Artist Bio
Cornerstones 4thh studio album “Two Tales of One Tomorrow” is due for release in Feb 07, once again on Massacre Records.
The band came about when Steen Mogensen, Bass Player and Producer for Cornerstone, decided to record a solo album when he was bass player in Royal Hunt and they were auditioning for a replacement for departed vocalist DC Cooper.
Scottish singer Doogie White, former Rainbow and current Yngwie Malmsteen frontman, had tried out for the position in RH unsuccessfully and Steen asked Doogie to sing on his solo album “Arrival”. The album came out in 2000 and was successful enough for the record company to offer Steen a further 2 album deal.
In 2001 Steen and Doogie started writing together for the second Cornerstone CD “Human Stain”, released in 2002. The album was a marked departure from the debut with Mogensen and White taking a heavier and darker route whilst keeping the melodic overtures of it predecessor. The album was very well received. One commentator viewed the album as the “best Rainbow album Rainbow never made”. However White was quick to point out that in his opinion “Rainbow was always defined by Ritchies guitar sound and playing”.
In 2004 the ambitious “Once Upon Our Yesterdays” was released. This album would see the band taking their sound and songwriting again to another level.
White commented at the time “We work within the style we have developed but hopefully we are pushing our boundaries as writers and players. Having a solid lineup for the band helps. I don’t want to repeat what we have done in the past and rehash old ideas”
This line up would embark on a European tour in early 2005 playing songs from all 3 of the albums.
To celebrate the tour Cornerstone released “In Concert” containing the full live set capture at several venues.
“It is my favourite album I think” said Doogie at the time “Just because it was spontaneous. I find it hard to listen to albums I have recorded as you spend so much time writing and recording them that you get kinda burnt with them but this live one, I can listen to. I much prefer the live arena to the restriction of the recording studio”
So what of 2007’s “Two Tales of One Tomorrow”?
“ We recorded 15 songs I believe and chose the ones that we thought complimented each other and the idea of the albums title and they also show just how far Steen has grown as a producer. It was important for us to utilise the natural progression of the band and allow the songs to breathe. Rune Brink (keyboards) contributed magnificently to this album and also wrote one of the songs. With Kasper and Allan both now on their 3 studio album and firmly entrenched in Cornerstone I don’t see any problems in taking the band live and laying waste to the rock clubs and halls of Europe once again”
“The albums title? It is about choice. Choosing the path that will lead to satisfaction or not. Like tracking in a parallel universe. What we do today affects the outcome of tomorrow. We spend a lot of time watching the shadows dancing on the wall. Now if we turn round to see what is making the shadows…….”
Lyrically we are covering a range of subjects from the charlatans who fleece money from the bereaved by claiming to be in touch with their loved ones on Misery Loves Company to séances in We are the Dead. A complete contradiction in subject matter.
