBELLION – PART 2' EP OUT AUGUST 5:
April 14, 2014 -- Skid Row--Johnny Solinger (vocals), Scotti Hill (guitar), Rachel Bolan (bass), Snake Sabo (guitar) and Rob Hammersmith (drums)will be a long way from home throughout the summer. First, the band is teaming up with Black Star Riders for a brief tour of the west coast, which starts May 8 in Tucson, AZ at the Rialto Theatre. Once that concludes on May 16, the band will play headlining shows across the U.S., including a stop at the legendary Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, May 17 and an appearance at this year's Rocklahoma festival on May 23 in Pryor, OK. They'll then head to Europe in June for various festivals, including the Download Festival in Donington, England on June 14. Once the U.S. trek concludes in July, Skid Row will head to Kostrzyn, Poland, where they've been invited to headline one of the biggest festivals in Europe, the Woodstock Festival Poland on July 31.
All of this touring is getting their loyal fans ready for the highly anticipated new seven-song EP, United World Rebellion Part 2, set for release August 5 via Megaforce Records. After a hiatus that started in 1996, Skid Row returned to the big stageliterally--opening for KISS in 2000. Exhilarated to tour with the heroes who rallied them in the first place, the band was reinvigorated by being underdogs who needed to come out fighting to prove themselves. “When we put the band back together, we needed to reintroduce Skid Row as relevant without relying too much on past success,” explains bassist Rachel Bolan. “We wrote songs and hit the road. We sunk our heart and soul into it, letting people know we weren't doing it for lack of something better to do.”
2003's Thickskin and 2006's Revolutions Per Minute were battle plans for hundreds of live shows with new singer Johnny Solinger out front, every night being a hard fought battle to win new fans and convince the old ones. United World Rebellion Part 2 is Skid Row coming out swinging. Rachel and guitarist Snake Sabo tapped again into the potent songwriting collaboration that built the band. Sabo says they were eagerly up to the challenge. “We seem to be at our best when we're faced with adversity. It's us against the world again--and by us I mean the band and the fans who stick with us and carry the Skid Row torch without fail.”
New plans came together in an Atlanta recording studio. But it's a different time, a different industry, so they decided to record a series of EPs. “The idea really appealed to me,” says Bolan, “especially with the constantly changing musical climate. I like the idea of a steady flow of new music, as opposed to releasing a full-length album then riding it for the next two years.”
That guerrilla burst of recording a concise EP fostered a focused intensity that was liberating, says Snake. “The pressure seemed to be lifted. That immediately set me at ease and it became really exciting.”
Exciting and potent, prompting Solinger to exert the full range of his ability. “The third time in the studio as the voice of Skid Row was the proverbial charm, and the proof is in the tracks. United World Rebellion Part 2 is the most meaningful work I've done with the band. It's definitely the most I've been challenged, vocally.”
That sound is rambunctious exuberance. They got older, but Skid Row never really grew up. United World Rebellion Part 2 is still the youth gone wild, their musical spark still burning gasoline.

INTRODUCING DEBUT ALBUM FROM SATIN: Satin has finished the long awaited debut album simply titled 'Satin'. Comprised of 10 melodic feel-good rock songs written and produced by Satin himself. This album has a total listening time of approximately 44 minutes. Being an 80's child, both music and production will naturally reveal some elements from the 80's, blended tastefully with a full modern sound. The album was mastered in New York by Grammy Award Winning senior mastering-engineer Tom Coyne (Adele, U2, Def Leppard, Michael Jackson, George Michael, Pink, Beyoncé, Bee Gees).
The lyrical content on this album touches on subjects like choices, strength, life and love. Great vocal performances and melodic guitar work further enhances the already strong melodies. It starts off with the big and very catchy "Fire The Shot". The emotional impact caused by the beautiful ballade "Don't Know The Words" is immense. Satin tells all in the epic rocker "I've Been Crazy" and shares his point of view in "Life Will Never Slow Down".

Aussie rock legends The Angels are planning to celebrate their 40th Anniversary with a twin-Best Of release - 4CDs and 80 tracks of the band at their best - www.theangels40thanniversary.com.au:
After morphing from The Moonshine Jug & String Band in 1974 the group embarked on a new path under the name The Keystone Angels. In a decision that would change the face of Australian music forever they were signed to Alberts Music from a meeting with legendary producers Vanda & Young.
Stripping their name back to simply The Angels the band started a recording career that spawned dozens of studio releases with enormous radio and chart success. The Greatest 'Studio' Hits release brings forward 40 of the band's best album recordings. Each and every track has been carefully chosen to reward listeners with a valuable insight into the unarguable influence The Angels music has exercised over the course of this country's modern rock history.
Since 1974 The Angels have wowed audiences at pubs, clubs, festivals and concerts with their high energy brand of Australian rock riffs. The band's sound has become legendary across the country. Their unique approach to pumping up an audience is synonymous with rocking out while holding a drink in your hand after a hard day's work. The Greatest 'Live' Hits album contains a special selection of 40 recordings from gigs across their career and who knows... maybe you were there!
AUSTRALIAN GUITAR HERO JOE MATERA TO HIT THE EUROPEAN ROAD IN MAY:
Following on from his critically acclaimed 2012 album, 'Creature Of Habit', guitar hero Joe Matera released a new set, 'Terra Firma', via W.A.R Productions, in Europe in January, 2014. The Australian musician will be heavily promoting the album in May, 2014 during The 'Terra Firma' Europe 2014 Tour which will include shows in Austria, Germany, Poland, The Netherlands and Czech Republic. The tour kicks off in Linz, Austria on May 2nd where Joe will headline The Akustik Festival 2. The German band Seeking Raven will perform as support act on several dates.
Joe of course is very excited about his upcoming tour: "I am looking forward to promote 'Terra Firma' on stages in Europe. Can't wait to perform live for the first time ever to all my fans and new audiences in Poland, Czech Republic and the Netherlands. It's going to be rock 'n' roll!"
'Terra Firma' - Joe's second full-length studio album - features nine new songs built from a tumultuous year for Joe, in which he has enjoyed tremendous international success with his album 'Creature Of Habit', the accompanying single, 'Fallen Angel' and his first European Tour in September, 2012 as well as having to face a double family tragedy. The roots of 'Terra Firma' stretch from this highly emotional period and the resultant song-writing display greater depth, maturity and emotive resonance than his previous work. Joe – whose reputation is principally as a creator of guitar driven instrumentals – has also responded to calls from his fans to add more vocals in the wake of 'Fallen Angel' and two new songs on the collection, 'Shining Star' and 'Tell Me Why' feature his voice and new lyrical twists.

This week on The Double Stop guitarist Ronny Jones shares his story. Ronny was in the band Mac Meda with Robin Crosby (Ratt) and Rob Lamothe (Riverdogs) and two of their songs (I'm Insane and Scene of the Crime) appeared on Ratt's smash album "Out Of The Cellar"ť. Ronny and Rob were co-writers of the tracks, but never given credits on the album. Ronny explains the lawsuit that followed, as well his next band, Black Bambi, which had their debut album produced by Beau Hill, but never release due to politics at Atlantic Records. Very different than any of my past episodes, but it is a pretty important story of the dark side of the 80's music biz. thedoublestop.com/ep-11-ronny-jones-mac-meda-black-bambi-cocoa-blue

RON KEEL PERMIT TIME PERFORMANCE AT BUNDY RANCH: Ron Keel is Proud to Announce a Prime Time Headline Performance at the Bundy Ranch Patriot Party Friday April 18.
Most Americans – and many around the world – are familiar with the controversial situation surrounding the Cliven Bundy family in Nevada and their recent and ongoing confrontation with the U.S. government in regard to 'grazing rights' and the paramilitary invasion of Mr. Bundy's land which extends to the desecration of that land, the confiscation of his cattle, and the violations of his family's constitutional rights. "As an American, as a patriot, as a citizen of the state of Nevada, and as a business owner I strongly support Cliven Bundy, his family, and what they're fighting for," proclaims Ron Keel. "It's the ranchers, the farmers, the truckers, the construction workers, those men and women on the assembly line – it's the working class that keeps this country strong, and we have to either stand together or fall forever. I'm honored to be asked to sing at the Bundy ranch for this event and I intend to sing my songs, speak my mind, and eat some Bundy beef – thanks to Mr. Cliven Bundy and his family for inviting me to participate in this historic occasion."ť ~Ron Keel.

TESLA ARE BACK WITH A NEW ALBUM SIMPLICITY OUT IN EUROPE IN JUNE ON FRONTIERS: Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of Tesla brand new studio album entitled Simplicity on June 6 in Europe.
The Sacramento Rockers are back with 14 new songs offering a ride of energy that doesn't come easy for a band of rookies much less a band whose been doing this for over 20 years. “Simplicity” is Tesla's seventh all original studio album which follows a 6-years creative break from the release of the previous album “Forever More”.
After a string of shows in the USA in 2013, the band went back into the studio in early 2014 and came out with a new album, which goes straight back to the Tesla roots. The band worked and produced it as they did with “Into the Now”, their successful come-back album from 2004. Helped by the legendary Tom Zutaut who was the man behind the best Tesla albums, this new album rocks from start to finish, showing a variety of emotions where each song has its own twist--not sounding like another.
The first new song off the new album "Taste My Pain", was released last summer digitally via iTunes and Amazon. The track was recorded during a two-day (June 5-6, 2013) session at J Street Recorders in Sacramento. The new song is, according to the band, "A heavier song with a hard-driving beat and Tesla trademark blazing guitars."
It is possible to stream it now following this link: youtu.be/cqHzkUIvL-8.
Guitarist Frank Hannon says about “Simplicity”: “I must say that this new Tesla album is really gonna be awesome. We went in more prepared with the songs and ideas way more than Forever More, and the style is pure Tesla back to our roots. I truly believe you guys are gonna love it!”
“The opening track is called MP3”, continues Hannon “and starts off with an opus intro that orchestrates into a heavy slow groove with lyrics about technology and how we miss simplicity, vinyl albums, family values...and has a heavy ass riff! Then we segue into a rock n roll song called Ricochet that talks about uncle Ted...can't wait to play this stuff live!”
Simplicity in the Frontiers version released across Europe, will include the following songs: MP3; Ricochet; Rise and Fall; So Divine...; Cross My Heart; Honestly; Flip Side!; Other than Me; Break of Dawn; Burnout to Fade; Life is a River; Sympathy; Time Bomb; 'Til that Day; Burnout to Fade (writing demo version)* / *Bonus track.
Tesla: Jeff Keith: Lead Vocals; Frank Hannon: Guitars, Vocals, Piano, Bass; Brian Wheat: Bass, Vocals, Piano; Troy Luccketta: Drums and Percussion; Dave Rude: Guitars, Vocals, Bass.
Produced by: Tom Zutaut and Tesla Mixed by: Michael Wagener.

The AOR scene in the late eighties was a thriving hive of activity. At the turn of the new decade, the likes of Mitch Malloy, Paul Laine, Firehouse, Tyketto and Talisman were all signed up and ready to make an impact on the genre. Everybody wanted an AOR band, and Polydor records were no exception. Having been fairly successful in the U.K with the likes of Magnum and Little Angels, the label had set their sights on Seven, a relatively unknown act from Bournemouth.
The roots of the band originally began in South Africa in an outfit called Face To Face. Both Keith McFarlane and Simon LeFevre (and his brother John) had enjoyed considerable success over an eighteen month period, releasing several singles and one album, before dissent in the ranks saw the young band split up. Meanwhile, a young Mick Devine was plying his trade as a drummer in the band UC27. With both McFarlane and the LeFevre brothers returning to the UK, it was decided after several months to put the band back together, but base it in the UK, as Mick Devine explains, “I took a brave leap leaving South Africa, as I hadn't met Simon, John or Keith previously. We were originally based in Woking, but after meeting Mike Parker (our initial Manager – now deceased) at a talent show, we moved to Bournemouth. I was initially approached by John to drum with the band, but they thought I was a much better singer than drummer and realised I needed to come out from behind the drums and become the lead singer.”
A quick name change ensued and Seven was born. When John Wolff (The Who, John Parr) joined Parker to co-manage the band, they soon secured a support slot on the first nationwide tour of Brother Beyond. It was from here, via Phil Schofield and a record exec's wife, that things took a turn for the better as Devine recalls, “Having picked up valuable live experience (and a sizeable fan base) on the Brother Beyond tour, we attracted Phillip Schofield's attention who started to play our demo's on radio one. Whilst on tour, the head of Polydor's wife and kids came to one of the shows and the story goes that she went home and told her husband that he needed to sign us,” laughs Devine. “That combined with the touring, fans and Phil's plugging, a deal was offered and as a bit of media hype, Philip Schofield was on hand to witness the record deal signing.”
Heading out on the road, they supported an eclectic variety of acts that included the likes of Jason Donovan, Richard Marx, The Monkees and a second stint with Brother Beyond. It's a time period that Devine is keen to reminisce about, “Even though they were out and out pop gigs, we loved the crowds and the noise. We went from pubs to opening to 3000 screaming fans in Southampton. It is a very addictive adrenaline rush. We got to play all the top venues, which were fantastic; including Wembley Arena, the NEC, BIC, SEC and even the Royal Albert Hall. The Richard Marx tour was definitely the best for us with a more grown up audience we were able to rock it up and truly be ourselves. It went down really well!”
Entering the recording studios, with John Parr at the production helm, they recorded two very strong singles in the shape of “Inside Love” and “Man with A Vision. One of the myths about Seven is that they recorded a full album, but that it was shelved by Polydor after the band were dropped. It's a myth that Devine is quick to dismiss, “We never had an album deal. We were signed for two single releases and we were then dropped. We had more than an albums worth of material, mostly consisting of really good quality demos, having recorded at some great studios including a number of weeks at Rockfield.”
Fast forward to the present day and bass player, Pat Davey, was working alongside Robert Hart on an Escape Music album when the name Seven cropped up in the conversation. It would seem that Khalil Turk was a big fan, as Devine explains, “Yeah, back in the day Khalil had really loved the band and he got in touch to see if we would be interested in finally releasing an album with the original line-up,” gushes the excited singer. “As we are currently living in different countries (Keith & Simon are in South Africa, Myself, Pat & Oz in the UK), Khalil put us together with Lars Chris (fantastic Swedish Hard rock guitarist and producer) who is producing the tracks from Sweden and then sending tracks to SA & the UK for each of us to add our individual parts. The sound is definitely fresher and harder and more up to date, giving the band, the edge it needed back in the 80's.”
This brings us up to the present day and we are all now waiting with excitement for the Seven album to finally be released. One thing for sure, it has been worth the wait.
HAPPY EASTER: Have a safe and Happy Easter break folks. See you back here Tuesday. I'm recovering from triple hernia repair surgery from earlier in the week, so hopefully the long weekend will be enough to get me back in shape. Lots to come next week and in the weeks ahead!
