GLYDER - IRISH MELODIC HARD ROCKERS’ IRRESISTABLE ‘PLAYGROUND FOR LIFE’ ALBUM RELEASED JAN. 28TH
Raised on a healthy diet of Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, Deep Purple Iron Maiden and Pink Floyd, Glyder play classic style rock with a modern twist. The band hail from the Wicklow mountains in Ireland. The band launched onto the scene in 2004 after a one off gig at “The Vibe for Philo” in Dublin. Not long after, Glyder toured Ireland opening for Thin Lizzy and made a great impression with their debut EP ”Black Tide Silver Path” which convinced legendary producer Chris Tsangarides ( Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Ozzy) to record the debut album.
The organic, visceral, gloriously retro, debut self titled album, released in May 2006, firmly established them at the forefront of the emergent Irish international rock elite alongside the Answer et al.
Glyder’s debut album was awarded KKKK in Kerrang!’s review in their May 27th 2006, issue.
“It might not be particularly surprising for an Irish band to look to Phil Lynott’s peerless legacy for inspiration, but Glyder manage to deftly emulate their heroes without ever descending into artless theft. Smothered in sublime guitar harmonies and delivered with grit and precision… with an added tough and virile metallic edge that often verges on (early) Maiden. At its heart this is an album for people who never tire of hopelessly romantic rock’n’roll songs laden with duelling guitars and wistful street poetry.” (Dom Lawson).
BBC6’s Bruce Dickinson, Xfm’s Ian Camfield and a host of UK rock show DJ’s all championed Glyder, who subsequently won a text vote competition to open for Thunder on three dates of their November 2006 UK tour - something of an achievement for a foreign band considering that only UK mobiles were valid! Glyder went down so well they were invited to support Thunder on their entire European tour in March 2007, which in turn led to their first major festival appearance, at the Gods of Metal Festival in Italy in June 2007, alongside Motley Crue, Velvet Revolver and the Scorpions. Released in Japan in March 2007, the debut album reached #8 in Burrrn Magazine’s hard rock and metal charts and continues to sell well over there. In late 2007 Glyder recorded an exclusive version of Simon and Garfunkels “Hazy Shade of Winter” for Classic Rock Magazine.
Glyder recorded the follow up “Playground for life” in the summer of 2007 and it was mixed by Chris Tsangarides in Autumn 2007.
On “Playground for life”, Glyder blend classic tones of the 70’s and 80’s incorporating many styles from full on heavy rock to mellow lush guitar tones, rock balladry and quirky grooves. With an open mind to songwriting and the broad range of musical tastes within the band Glyder have diversity and a sound that is unmistakably Glyder.
Glyder were picked by Classic Rock Magazine as ones to watch in 2008.
“Playground for life” was awarded album of the month in Rock Hard Magazine France in December 2007.
“With a solid twin guitar attack ripping out the harmonies with aplomb and more swagger than Clint Eastwood, they are the Thin Lizzy to The Answer's Zeppelin and even Phil Lynott's mum likes them! And it's easy to see why as tracks like” Walking My Own Ground” and “For Your Skin” have the same stadium gallop and romantic nuances that Lizzy exuded with glorious result”. – Classic Rock Magazine
“The quality of the songwriting really does separate Glyder from the vast majority of up and coming acts that would be viewed as their peers, which augers extremely well for their future” – HARDROCKHOUSE.COM
”Glyder are one of the best kept secrets of the European rock scene. Seek their CDs out... you really won't regret it” – Jason Ritchie Blogs Critics
“Songs like "Gamblers Blues," "Sweets," "Puppet Queen," and "Walkin' My Own Ground" are filled with THIN LIZZY-esque melody lines, upbeat riffs, and absolutely killer lead guitar playing”. –The Metal Observer Canada.
“Take a huge slab of hard rock with heaps of melody, a notable bluesy element and even subtle shades of punk and 90’s rock and you get Glyder” – Metalteamuk.net
